Mense is reg as hulle dink voertuie was die grootste slag- offers. A Parow man was nabbed for corruption bymembers of the South African Revenue Ser-vice (SARS) custom border control.

The members were performing routine se-arches on in-coming trucks and buses, at theHuguenot Tunnel on the N1 when they foundbags containing imported clothing.

The incident happened on Wednesday 21March at 07:30, says Warrant Officer No-vember Filander, provincial police spokes-person.

Buses were searched and four bags con-taining imported clothing to the value ofR350 000 was confiscated after the owner

couldnt produce invoices or proof of pur-chase for the goods.

He says on the same day a member of theSARS custom border control unit received atext message from the offender requestingthem to release the goods in exchange for abribe of R15 000.

On Tuesday 3 April an intelligence opera-tion was executed by Cape Town Central po-lice in conjunction with SARS anti-corrupti-on unit. After the transaction transpired, themembers arrested the suspect.

He appeared in the Cape Town Magistra-tes Court on a charge of corruption.

The People Living With Cancer (PLWC)Cancer Buddies organisation has beenearmarked as one of the beneficiaries inthe spectacular Want ons Kan/Cause weCan! concert.

PLWC Cancer Buddies was establishedin 2000 by Linda Greeff and Carl Lieben-berg, both of whom are cancer survivors.

The organisation develops volunteercounselling guidelines and support thathelps people who have been diagnosedwith cancer.

After a person has been diagnosedwith cancer, that is when he or she needsall the support they can get, says Greeff.

The aim is to provide support to newlydiagnosed cancer patients when treat-ment starts, to assist with the initial ad-justment to the process.

This service ensures that a cancer pa-tient and their caregivers have access tosupport services near their treatmentunits. We need them to be cancer survi-vors and not cancer victims.

The organisation offers a buddy sup-port network where cancer patients caninteract with and receive advice and sup-port from cancer survivors who have asimilar profile, disease and treatmentprotocol.

She says the importance of supportwhile learning to live with cancer is fun-damental to developing a true cancer sur-

vivor approach.Dealing with each chapter of survival

involves more than medical management it requires attention to your psychologi-cal, social, emotional, spiritual, workingand practical needs as well.

Developing a patient active approachwhich empowers the patient to take somecontrol over the process and which en-courages them to see healing as morethan just physical, is an important out-come the cancer buddies tries toachieve.

Greeff says talking with someone whohas survived cancer and has regainedtheir life offers hope and a sense of em-powerment.

Through empowerment comes a posi-tive attitude, which has a profound effecton the outcome of the treatment.

PLWC has branches in the WesternCape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and in Mpu-malanga. Currently they are trying to setup support groups inall the small commu-nities such as Delft and Bishop Lavis.

Greeff says a challenge they face isfunding, which is always a problem.

We are in need of funding and thatswhy we are so grateful to be a beneficiaryof the Cause we Can! concert. We need torender a service to people. We are tryingto appoint two social workers to assist pa-tients in this crucial time. Anyone whowould like to assist or join the organisa-tion can call 021 949 4060.

The objective of the Urban RegenerationCampaign is to stabilise areas.

So said Alderman JP Smith last week du-ring a media briefing about the Bellville Ac-tion Committee Task Teams (ACTT) successin turning Bellvilles urban decay around.

Eight nodes across the city were identifiedfor urban regeneration and the VoortrekkerRoad corridor is one of them.

Areas within Bellville that were identifiedfor the establishment of ACTTs are the Bell-ville transport interchange precinct andVoortrekker Road.

This is the first time we are speaking pu-blically on the (mayors urban regeneration)campaign for Bellville, said Smith and ex-plained that urban decay is the collapse of

infrastructure causing areas to look neglec-ted. We started looking at copying the citydistrict without the big financial implicati-ons.

We looked at what we needed to do to re-plicate areas where urban regenerationworks, he said.

Smith said the focus was to clean up areaswhile better managing the space.

Successes by the department of law enfor-cement include relocating informal tradersto new trading locations, securing fundingfor converting a disused ablution block to alaw enforcement base and identifying andserving notices on problem buildings.

Part of the successes include good ongoingliaison between informal traders associati-ons and traders in Bellville.

Metro Evangeliese Sorg Cape Towns su-cesses inlclude reaching 314 new people du-

ring outreaches, providing 8 875 meals, refer-ring 50 people to shelters and holding 32 lifeskills workshops.

Alastair Graham, the citys Violence Pre-vention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU)programme manager said the objective wasto uplift former neglected and dysfunctionalareas, which are regressing rapidly.

The basis is to introduce a sustainable sy-stem of operations and maintenance of pu-blic infrastructure and facilities, in partner-ship with communities, Graham said.

ACTTs are responsible for the coordinati-on and oversight of urban management in anarea with respect to operations and mainte-nanceof public buildings and infrastructure;safety and security law enforcement operati-ons; informal trader management; integra-ted prioritisation and the compilation ofcommunity action plans.

    ANDR BAKKES

In the past 14 months, 31 424 motorists werecaught speeding on Bosmansdam, Plattek-loof, Vryburger and De Grendel roads.

Despite the speed limit on all these roadsbeing 60km/h, the three biggest offenderswere photographed going 152, 157 and168km/h respectively.

These shocking statistics were acquiredand released by ward councillor James Vosafter yet another accident on Vryburger Ave-nue in Bothasig.

Last weekend, a person hit a curb late atnight, rolled his Honda Ballade and de-stroyed a couple of walls and a potplant.

He escaped with only minor injuries. The residents who live near a particularly

deceiving bend in the road have had enoughof vehicles rolling past their houses in themiddle of the night. James Gough says its

the third time that a car has smashedthrough the wall between his and his neigh-bours property.

Its a hell of a sound! Like a plane crash!he exclaims.

The neighbour, Chris de Koker, likens thenoise to the end of the world.

All you hear is the car rolling and thud-ding, he recalls. I usually park where theHonda came to a standstill, but because mywife and I were leaving for Vredenburg earlyon the Saturday morning, it wasnt the case.

In May last year another vehicle rolled on-to his property, but that time it ended upright on top of his uninsured Golf.

Weve lived here for 20 years, James hasbeen here for 18 years, and its always beena problem. Nothing will be done about it, hecontinues. Vos is trying to get traffic lightsinstalled just before the bend in the road, onthe corner of Vryburger and Adam Tas

Street, but apparently the traffic comingfrom the latter isnt of a high enough volume.

Vos is also hesitant to have a zebra cross-ing over Vryburger Avenue, since it gives pe-destrians false confidence to cross withoutreally looking. Vos is, nonetheless, very con-cerned about the speed-junkies in Bothasigand surrounds. From January this year toend of March, 651 speeding cases were re-corded in Vryburger Avenue with the high-est being 103km/h. On Bosmansdam Road, 3029 cases were recorded during the same pe-riod, the highest being 127km/h. Vos con-cludes: The reality is that traffic servicesacross the board must be beefed up. I havewritten to the citys safety and security de-partment requesting additional funding forthe training and deployment of more trafficenforcers, as well as an operational strategyto deal with traffic violations in residentialareas.

Disregard for traffic laws is disturbing

Somebody should do something about it(someone)How hard could it be?Somebody should do something about it(someone)Maybe that someone is me

Jy is daardie iemand wat moet regmaak. In jou gesin, in jou woonbuurt, by die werk.

nie finansieel sterkgenoeg is omte help nie.

Alzheimers disease and dementia will affecta significant proportion of the elderly. Despiteeffective treatment beingavailable, this condi-tion is still underdiagnosed probably be-cause of stigma, fear, denial and mispercep-tion.

Anton Bohmer, clinical psychologist at theMemory Clinic in Panorama, will give a talkon brain health and brain disease on Friday18 May at the Trans50 Panorama Palms retire-ment village.

Bohmer is an expert on psychotherapy, neu-ropsychological and dementia assessments,

support for caregivers and family of peoplewith dementia and Alzheimers, anxiety, de-pression and adjustment problems, and be-reavement and trauma counselling.

He will discuss the different forms of demen-tia and the symptoms with regard to memory, behavioural problems and functionality of pa-tients.

The talk will start at 10:00 and the sessionwill end at around 12:00. Attendance is free ofcharge. Seats are limited. RSVP before Mon-day 14 May to Christelle van Noordwyk on021 930 6035/53.

    Brain disease to be discussed

    MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

They met each other when they were 14years old. She was playing netball whenhe arrived on his bicycle. She caught hiseye and now, after 60 years of marriage,Malcolm (83) and Enid (83) Islip are stillthe sparkle in each others eye.

They stayed friends through the blackoutsof World War II, and she waited five yearsfor him while he was doing his apprentice-ship, before they got married in their early20s. The rest asthey say, is his-tory, Malcolmlaughs.

The couplebelieves in talk-ing everythingthrough. This, they say, is thesecret to theirmarital success.

We alwaysdiscuss thingsbefore we makea decision. If wediffer, we dis-cuss, we dontfight. If one of usdoes not agreewith some-thing, we wontdo it. Once wetalked throughthe night about buying a second-hand carand how we are going to pay for it, Malcolmrecalls.

Enid agrees. We talk things out and wewould never speak ugly about the other. Inall these years, he slightly raised his voiceonce. I said Who are you yelling at? Andthat was it. He is always so very considerateand not demanding at all. We just got on. Wehave a good marriage. Sixty years! Can youbelieve it?

Enid would measure the distance betweenher furniture so they were in the exact sameplace every time. But she, on the other hand, had to cope with her workhorse husbandthrough the years. Malcolm worked as a mo-tor mechanic at the Goodwood municipalityfor about 40 years.

He can never sit still! Malcolm, you area workaholic, Enid complains jokingly, butwith good reason.

Malcolm did every single change and addi-tion to their home of 57 years himself knocked out walls, design and made all thecupboards, made beautiful furniture, in-cluding a grandfather clock, and lay out avery pretty and well-tended garden.

After his retirement he designed and builtradio-controlled glider planes and fixedfriends cars in between. Then the computerera kicked off and so too Malcolms obses-

    sion with thisnew technology.

In 1986 hebought his firstcomputer. Oneday I looked in-side to see whatmade it tick.Since then Ivebecome a tech-nician and havemy workshophere at home. Its a great hob-by of mine. Ivebeen fixing com-puters andhelped to set upa few networksand so, Mal-colm says mod-estly.

Their othersecret to marital bliss, they say, is to alwayshelp others in need. We did a lot for others.I cant stand to do nothing when others needme! Enid says.

Thats probably also why they still havelots of friends. We are very blessed. Ourchildren (son Ian and daughter Jennifer)and grandchildren (Craig, Kyle, Melody andMichael) and one great-grandchild, are alsoso good to us.

We watch a photo-film Malcolm made oftheir black and white wedding photos.

n Vergadering oor dievoorgestelde straatnaamver-anderinge is in Maart by dieBellville-Velodrome gehou n vergadering waar gemoe-dere opgevlam het oor dievoorgestelde veranderingvan straatname in Bellville.(Street with no name, Ty-gerBurger 22 Februarie).

Hy s verskeie ander plekke, soos terreine,

Alles in so n proses kosgeld, s Le Roux.

Students of Prestige Academy excelled dur-ing their ever-popular Easter egg drive bybreaking the previous record by collectinga total of 3 000 Easter eggs.

This drive has become a tradition at theacademy and students go the extra mile toreach the set target.

Liezl Meyer, community outreach co-or-dinator, says involvement in outreachevents means much more.

Our students did more than just collect-ing Easter eggs; they donated their time aswell.

Over a matter of three days, students, staff and management took to the streets todemonstrate their commitment to caringfor others in the Easter spirit, she said.

Part of the vision for this year is to reachout to various non-profit institutions. East-er eggs were donated to Boucher SafeHouse, Alta Du Toit, Ruyterwacht SeniorCentre, Waveren Primary School, Carel DuToit, Straatwerk and the cancer, heart, sur-gery and kidney units at Tygerberg Hospi-tal.

Participants said these events add an ele-ment of reality to the outreach project, be-cause it goes beyond mere lip service.

One student, Kristyn Rohm, SRC mem-ber, said this was an overwhelming andhumbling experience, one which she wonthesitate to do again.

This experience touched my heart, said the hostels Ujama Swart.

En my God sal in elke behoefte van julleryklik voorsien volgens Sy wonderbaarlikerykdom in Christus Jesus. Filippense 4:19

When would allarrive alive? At last count, almost 200 people had beenkilled on South African roads over theEaster weekend, 13 of them in the WesternCape.

Although this figure is down comparedto 2011, this in no way minimises the im-pact from loss of lives.

Easter is a time of worship for Christi-ans celebrating the resurrection of Jesus,it is a joyous time to spend with family andfriends; not intended for mourning.

On 3 April, Western Cape minister oftransport and public works Robin Carlisleexpressed his hope for no fatalities in theprovince on the roads at Easter. This wasnot to be.

While the authorities have done every-thing in their power from Operation Exo-dus to the Arrive Alive Road Safety Cam-paign to keep South Africans safe on theroads, the same cannot be said of the moto-rists.

The primary and ultimate responsibili-ty rests with the person entrusted behindthe wheel. Every driver is well aware ofthe murderous implications of drivingdrunk, speeding and driving unroadwort-hy vehicles, yet many, in the foolhardy be-lief that it will never happen to me, risktheir lives, that of their passengers and in-nocent fellow motorists.

Next Easter, can we turn Carlisles hopeof zero road fatalities into a reality?

Herwinnaar of rommelstrooier?

Early in February I had this vision thatwas to feed 500 needy fellow human be-ings, who will not have pickled fish onGood Friday, with pickled fish. I sharedthis with my church neighbours, friendsand family and wrote about it in the localcommunity newspapers.

Many did not believe it was possiblekeeping in mind the price of fish, but I pra-yed to God and left it in His care.

A miracle happened almost on the lastday before Good Friday when from allover I received funds and ingredients andby Sunday 1 April my large deep freezewas packed from the bottom to the lid withthe best fish fillets. My wife Tina and somemembers of the Ottery Baptist Churchcould make the pickled onions in very lar-ge containers. On Monday evening 2 Aprilthey fried all the fish, enough to feed over500 people. I give all praise to God for thismiracle.

On Good Friday 6 April after our churchservice we formed a convoy at my homein Ottery, of vehicles headed by membersof the Ottery Boyz motorbike club lead bytheir president Morne Blake. With hymnsblaring from speakers we proceeded toBeethoven Street, Steenberg to a housewhere 50 senior citizens were supposed towait for us, but on arriving we were extre-mely sad to find not one person at the ar-ranged venue. We then proceeded fromthere to the Community Hall in Bruce Ro-ad, Ottery where councillor MelanieArendse of ward 66 invited children andresidents from the area.

Members of my church and the OtteryBikers dished up plate after plate of delici-ous pickled fish, served with bread andhot cross buns. After this the convoy mo-ved to Freedom Park Informal settlementbut we had run out of bread. A second mi-racle occurred at Freedom Park when wearrived there. There was a couple who we-re also handing out food and bread. Theyhad spare bread and gave it to us. Everymember of the settlement received a plateof pickled fish. Only when we had fed thepoor did we go home. Some of the com-ments from those receiving a plate of pick-le fish I will never forget such as, Thankyou, you put food in our kids tummies to-day. When I consider what God has done,Joe Ortons words come to mind A grate-ful heart is the only door which gives en-trance to the presence of God.

I dont feel sorry for the young men withtheir excessively loud car music systems, the fact that theydont have thepersonali-ty to attract attention any other way orthat they face a future of deafness and im-potence.

I feel sorry for those people on night du-ty who struggle to sleep during the day,the nurses, doctors, police officers and all

the others whose reflexes may be a littleslower because some idiots inconsidera-tion has not allowed them to get enoughsleep.

I also wonder, as there is a by-law tocontrol this noise, why the police are notmore reactive?

Businesses big and small must make surethey are legal.

That is the message that Shaun Nero,a local social entrepreneur, wants to getout into the community.

He has taken on this task to make localsmall businesses aware of new legislationgoverning companies.

He explained there was some confusionwhen the Companies and IntellectualProperty Commission (Cipro) announcedthat closed corporations (CCs), will notexist any more.

Several communications were sent toinform customers, but most small to me-dium enterprise owners still do not fullyunderstand what it all entails.

I want to help them understand thatthey need have no fears about this legisla-tion. They just need to abide with whatthe Companies Act requires in terms oftheir operations.

Also helping with this task is ArthurJacobs of Business Zone who developeda very simplified financial managementsystem which could benefit small medi-um enterprises.

He also said that he had similar experi-ences with small and mediumenterprises.

They fear to register as limit-ed companies not realising thattheir annual turnover plays avery crucial role in auditing andother technicalities related togrowth in business, he said.

Jacobs helps small to mediumenterprises with simplified ef-fective bookkeeping which canadd value to their operation.

Nero concluded by adding thatit was vitally important for thesebusinesses to register with Cip-ro, and other related govern-mental departments because itall formed part of being on data-bases when it came to tendersand getting business.

Nero is planning to host an in-formation session in the futurewhere local small businesseswho are interested can find outabout how they can be helped.

For further information inter-ested parties can call him on 084598 9077.
