OUr heritageTyler Junior College was established in 1926 to provide rigid preparation for students

desiring to complete their studies at a baccalaureate institution. As a result of its solid

core curriculum, Tyler Junior College quickly earned a reputation for developing capable

and expertly prepared transfer students.

It is a legacy that continues today.

Many students begin their bachelor’s degree under

the guidance of our award-winning faculty. More often

than not, they out-perform their counterparts at the

upper-level institution to which they transfer. For

students electing a career pathway for immediate employment, Tyler

Junior College offers a wide array of cutting-edge programs within The School of Allied

Health and Nursing and The School of Applied Studies. Graduates from these programs

THE SCHOOL OFUNIVERSITY STUDIESThrough The School of University Studies, students planning to continue their

education toward a baccalaureate or advanced degree may complete core curriculum

courses designed to provide a sound background in the arts and sciences.

The 44-46 hours of core curriculum courses are guaranteed to transfer “en bloc” to all

state-supported colleges and universities in Texas.

Students selecting majors within The School of University Studies also benefit from

tailored four-year degree plans, designed through consultation with a school advisor.

These degree plans allow students intending to transfer to a specific college or university

to chart their baccalaureate pathway while completing their studies at TJC.

As you work toward an Associate in Arts degree through The School of University

Studies, you may also benefit from a wide range of preparatory courses within your

THE SCHOOL OFAPPLIED STUDIESThe School of Applied Studies is designed to prepare students for technical and

professional career fields upon completion of an Associate in Applied Science Degree.

Some majors also offer Certificate of Proficiency options – study plans that last approxi-

mately one year. The School of Applied Studies includes programs designed to train

individuals in specific career fields, such as surveying, computer information systems or

automotive technology.

These programs are not specifically designed for transfer to upper-level colleges or

universities. General studies or “core curriculum” courses taken as part of a required

curriculum transfer to Texas public colleges and universities – by State law – and may

transfer to private or out-of-state institutions. Depending upon the program and the

institution selected, other courses may also be accepted for transfer. However, transfer

of these credits to upper-level degree-granting institutions is not the intent of programs

within The School of Applied Studies. Students studying in these programs who later

decide to transfer to an upper-lever institution for completion of a bachelor’s degree

should consult their academic advisor first.

LIFE AS A TJC STUDENTStudents at TJC don’t have to look far for opportunities to interact

with friends or showcase their talents and interests. Community

service, religious activities, wellness activities, student organizations,

performance groups, clubs, honor societies, and intramural sports

keep student life vibrant. Performance opportunities include the

world-renown Apache Belles dance and drill team; the Apache Band;

music ensembles; theatre performances; vocal groups like Harmony

and Understanding, the A Cappella Choir and Concert Chorale; the TJC Cheerleaders

Apache Belles and Apache BandFor more than 50 years, audiences across the world have been entertained by the dancing

skills, choreography and poise of the Apache Belles and the musical performances of the

Apache Band. Each year members of these elite groups showcase their talents for audi-

ences throughout Texas, the U.S. and even abroad! In recent years, the groups have trav-

eled to Ireland, New York City, Washington, DC and France and they annually perform

together in Houston’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

Harmony & Understanding, A Cappella Choir and Concert ChoraleStudents bring their vocal talents to the stage through

these three groups. The Concert Chorale, open to all

students, represents the college in on- and off-campus

performances while Harmony & Understanding and

the A Cappella Choir are select ensembles that each

travel to as many as 25 performances per year. In recent years Harmony and A Cappella

have taken their shows as far as Japan, France and London!

Intercollegiate AthleticsFew two-year colleges have a legacy of athletic excellence like that of Tyler

Junior College. The men’s and women’s tennis teams have claimed 21

national championships. The school has also earned two national championships in

men’s basketball, one in ladies’ basketball, one in football and five in men’s golf. Team

sport opportunities exist in football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s

tennis, men's and women's golf, men’s baseball and soccer, and women’s volleyball.

Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (White Administrative Services Center, First Floor)

– Provides assistance in applying for various TJC scholarships and other grants and awards and

manages disbursement of scholarship and grant funds.

Career Planning and Placement Services (Pirtle Technology Room

128) – Assists students in locating temporary and long-term employment;

provides career exploration assistance and internships; offers regular pro-

grams for improving personal skills, resumes and interview techniques.

Support Services (Rogers Student Center, Second Floor) – Provides peer tutoring free of

charge in a variety of subjects; assists in the provision of accommodations for students with

visual, hearing, learning or physical disabilities; provides special accommodations for deaf stu-

dents, including interpreters, classroom accommodations, counseling and assistance with tele-

phone registration; manages campus TRIO Program for students who have special academic,

educational, or economic need, or who are the first members of their family to pursue a college

degree; provides grant-based assistance for returning adult students, single parents, and dis-

placed homemakers (which may include childcare, books, and transportation cost reimburse-

ment); through its computer lab offers self-paced CSR, PLATO and WILE tutorial programs so

that students may prepare for placement exams and the TASP exam; and offers the Cambridge

personality test to assist students in choosing a major.

Student Activities (Rogers Student Center, Second Floor) – Supervises intramural student

competitions, Student Senate and Homecoming activities; plans welcome-back and year-

round activities for students; schedules speakers and presentations for the annual Student

Enrichment Series.

Testing Center (Rogers Student Center, Second Floor) – Provides testing services for class-

room-based, Internet and Instructional Television courses; provides hundreds of industry certi-

fication and professional licensure examinations through its affiliations with Prometric Testing

and Prometric Testing of Thompson Learning; manages TJC provision of TASP, COMPASS,

Quick-TASP, ACT, SAT and other exams.

Registrar’s Office – Assists students in the registration processes for credit and non-credit

instruction.

Admissions Office – Offers tours and registration information for prospective students.

Vaughn Library and Learning Resource Center – Houses a library of more than 92,000

volumes, a complete multimedia center with audio and video production facilities, an electronic

research center with personal computers, and study carrels equipped with audio and/or video

monitors to assist students’ information needs.
