’n Paleontoloog van die Universiteit vandie Witwatersrand, dr. Jonah Choiniere, ensy doktorale student Blaire McPhee, hetgefossileerde beendere van ’n nuwe langreus, ’n Brachiosaurus , ’n kleiner dinosou-rus, ’n lang maer Diplodocus met ’n swiepen-de stert, en ’n Dicraeosaurus met lang penneop sy nek gevind.

Die vonds word in die April 2016-uitgawevan die tydskrifCretaceous Research gepubli-seer.

Volgens Choiniere weet hulle nie of dit ’nnuwe spesie is nie, maar minstens een vandie rugwerwels het eienskappe wat nog niein enige van die ander dinosourusse gesienis nie.

“Dit het ’n spleet onderaan en het net eenbeentjie. Ons weet egter nie of dit genoeg isom te gebruik om ’n nuwe spesie te identifi-seer nie.’’

Choiniere sê die souropodes (waaronderdie Camarasaurus val) is van die grootstediere wat op aarde was.

“Reg oor Suid-Afrika is fantastiese fossie-le, maar van die beste oorblyfsels van dino-sourusse wêreldwyd word in die Algoa-komgevind – ’n plek waarvan ons nie hoor asdaar van dinosourusfossiele gepraat wordnie.

“Die bekendste dinosourusfossiel wat in

die Oos-Kaap gevind is, is die Nqwebasaurus,wat verwant is aan ’n groep karnivore watsoos volstruise lyk.“Uit buitelandse navorsing kon vasgestel

In an effort to further develop research ef-forts, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Uni-versity (NMMU) has launched a Centre forRubber Science and Technology at its SouthCampus.

REDISA (Recycling and Economic Devel-opment Initiative of South Africa) partneredin 2013 with NMMU to establish an environ-mental rating centre, and the newlylaunched Centre for Rubber Science andTechnology is the first phase of the Centre’sdevelopment.The REDISA/NMMU partnership not only

makes relevant research within the Depart-ment ofChemistryatNMMUpossible, but ex-tends to other departments. For instance, theDepartment of Botany is involved in the de-velopment of Life Cycle Assessments/Analy-ses (LCAs), whilst the Computer Science De-partment is involved in the development ofa model that will assist in tyre identificationand harvesting. The Centre will be key ingrowing the NMMU’s already strong expert-ise in rubber and polymer science throughthe addition of advanced laboratory testequipment and funding for research stu-dents.

Drawing on NMMU’s historic experiencein rubber science and technology, the Centrewill focus onprovidinganalytical and techni-cal services, as well as training for the needsof rubber and tyremanufacturing industrieswithin South Africa.

“Rubber and rubber-derived products are

key tomany sectors of the economy, and hav-ing local expertise on par with world stan-dards will lessen our dependence on import-ed expertise, andwill help to support our ownmanufacturing base,” says Stacey Davidson,REDISA director.

“The work that the Centre for Rubber Sci-ence and Technology will do needs to be seenas not only important in helping to deal withthe problem of waste tyres, but also as a partof the bigger picture, which is the need tostart driving towards a circular economy.The rate at which natural resources are be-ing consumed means that many will run outwithin years, or decades at most. In allspheresweneed to lookathowwecanchangethe way we design, use, re-use, recover andrecycle,” says Davidson.According to Dr Percy Hlangothi, supervi-

sor in the research department, “The Centrewill not only house research projects that arerelevant to the industry and communityneeds, but will also offer learning pro-grammes and support services to benefit theindustry, while growing the national skillsbase.”To date, over 50 masters and doctoral stu-

dents have graduated from NMMU, havingcompleted their research projects in thePhysical and Polymer Chemistry ResearchGroup. Many of these graduates are em-ployed in the local tyre and rubber industrywith a number having gone on to establishrubber-related companies.
