Thisisa4mileloophike.ItgoesfromtheElkmontcampgroundontheLittleRiverTrailtoCucumberGapTrailtoJakesCreekTrail leadingbacktoElkmontcampground. ThereisnotmuchelevationgainandmuchoftheLittleRiverTrail isanoldroadbeforeitgoestoasinglefiletrail. About .3milesupLittleRiverTrail isabenchandaswimming hole. The trail follows the river formost of theway to CucumberGap. In the area near CucumberGap/JakesCreekTrailintersectionyouwalkthroughtheoldvacationhomesinElkmont.In1934whentheGreatSmokyMountainsNationalParkwasbeingestablishedthesehomeownersnegotiatedextendedleasestostayinthepark.Thiswasendedin1992alongwiththeleaseoftheWonderlandHotel.Thisvalleybegan tobe settledand logged in the1800s. In1901LittleRiverLumberCompanybought the land,builtarailroad,abasecampandsawmillatElkmont.Inthelatetwentiesthelumbercompanyagreedtoselllargetrackstotheparkserviceeventhoughtheycontinuestolaytrackandcutvirgintimberthrough1938.Youcanstillseecableinspotsleftfromthelogging.Ifyouhaven’tseenthispartoftheparkitisatreat.LittleRiverisnotsolittleandcanyouimaginefamiliescomingtotheElkmontcabinsinthesummertobeattheheat(yes,beforeairconditioningexisted). Ifyouhaveheardofthesynchronousfirefliesthishikeisinthatgeneralareaofthepark.As always in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park dress for the weather but always bring rainjacket/windbreaker. Bottlesofwaterandsometrailsnackswillbeprovidedbutyouneedawaytocarrythem.JoinusforagreatloophiketocelebrateourNationalParks’100thanniversary.

A graduate of the University of Tennessee‐Knoxville, Dane Bradshaw earned his B.S. inCommunicationsinjustthreeyearsandanM.S.inSportManagementduringhisfourthyear.WhileatUT,Bradshawletteredinbasketballallfouryearsandwasvotedteamcaptainbyhisteammatesinhisjuniorand senior seasons. In fact, Bradshaw has never been on a basketball teamwhere hewasn’t namedcaptain.SportsIllustratednamedBradshawcaptainofthe“All‐Glue”teamwhichrecognizesplayerswhodoallthesmall,unselfishthingsthatholdateamtogether.Bradshawfinishedhisaccomplishedathleticcareeramongstthetop10alltimeleadersinassists,steals,andgamesplayedfortheVols.
