Aims:Students will understand styles of market research. They will use both to focus upon one product.

Objectives:All students will identify 2 forms of primary researchMost students will identify 2 forms of primary research and explain their functionSome students will identify 3 forms of primary research, explain and use their functions for assignment purposes

How Was Last Week’s Task?

Gamelogs!

How did you do? Do you think that game logging is an accurate form of research?

Page 7: U1 Lesson 03

Little Big PlanetTheir Experience My Experience

“Just as it is the most creative, having layers is at times the most annoying part of the game.”

Beautifully lush and colourful. Clever and inspired.

“I mentioned previously about how humor [sic] is very much a huge part of what makes this game such a joy to play. “

There are some really funny bits. But some of the funny bits transcend humour that would suit children.

“So, I asked my roommate to pick up a controller and found that playing with her was much much easier and a whole lot more fun as each level is a competition as well as team effort.”

Matt Vero thought that the game play was as fast-paced as I did. When we did ‘double team’ we found the game play much easier.

Primary Research

• What is it?• Why bother?• How can it help you in your studies?

Page 9: U1 Lesson 03

Primary Research

• Questionnaires• Survey• Interview• Focus Group

These are the BIG GUNS of production but especially market research…

Page 10: U1 Lesson 03

Questionnaires

Primary Research

• Set questions• Definitive amount of people• Easy to produce statistics• Usually face-to-face

Activity: Compile 3 questions to ask the people next to you (no more than 5 peeps) about your chosen game case study

Page 11: U1 Lesson 03

Survey

Primary Research

• Set questions• Definitive amount of people• Easy to produce statistics• Usually distanced research

TIP: Use Survey Monkey to produce and present research for this part of your game

Page 12: U1 Lesson 03

Vero’s Research - Questionnaire

What’s the Difference?

• Quantitative – “Figures”• Qualitative – “Facts”

Page 15: U1 Lesson 03

Activity

Read both sides of last week’s handout and pick out the following:

• 2 key quantitative research examples• 2 key qualitative research examples

Page 16: U1 Lesson 03

Quantitative Research

• Numbers – “100 people were asked…”• Percentages – “40% of RPG games are…”• Fractions – “1/4 of all FPS games have…”• Decimals – “3.25 hours of gameplay is…”

Page 17: U1 Lesson 03

Qualitative

• Feelings – “I felt that this was…”• Experiences – “When I got to the first checkpoint, I…”• Aspirations / Hopes – “I wanted it to go on longer…”• Expectations – “It was much better than I thought.”

Page 18: U1 Lesson 03

Asking Questions• What kinds of questions should you ask?

Quantitative – “How many times a day do you play?”, “How many consoles do you own?”

Qualitative – “How does gaming affect you?”

• What kinds of questions shouldn’t you ask? Random questions – not relative to the subject Personal questions – phone numbers, credit card

details etc.Remember that you are trying to establish facts in order to research the feasibility of a game or console.

Getting AnswersSmile!

Be grateful

Say ‘thank you’

Sound interested Explain yourself!

Look smart!

Page 20: U1 Lesson 03

Remember!• Primary research is where YOU ask the question and record the answers for YOUR needs. Copying existing research won’t help you with forthcoming assignments (or this one)• Take small steps. Don’t ask life-changing questions and you won’t be bamboozled by the answer• Planning is everything. Think about what you will do at every stage of research and pre-production.

Page 21: U1 Lesson 03

Next Week!

You’ll make a start on Secondary Research to help you with your Computer Game Case Study Assignment.

Remember: I am away in Budapest, so, someone else will be delivering the session. Please be punctual and douche-free.

Overview – What Have We Learned?

• Types of research• The key differences within Primary Research• Making plans

Have we met our outcomes?
