Term 2 Week 9 Tuesday 23rd June 2020. Gold Bar 3 Recipient – Aliyah Congratulations to Aliyah on reaching your Gold bar 3. Aliyah is one of a kind, and is always there for ME. She is AMAZE-BALLS and if you ever find someone like her don't let them go! She is loyal, honest and I can trust her heaps, she is the one that will laugh at my jokes and make me be a better person. I love hanging out with her and can't wait to begin HS with her. I'm so happy to finally be in the same class as you after 4 years of waiting. By Evie Aliyah is a very caring person that has some humour to her. She makes you happy when you're sad and always has a smile on your face. I love spending time with her because shes such a beautiful person to hang out with. She has a cute little bright smile that lightens up the room whenever it's dark. You're an awesome person to have by my side Aliyah. You're tough, loyal, kind, honest and listen to my suggestions. Your personality is one you won't find very often. You're a great role model and an awesome friend. You've got a kind heart Aliyah. By Annie I first met Aliyah when I moved schools from Queensland. She and Evie were really nice. She was not in my class but at recess and lunch she was always there for me and everyone else that we hung out with. She really deserves her gold bar three because she has supported everyone over these years. By Tilly Aliyah is a one of a kind person, the kind that you only meet once in a lifetime but I was lucky enough to have meet her in year 2. After that she became one of my best friends. Aliyah is kind, caring, nice, determined, funny, very sporty and hard working. There has never been a day when Aliyah was around and she didn't make me smile. Aliyah is one of the best people I know and she 100% deserves her gold bar three. Congratulations . By Rory Rainbow award recipient – Grace This week a very special award was handed out to our school captain Grace. She received her Rainbow award, which is the level that comes after Gold Bar 3. This is a huge achievement and one which has only happened a handful of times at Milton Public School. What a year this girl has had and to still rise above amidst the turmoil of losing her home in the fires as well as the disruptions COVID has caused is a real credit to her personality and strength of character. She truly deserves this accomplishment and on behalf of everyone at the school we would like to congratulate her whole heartedly. Well done Grace. You are a true MPS legend! Semester 1 student reports Student reports go home this Friday, 26

th of June. A

reminder that these reports will not be a typical A-E report in line with the guidelines provided by the department of education. Due to such a large lay off from school because of COVID 19 reports will provide an overview of your student’s academic progress in English, maths and other KLAs combined. Comments will specify whether your child is working below, at or above grade expectations in English and maths only. There will also be a tick box indicating your child’s commitment to learning through-out Semester 1. Please note: students who have enrolled at Milton Public School from 25th May will not receive a written report. Parents of these students are encouraged to phone the class teacher for a statement of how they have settled into their new class.

Year 6 Bridge building As part of Year 6s integrated unit of work on Bridge to Terabithia, we study different types of bridges and their various engineering traits. Year 6 then have a day where they group up, design and build a bridge using materials

from home and some supplied from school. We make a massive racket with the banging of nails and sawing of wood. The end result is some very sturdy, well constructed bridges.

Craft Request. At the end of each year, the students in Year 3 make a reindeer from corks. In an attempt to reduce - reuse - recycle, we ask for parents and our school community to save any corks they may have for this wonderful craft activity. Any corks are suitable, though champagne or sparkling wine corks are the best. We need to collect at least 4 corks per student and there is over 100 students in the grade. If you are able to help out we would appreciate it. Please send any corks in to the school office and they will redirect them to the Year 3 teachers. Start collecting!

Canberra and Berry excursions At this stage the Year 6 Canberra and Year 5 Berry excursions are still planned to go ahead. Canberra takes place on the 23

rd of September. The 2

nd

instalment of $60 due on Friday the 26th of June.

Berry takes place on the 26th of August. 2nd instalment of

$50 was due Friday the 5th of June with the 3rd instalment

of $50 due Friday the 3rd

of July. Please try to stay on top of these instalments to avoid large sums owing towards the end. Many families still have not paid a deposit. It is very important that we know numbers before the end of this term. If either camp is cancelled due to COVID 19, families will receive a full refund.

Video assembly This Monday’s Video assembly featured a Gold Bar 3 presentation for Aliyah. Congrats Aliyah! Mr Thomson thanked our wonderful canteen lady Bec and her fantastic team of volunteers. He also talked about procedures for staff and students around injuries in the playground and the use of a red emergency card for staff.

Gold awardees Morning tea Next Monday the 29

th of June, all gold awardees for this

year will be rewarded with a morning tea in the school hall. Invites went out this week.

Premier’s Reading Challenge The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. All K-6 students are invited to participate. Books read by students can be back dated to August 2019. Due to Covid 19 there are some rule changes. Key changes include: - All students will be able to include 10 choice books on their 2020 student reading records. - All students will be able to include books read as part of collaborative reading with teachers or parents/ carers, either in person or online. - Students who do not complete the Challenge in 2020 will not be disadvantaged from achieving cumulative PRC awards in the future. For more information and student logon follow the link below. https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Canteen news! All regular canteen services have returned, including before school, recess and lunch counter service. Free toast and fruit in the mornings was again a bit hit. The new online ordering system with My School Connect is a total success! In this current strange climate and to maintain healthy hygiene we are strongly encouraging online orders however orders over the counter are still being accepted. To order online simply go to myschoolconnect.com.au to register, or download the My School Connect app to register. Once you have placed a lunch order, please ensure you receive the confirmation email from My School Connect telling you your order has been processed and accepted.

Did you know you can order lunchtime frozen treats online too!?

Mirida Colouring-in Competition Mirida is running a colouring-in competition. This is a National Reconciliation Week initiative from Copyright Agency Reading Australia. Chae Moloney, our Aboriginal Education Officer, will be visiting many classes over the next two weeks to share the story ‘There Once was a Boy’ by Dub Leffler. This is a beautiful picture book about friendship, forgiveness and reconciliation. Students will be given the colouring-in sheet by their teacher, to be completed at school or at home. All entries need to be handed in to either Chae or Mrs Rafidi by the 1

st of July

2020.

Student work of the week: Correction, last week’s poem The Lying Scientist was actually by Tom in year 5, not Jack. Sorry Tom Turtles- By Zade Turtles come from the cold blooded family, they stay at the bottom of the sea so they stay warm which helps their babies survive. Turtles keep eating plastic, and this makes them get closer to becoming extinct. It is important that we stop littering so we can save the turtles! When you are at the beach take 3 for the sea by picking up 3 or more pieces of rubbish and taking it home to put in the bin. Turtles lay their eggs in the sand and bury them so they don’t get eaten by other animals who prey on them. When they hatch they dig out of the sand and they have to get to the water quickly so they don't get eaten by predators. Sea turtles love to eat jellyfish. They live up to 100 years. They can hold their breath for up to 5 hours and have an amazing sense of direction. There are 7 types of sea turtles. These include the Leatherback, Green sea , Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Kemp's Ridley and the Flatback sea turtles.

The Fathering Project: Supporting school learning at home When dads support school learning at home, this shows our kids that we truly value education and the school. Your job as a parent is to encourage them, support them and challenge them to learn and do their best. If you can instill in them the mindset that learning is a process, that is positive and enjoyable, they will grow up to be lifelong learners who thrive on challenges. Evidence – Did you know? 1. Fathering involvement in

educational activities with their children is associated with improved educational outcomes for all students.

2. Children at all ages with fathers interested and involved in their learning have a clear academic advantage.

3. Children do not stop needing their fathers because they get older, or because lives get busy.

4. You don’t have to be strong academically yourself to have an impact on your child’s education. Evidence shows you just have to be supportive and positive about learning.

Top tips 1. Read with your child from an

early age and encourage a positive attitude to learning from reading – both books and online.

2. Promote a positive mindset in your children to help them see the benefits and enjoyment that can be found in learning and improvement.

3. Don’t put too much pressure on them. Encourage them to be as good as they can be and help them plan how to improve.

4. Be willing to help with homework, even if that just means asking them questions.

5. Let them be independent learners and be there to support, if they want to do the home learning themselves.

6. Encourage them to see mistakes as an important part of the learning process, and help them to see how to use their mistakes to learn.

7. If homework is causing stress or arguments, put it aside and take a break. Try again later and if there are still problems, contact the teacher to discuss solutions.
