DV5T 34 Art & Design: Creative Process

Unit AimAn understanding of the creative process is a key building block to the development of all creative practitioners. This Unit provides candidates with a vehicle for the exploration of the process, the development of visual language and an introduction to critical evaluation. It is not the purpose of this Unit to achieve a final product. This Unit may be delivered in isolation or it may be taught alongside other Units within the framework.

Learning ApproachesThe approach to learning and teaching is based on practical activity. Teaching will focus on general introduction to the group followed by one to one or small group tuition. Assessment is summative.

Learning will be student centred and experiential in nature. Students will be encouraged to take ownership of their ideas and pursue an individual interpretation of the theme and brief. Students will be encouraged to play and explore ideas, materials and processes reflecting and responding as and when new learning occurs. Students will be encouraged to respond positively to the unforeseen and unsuccessful seeing this as and integral part of the creative process.

Teaching ApproachesThe approach to teaching will include explanation, presentation, demonstration of using different painting media and techniques. All unit materials will be uploaded to the Virtual Learning Environment with examples of requirements in the form of images of relevant past students work. Question and answer sessions will also be encouraged along with one to one coaching and peer evaluation. Throughout the unit staff will refer to and show students relevant examples.

There are three Outcomes in this Unit:

Outcome 1 – Analyse the creative process Students are required to:Demonstrate an understanding of the key stages of the creative process.

Inter-relationshipbetween the key stages must be clearly identified ( Problem Solving). The

role of the creativepractitioner in the creative process must be explored through the

compilation of written/visualresearch of the work of at least two creative practitioners from a selected

discipline. Evidencemust be produced using either visual/written/electronic formats, or a

combination of these. Arange of source material must be explored (minimum three sources). All research material must be collated in a systematic manner.

Outcome 2 – Demonstrate applied understanding of a range of approaches for the development of the creative process Students are required to:Create a selection of developments in response to given stimuli ( Problem

Solving). (A© Aberdeen College 2010-11 Pack Responsibility – Angela Thouless

minimum of 2 x A3 developmental process sheets, or equivalent must be submitted.)

Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate use of materials and techniques through a

practical response to given stimuli

Outcome 3- Evaluate the creative process Students are required to:Produce either a written/visual/oral review of the creative process (Problem

Solving) and anevaluation of their personal interpretation of the given stimuli. (Minimum

800–1,000 words or5–10 minute oral presentation.)

The Unit will also provide candidates with opportunities to develop a number of Core Skills, which will include IT skills, oral/written communication and working with others in terms of working in groups to discuss the key stages of the creative process and inter-relationship between these Problem Solving is specifically developed in this unit in terms of researching, collating, planning, organising, and critical reflection/evaluation.

Curriculum for Excellence and Core Skills

In this unit, this is how we will cover the four capacities and identified core skills:

Successful Learners – candidates will be given a schedule of work in order to highlight deadlines for submission of unit outcomes for assessment, self-evaluation and reflection in conjunction with discussion with their lecturer. Meeting these deadlines and receiving positive and supportive feedback will allow students to achieve success in the project in terms of learning new skills and putting these into practice to meet evidence requirements and successfully pass their unit. Experimentation and the development of a range of approaches to the given stimuli is the key to this Outcome rather than the arrival at a final conclusion. They will be required to record these thoughts through annotation in sketchbook and within the record of attainment.

Confident Individuals – confidence will be developed in candidates by successfully achieving their outcomes and the evidence requirements of the unit, as well as allowing individual choice for this project in terms of subject matter, discussing their work with lecturers and others and receiving praise and support. This unit is intended to be an introduction to the concept of the process which underpins all creative activity - research, creative thinking and the generation of ideas and concepts. Through the exploration of visual language this unit provides opportunities for candidates to develop their personal vocabulary as well as an understanding of the creative process.

Responsible Citizens – This unit is intended to introduce candidates to the concept of critically evaluating creative work, and in turn evaluate their own approaches to the creative process. Candidates will be entrusted to use materials and equipment as instructed by their lecturer and this should be monitored at all times to ensure they are being responsible. Though candidates will be mainly working with 2 dimensional materials and media some may opt to produce combine or assemblage paintings using a combination of paint and unusual found/recycled materials which would ordinarily be discarded that may be 3 dimensional in nature. Peer learning and assessment will be encouraged in order for students to work with each other and provide constructive criticism and praise for one another. Learn within a team experience.

Effective Contributors - Though this project will be assessed with each individual candidate, they will all be expected to contribute to group discussions and peer evaluation. Working within the studio environment will encourage sharing of equipment, materials and ideas. The unit will have deadlines highlighted in the brief for each of the learning outcomes as would be experienced in a professional studio environment which candidates are required to meet. Work will be submitted at these points where discussion will be held with their lecturer on their approaches and progress. They will also learn research, developing, producing and presenting skills required in the art world. Candidates will be encouraged to review their own progress and responses within the creative process giving opportunities for candidates to reflect on responses to the given stimuli. This may take the form of informal/formal presentations or discussions.

Assessment ProceduresStudents will be issued with an Assessment Schedule at the start of the unit.

Formative Assessment will take place throughout the teaching block – students will be given an opportunity to review, discuss and present their progress to teaching staff and peers, as well as conducting self-evaluation.

Summative Assessment will take place at the end of the teaching block. Assessment work will be internally verified to ensure fairness and parity of standards.

Work assessed in Block 1 should be available for external verification (if required) until 30th April

Work assessed in Block 2 should be available for external verification (if required) until 30th September

A Record of Attainment/Candidate Achievement Checklist should be completed for each student, providing evidence of attainment and written feedback.

Re-assessment for Art & Design students may take the form of:

Students being asked to improve/work back into pieces of artwork already completed (where the artwork does not meet the required standard)

Students being asked to produce more work related to the original brief (where there is not enough work, or the work done does meet the required standard)

Students being asked to resit any online quizzes (where they have not achieved a pass on their first attempt)

Students being asked to improve any written work (where the first attempt does not meet the required standard)

Therefore no alternative Instruments of Assessment are necessary (unless it is a graded unit)

Remediation forms should be used to detail any re-assessment work required
