Thankfully, despite the unprecedented hurricanes of late, economic development efforts are moving forward. Wewant to be sure you’re in the loop, and request that youcontinue to keep us apprised of your activities.

As part of our overall public relations and strategicmessaging, the Business Development Board, TheCounty Commissioners and our partners have beenvigorous in getting the word out with regard to businessrecovery and strength. We have found strong interestfrom the media in profiling "Success Stories" ofbusinesses and organizations who’ve experienced andovercome difficulty, as well as sectors and businessesthat carried on unfazed and unaffected. We are lookingfor positive stories from County businesses about howlittle disruption they experienced and the fast responsetime of local, state and federal partners, utilities andinfrastructure companies, etc. We want to capitalize onthese stories, and cultivate a positive Florida imagethrough news features, interviews, PSA’s and Op-Edpieces. In addition, we’ll post these stories on ourWebsite for all to see. We want to reinforce the realitythat Florida and Palm Beach County are functional, fullyengaged and thoroughly open for business. It is oururgent request to you that you help us in collectingthese stories.

Florida and Palm Beach County have so much to offer, going forward the BDB will do its part to educate thecountry to recognize and appreciate our county’sstrengths and to market this area to businesses aroundthe world. We will continue to identify strategiceconomic goals, develop new sophisticated benchmarksand focus on the needs of Palm Beach County, whilecontinuing to support and facilitate business transactionsbetween our members to augment your economicgrowth and global competitiveness.

As Palm Beach County, theTreasure Coast and the State ofFlorida recover from theunprecedented year of thehurricane, our communityleaders never hesitated andbegan to work togetherimmediately. The BDB and itsmembers, local leaders, the

Palm Beach County Commissioners, as well as the Stateof Florida worked diligently to provide immediate andongoing assistance to business owners as they began andcontinue to assess their damages and to work toward aspeedy recovery. Local businesses stepped up to theplate when asked and many went above and beyond thenorm to help fellow businesses and citizens in time ofneed. This county, as well as this state, has incrediblefortitude and shows what a great state we really are.

On behalf of the Business Development Board, staff andthe County, thank you for your tireless efforts. packing and loading a moving van describe

a moving man, my Great-Great Aunt Mary

and my wife, Janet, both qualify. In the days of horse and buggies, when most

women were home doing chores, Aunt Mary was out startingthe very first moving company in Palm Beach County,Brandon Transfer and Storage Company. That was in 1919.In 1928, Mary -- and Brandon -- joined the leading movingand warehousemen in major cities as a charter member ofAllied Van Lines. She operated out of a warehouse onClaremore Drive in West Palm Beach. (Cover photo, Mary Brandon worked along with herdrivers and helpers)

Mary was quite a pioneer – even in politics. Alwayspolitically active, she became the first woman to hold publicoffice in Palm Beach County. Years later, a park was named inher honor. Mary ran Brandon Transfer for nearly thirty years, until it was purchased by my grandfather, Herbert A. Lewis.

Grandfather Lewis built the business and moved theoperation to Tuxedo Avenue in 1951. A state-of-the-art

warehouse with a fur vault, wine storage and air conditioningwas constructed to stand up to south Florida weather.Twenty-four hour security surveillance and sprinkler systemswere installed to protect fine furnishings and artwork fromPalm Beach finest homes.

We’re still in the family business. My father, Steve Lewis, runs the operation, and Aunt Susanheads up administrative services. Butthese days, instead of horse andbuggy, I operate a streamlined dieseltractor-trailer with state of the artcomputers and tracking devices onboard. There’s a living space behindthe cab, and it’s even equipped with awasher/dryer. My wife, Janet, makes anumber of trips with me each year. Her name is proudly displayed on theside of the cab. While household moving has been our foundation, wehave developed some specialties to keep the crews busy all

year. We relocate factories and industrial plants, providerigging and crane service for the heaviest loads, and deliverhard to handle statues and artwork.

One of our unique services is provided by our medicalequipment moving division. Hospitals all over the statecontract with us to rig, move, and set up their live catscans, MRIs, and gamma knife equipment. Once riggedinto the building, these multi-million dollar pieces ofequipment are placed on air skates and pushed effortlesslythrough hospital corridors.

over the world to assist with origin and destination services.I visit and work with these fine companies all over theUnited States and have first-hand experience that

“Allied is the Nation’s #1 Mover” and Brandon

is rated by Allied’s Gallup Survey as Excellent.
