Our return to God for Blessings onSunday, September 2, 2018

Stewardship Thought: “Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?” (James 2:5)

What is more important – being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith, we keep God first in all things and realize that material things really don’t matter and that it’s more important to share with those who have less.

SAINT OF THE WEEK SAINT PETER CLAVER

He was born in 1580 near Barcelona, Spain in the town of Verdu, and after studying at the University of Barcelona, Peter Claver joined the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. More studies followed at Montesione College in Palma, Mallorca. In 1610 he became a missionary to New Granada and was ordained a priest at Cartagena, now part of Colombia. In those days Cartagena was a hub for the slave trade, and our saint did what he could to improve the awful conditions under which slaves had to live and work. Peter Claver devoted himself to feeding the slaves, giving them medicine, teaching them about God, and baptizing them. He tried to convince owners to treat their slaves humanely, and when he visited plantations Peter Claver usually stayed with the slaves in their atrocious living quarters. He worked to abolish the slave trade and also ministered to lepers and prisoners. Many said that he had the gift of prophecy, that he performed miracles, and that he could read the minds of others. In 1650 Peter Claver became ill with the plague, from which he never quite recovered. He died on September 8, 1654, was canonized in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII, and is considered the patron saint of slaves, Colombia, race relations, and African Americans. We celebrate the feast of St. Peter Claver on September 9.

MISS BEHAVIOR ANSWERS A REAL QUESTION

Dear Miss Behavior: Is RCIA only for non-Catholics? I’m Catholic, but I would really like to come and learn with the inquirers! Can adults who are Catholic come to RCIA if they just need Confirmation? Is RCIA the only way to become Catholic? Sincerely,

Just Wondering. Dear JW: I am always giddy with delight when I receive a real letter! Not that I make up some of those other letters or anything. These are excellent questions. The answer may vary from parish to parish, but I do know that in our parish Catholics may join RCIA for a variety of reasons. Perhaps, like you, they want to learn more about their faith. Some may want to attend classes in order to support a friend or a relative who is considering joining the Church. And, as you point out, some adults were not confirmed as teenagers and now want to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. The RCIA program is an ideal way for these people to prepare for the sacrament. They will learn about the Church, learn about Confirmation, and make new friends in the process. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) has become the usual way by which converts join the Church, but it is not the only way. In my day, before the RCIA program was in existence, converts such as myself met with a priest for discussion and at some point the priest and the inquirer would decide that it was time for the inquirer to become Catholic. That option is still available today. If I were a potential convert today, I would opt for the RCIA program. Some people, however, have schedules that conflict with RCIA meetings. Others may be shy about sharing their experiences and beliefs in a group. Whatever the situation—Catholic, non-Catholic, serious inquirer or tentative questioner—all are welcome to join the RCIA program or to meet with the pastor or another staff member. Just pick up the phone! Sincerely,

Miss Behavior
