    In his welcome address, Mr. Humayun Bashir,Country General Manager, IBM, said thatLinux is a revolutionary technology and IBMbelieves that it has changed the rules of thegame. He said that just like the Internet, Linux

    is the next revolutionary change that the fieldof IT is experiencing. He emphasized theneed for a linkage between the industry andthe academia. He appreciated the role playedby the Government in promoting Linux inPakistan and initiatives taken by PSEB.

    Dr. Aamir Matin, Managing Director, PSEB, in his keynote speech, termed fiscal year 2004as an excellent time for the IT industry in the country. He highlighted that the domestic ITindustry grew by approximately 35% in fiscal year 2004-2005 and foresaw a growth of up to40% in the coming fiscal year.

    Dr. Matin shared his views on the shortage of facilities for technology companies. He addedthat the need of the day was a stronger strategic relationship with the vendor industry. In hisconcluding remarks he said that the Government is actively providing support to the IT industryto boost this industry to the aspired levels.

    IBM has again been positioned as thenumber one vendor based on softwarerevenue in 2004, according to IDC's"Worldwide Application DeploymentSoftware 2004, Vendor Shares byOperating Environment," IDC report#33697, July 2005.

    The application deployment softwaremarket analyzed by IDC includesapplication server and integration serversoftware platforms, web server software,transaction server and message orientedMiddleware, and all of the associatedapplication deployment adapters.

    According to the report from marketresearch firm IDC, IBM, with 37 percent,had the highest marketplace share basedon software license and maintenancerevenue for application deploymentsoftware on all platforms combined. In2004, total worldwide applicationdeployment software revenue for allvendors combined was $6.9 billion.

    Additionally, IBM experienced 18 percentgrowth and maintained its leading positionwith 19 percent of the applicationdeployment software revenue on theWindows platform, according to IDC.

    As part of its new systems strategy, IBMhas introduced a standards-basedvirtualization platform that will allowcustomers to pool, manage and optimizetheir IT resources across a variety ofservers, networking and storage devicesin order to help improve the economicsand operations of under-utilized IT assets.

    Parke Davis Signs BCRSAgreementParke Davis has signed an agreement forIBM Business Continuity and RecoveryServices (BCRS) that will help them meettheir business continuity requirements. IBMBCRS will provide them Tape Recoveryoptions for their IBM iSeries and Intelplatforms. BCRS provided them IBM iSeriesand IBM Blade Servers for the solution withuser work space, High Speed Tape Backupand Laser printing.

    IBM launched its BCRS Centre last yearin Pakistan. IBM BCRS is the leadingprovider of business resilience, continuityand disaster recovery solutions. IBM willbe able to draw upon more than 35 yearsof experience in assisting clients to developand implement their business continuitystrategies and plans.

    United Bank Limited (UBL) has signed anagreement with IBM Business ConsultingServices (BCS) to deliver an InformationTechnology (IT) Strategy to UBL.     Pakistan Tobacco Company (PTC) has acquired IBM eServer p5 servers for their DisasterRecovery site. They are currently running SAP application on their production site. Theseservers will provide a resilient back up platform. PTC chose IBM servers after an extensive

    exercise because of the superior high availability and IBM POWER5 technology leadershipin the UNIX market place.

    Government College University Selects

    IBM eServer xSeries with TotalStorage DS4300Government College University, Lahore, has selected IBM eServer xSeries (IntelProcessor based servers) for their IT infrastructure. They have acquired five IBMeServer xSeries model x226 to use them as mail, Proxy, Primary Domain Controllerand as a backup server. In addition, they have selected SAN DS4300 for their storageneeds.     MCB Enhances TheirComputing PowerMuslim Commercial Bank (MCB) hasselected IBM Unix Servers (IBM eServerp5) and IBM Enterprise Storage Servers(ESS) for their Symbols core bankingapplication and as part of the project haveacquired DS8100 and p570. The newDS8100 and 16 way logical partitionedbased p570 servers will be placed in theMCB Tower, and will be connected to themain systems of MCB through fibre opticconnection between the two MCB offices.

    MCB is in the process of setting up acomprehensive Disaster and RecoveryCenter and IBM Global Services team isworking with MCB team in its establishment.

    MCB has also acquired IBM's Intelprocessor based servers (IBM eServerxSeries) for the various modules of theSymbols application.

    xSeries Wins at Allied BankAllied Bank Limited has acquired a range of IBM eServer xSeries servers (IBMs Intel

    Processor-based servers) to run their banking application as well as their ATM driversoftware. They have selected IBM eServer xSeries Itanium based model x455 andmodels x445, x365 and x346.

    The bank decided to go for IBM eServer xSeries multiple range of servers after evaluatingIBM enterprise class server features which has far more advantages than the competitivebrands.

    (Intel Processor-based Servers)Jang Group, after a thorough evaluation, selected IBM eServer xSeries (Intel Processor-based servers) for their IT needs. They selected IBM eServer xSeries based on leadingtechnology benchmarks, low total cost of ownership and support. As part of their overallsolution, they have acquired IBM clustered x445 servers along with EXP 400 (DAS)and DS400 based Storage Area Network Solution. They also selected x336 serverswhich will serve as CRM, web and project server. The x346 servers would act as aNAS for file and print activities.

    In addition, they have acquired high performance IBM 3582 tape library for speedybackup and restoration purposes.

    IBM Events

    IBM eServer xSeries and TotalStorage

    IBM conducted half day events on IBM eServer xSeries andTotalStorage in Karachi and Lahore. Mr. Andy Parkinson, xSeries

    Regional Sales Manager IBM Middle East, Pakistan and Mr.Mohamed El-Shanawany, TotalStorage Sales Manager, IBM MiddleEast, Pakistan were the two speakers in the event. They presentedxSeries product covering market dynamics for Intel servers, IBM

    new announcements along with BladeCenter and TotalStorageproduct line, DS8000 and DS6000 announcements and Info Life

    Cycle for TotalStorage respectively.

    The event was attended by a large number of IBM xSeries andTotalStorage customers and prospects, and was very well received.

    As part of IBM worldwide developerWorks technical briefings, IBMorganized a full day event in Karachi and Lahore in July onProcess and Portfolio Management (PaPM) and Building bettersoftware with IBM software Development platform (SDP). ThePaPM briefing, covered by speakers from IBM US Mr. AlfredoGutierez and Mr. Randel Powel, featured demonstrations of theIBM Rational Portfolio Manager (formerly PMOffice) EnterpriseTool Suite, and the IBM Rational Software Development TeamUnifying Platform which includes an entire integrated set of Rationaltools.

    Mr. Paul Coates and Mr. Edward Tuggle, who covered the SDPbriefing, gave live demos which illustrated the capabilities of SDPtools. These tools are based on the Eclipse open source platformand provide the strongest end-to-end integrated set of tools forall aspects of software creation.

    The event was widely attended by Project Managers, systemarchitects, software developers, system administrators, ITManagers, System Analyst, Business development managers andreceived a positive feedback.

    IBM recently organized an event in Karachi on IBM Tivoli IT ServiceManagement. Mr. Lewis Stroke, EMEA Product Manager, Tivoli

    Automation Software and Mr. Bashar Qubbaj, Tivoli SoftwareSales, IBM Middle East, spoke about the recently launched IBMTivoli IT Service Management strategy that aims to give customersa highly integrated set of tools, ITIL-aligned process models andimplementation services to help accelerate the connection of

    people, processes and technology across heterogeneous datacenters.

    Linux and Open Source Adoption in Pakistan

    Mr. SM Baqar Muzaffar of UBL, Mr. Sardar Naufil Mehmud of ICI,Mr. Mehmood Ahmed of Al Karam Textile Mills and Mr. SyedMushtaq Hussain of City District Government Karachi presentedtheir case studies and shared their experiences with Linux & OpenSource adoption in their respective organizations.

    International Experts from IBM, Mr. Rudolf Simmer, Mr. BasharKilani, Mr. Ahmed Shanab and Mr. Kelvin Na from Novell AsiaPacific, talked about Linux initiatives in Governments in othercountries who have adopted Linux and Open Source. Theydiscussed many interesting facts and figures regarding the benefitsto be derived from empowering their organizations with opensource.

    Mr. Mohammad A. Sabzwari, Director LPI, a local open source

    advocate, presented his views on total cost of ownership andsuggested ways for organizations to carry out TCO analysis fortheir organizations based on their own unique requirements.

    Mr. Tariq Badsha of Ministry of Information Technology presentedPakistan Governments initiatives on open source. He highlightedthe progress made and plans for furthering the efforts on this front.

    Mr. Munawar B. Ahmad, Managing Director, SSGC and Ms. JehanAra, President, Pakistan Software Houses Association were invitedas session chairpersons to summarize the sessions and gavetheir views on the subject.

    IBM is the combined leader for Linux-based hardware, softwareand services according to IDC Data.

    Roma Business Machines, IBM Distributor, together with IBM,organized Lotus WorkPlace Services Express Event. Mr. RadovanDrsata, Lotus Brand Leader, IBM EMEA and Mr. RobertoBoccadoro, Notes Domino Lead Advocate, WorkPlace, Portal andCollaboration Software, IBM EMEA were the guest speakers. Thespeakers briefed on the IBM WorkPlace Services Express andgave demonstrations.

    IBM Business Partners, CorporITs and LMK Resources, displayedtheir solutions built on IBM Lotus. The event was attended by alarge number of IBM customers, prospects and competitiveaccounts.

    IBM Workplace Services Express is a new integrated teamcollaboration, document management, and instant messagingsolution with an integrated portal, which makes it a unique offeringfor businesses to improve communication and collaboration.

    A full day MIMIX for iSeries Customerstraining was organized by IBM in Auguston IBM premises. This training was a partof IBM's continuing commitment to help itscustomers to maintain the required MIMIXskills set. The training was attended bycustomers using MIMIX. Mr. Irfan Elahi

    A seven-day training on IBM Tivoli StorageManager (TSM) for IBM Business Partnerswas conducted on IBM premises inKarachi in July.
