Destination: Southwestern Wyoming aka God’s country (if you believe in that sort of stuff)

Trip SummaryWyoming- America’s Energy Colony at a Crossroads explores the social, economic, and environmental changes that Wyoming has experienced as the energy needs of the United States have transformed over the past century.  Students should expect various speakers, readings, and interactive experiences involving visits to museums, coal and trona mines, industrial wind mills, dams, oil wells, geological formations, and prehistoric sites, as well as hiking, snowshoeing and hopefully snowmobiling and skiing through the Red Desert and Wind River Range.  Through interactive experiences, students will learn about renewable energy sources as well as fossil fuels, and how the demand for both is dictated by environmental initiatives and government policy.  The ultimate goal of this course is for students to walk away with a better understanding of the geologic wealth of Wyoming and the impact these resources have on the entire American energy industry.  All students will journal and blog throughout the trip as well as complete a power point to share the experience and with students on campus at the March 1st assembly.

For students to better understand not only the changes that have occurred in both Wyoming and the West, but also this specific area’s (Sweetwater and Sublette counties) importance in the economic and cultural makeup of Wyoming, the United States, and the world. When students leave Wyoming, they will have a better grasp of why Wyoming is considered an “energy colony” and how the need for it’s natural resources has impacted the state. The students will be expected to update a blog daily, to keep a journal daily, and to put together a power point to present to the student body.
