Dear Fans, Parents, Coaches, Administrators & Participants:
Welcome to the 2015 WHSAA State Drama Competition! Thank you for supporting this educational
experience for our students. We would like to wish all the participants the best of luck during their competition.
Activity programs provide valuable lessons for our students. Through the drama program, students have
learned the value of teamwork and have dedicated many hours towards developing a solid work ethic. Drama
also helps build self-esteem and character along with developing the self-discipline it takes to achieve a quality
performance. Participation in drama is a valuable part of the overall high school experience and is an extension
of a good educational program.
“We are High School”. In this world of technology where face to face communication is diminishing, high
school activities continue to be a vehicle to bring communities together and promote community pride. This
event enriches each student’s total educational experience and assists in promoting positive school and
community relations.
We are pleased with the overall results of the positive actions taken by our schools last year in promoting
sportsmanship. We thank all of you at this event for being positive role models and representing your
community in a positive fashion.
We would like to thank the Wyoming Educators of Secondary Theatre (WEST) for their time and effort in
preparing for this event. Their experience and expertise in hosting the State Drama Tournament ensures a
successful event each year. We would also like to thank University of Wyoming for opening their doors to all of
us and invite you to enjoy Laramie during your stay. “Break a Leg”!

Dear Wyoming Theatre Educators,
The WEST Board of Directors is pleased that you are preparing to participate in this year's State Drama
Competition. Our competition will be hosted by University of Wyoming . We are pleased and extremely fortunate for the
kindness and hospitality this newly completed facility.
We encourage you to read through your ENTIRE packet thoroughly. We hope the early information will allow
you to be prepared and organized for the upcoming State Drama Competition. RULE CHANGES have taken place. Read
the competition rules included in this packet!
READ THE DUE DATES CAREFULLY NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
If you wish to join the drama director’s organization W.E.S.T. (Wyoming Educators of Secondary Theatre) you
may pay your dues ($25.00) at the annual membership meeting held on the Saturday of competition (location to be
announced). Dues may be paid at registration on a separate voucher or by check to WEST.
A Mandatory Coaches Meeting will be held Thursday of competition at 12:00pm to welcome and inform all
coaches of issues affecting the running of a smooth and enjoyable State Drama.
Registration is located in the lobby by the new front entrance to the performing arts building 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Thursday of the competition. Please check the schedule that will be sent on listserv to find your assigned time.
Please keep your props and costumes on your school bus until your load-in time for competition. Your bus
driver should be available to unlock your bus at the appropriate time. CHECK YOUR SCHEDULES. The unload area
is the same place for all events and props, costumes, etc. are allowed to be placed in the large hallway before the
performance.
REMINDERS:
No high school student directed plays (this rule will be stricken for the 2016 competition)
Students need to attend performances, not hang around performance areas and make noise
Remind your students of proper theatre etiquette and behavior while in Gillette
All electronic devices must have headphones
No musical instruments are to be played in the hall ways or other camping areas
When choosing performance material, college judges suggest you choose a play with clear given circumstances and clear
character development
An AWARDS Ceremony will be the format for this year’s awards program. This has reduced the time for
presentations. Awards will be held in Band Concert Hall. As soon as we have more information, we will send out the set
schedule onto the listserv.
We ask each school to donate items for the “GOODIE BAGS” that we give to the CWC students as a Thank You
for the time they have donated. Please bring 35 items, one for each bag or a cash equivalent cash donation of an equal
amount is acceptable.

CHECKLIST OF HELPFUL REMINDERS
Before you go……….Checklist
1. Make your room reservation early to ensure rooms
2. Check on Travel Requests
3. Read the WHSAA State Rules-posted on their website and in this packet.
4. Have your students review the rules as they prepare for state.
5. Make a master list of your entries.
6. Be sure your school has paid the WHSAA fee for drama.
7. Prepare a room assignment list to be filled in for your students, you and the motel.
8. Have your students create nametags for your school participants (see samples). Be sure students have
completed concept forms for design projects and have these thoroughly attached to their designs.
9. Be sure to update your competitor change list and have the WHSAA eligibility list signed by your
administrator for any new students who were not on the original list.
10. Bring items to be sold at the theatre shop for the WEST Scholarship Fund.
11. Get 35 items to be placed in college student “goodie” bags or be prepared to donate a cash gift of equal
value.
12. Review Theatre Etiquette with your students - See State Packet (pg.10 )
13. Make a schedule of events for your school for your students to follow during State Drama.
14. Communicate with your bus driver so the bus is present with your props and costumes.
15. Designate where the bus will load the students.
16. Make sure your school checks the clean up assignment area before Saturday. Clean up after
yourselves. Make sure to use spirit gum remover if using spirit gum. This list will be placed on
the WEST website
17. Push pins/ T-pins, double sided tape.
18. There will be no practice on stages prior to performances.
Before returning home…….Checklist
1. Be sure you pick up ALL your technical entries
2. Using your master list of entries - Designate responsible students to check each item on the list as they
are brought to the bus or your packing area.
3. Make sure you send students to clean up your schools designated area as assigned in the packet. (pg 12.)
4. REMINDER: Send a press release to the newspaper announcing your winners!
5. Be sure to grab your tabulation bag.

Registration Checklist
Information you will pick up at the registration desk upon arrival at state drama:

Theatre Etiquette 1) No electronic equipment allowed. This includes cellular phones, beepers, alarm watches, radios,
etc.; they tend to distract both actors and viewers.
2) Because of copyright laws, no pictures, tape recordings, or video recordings will be permitted
inside the theatre.
3) Keep young children seated. Please sit near the aisle to move crying children quickly from the
theatre. A patient parent may not be disturbed, but others might. Please be considerate of others.
4) Absolutely NO food, gum or drink in the theatre! Refreshments should be enjoyed outside of the
theatre!
5) Please refrain from talking during the performance. If it is absolutely necessary, please keep it to a
low whisper.
6) Please remove your hat. It may obstruct the view of other audience members.
7) Do not leave the theatre during performances. The light from the outside makes a shimmering
silhouette with the door and your figure. This is very distracting to the actors and audience members.
8) Sorry, no audience members backstage. You may congratulate performers and crew after the
performance.
9) Being late to a performance is not acceptable. (Most theatres lock doors after a performance has begun.) If
you are late, please take a seat on the outside aisles and move to your seat during a break. Do not rudely
cross in front of people who are seated and watching the show.
10) Theatre audiences show enthusiasm for performance quality by laughter, clapping, and
moderate vocal congratulations (bravo!). The use of loud statements directed at the cast members and
interactions such as whistles, throwing items, yelling at individual actors is generally not accepted by
theatre going audiences. These actions are considered poor taste. We encourage enthusiastic, but
appropriate audience response.

ACTING SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION INFORMATION
FOR ADVISORS, COACHES, TEACHERS
Any senior is encouraged to audition for available scholarships. Performance, dance and technical scholarships are available.
o Wyoming community colleges, the University of Wyoming, and regional college representatives are present to view the audition
o Submit your student’s name on the Scholarship Audition Sheet to the scholarship coordinator (see deadline mailing list.)
Your student will need to fill out the Resume for Scholarship Auditions and the Creative Activity Resume.
o The student must have 15 copies of their resumes to be distributed to the college and university representative. COPIES must TURNED IN at the REGISTRATION desk at the time of registration.
o Scholarship audition applicants should be screened by their coach to make sure the student is prepared for the auditions. The student should understand that it is a waste of time to audition at State Drama if they are not planning on attending a Wyoming education institution.
o Student submitting technical resumes should have a portfolio to accompany the resumes and show the technical skills and work they have completed in the high school career. Photos, designs, school work can be included.
Your students will need to be on time at the designated location.
Student will be called into the audition room to present their audition material.
One adult may attend the audition with the student.

TIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP AUDTIONS
All seniors who are planning on attending a Wyoming colleges or university as a theater major or minor are encouraged to audition for available scholarships.
Fill out the Scholarship resume’ and Creative resume’ for the purposes of auditions.
You must make 15 copies of the resume forms to bring to the State Drama Audition.
Remember to provide a photo on the resume.
Acting Auditions- o Time begins with the introduction; no one will be allowed to start over. Students have a maximum of 2
minutes. The student should begin by giving his or her name, followed by the names of the selections. Students, please have your teacher go over the actual process of auditioning with you. Remember to rehearse the introductions, being as natural and articulate as possible. Rehearse your selection. The students who are most successful are those who have spent time rehearsing with their coach. Do not describe the scene or setting you will perform, just do it! Most of the time, viewers are familiar with the plays chosen. Students may be asked questions after they audition, but this time is not part of their two minutes.
o We would prefer to see two contrasting monologues, each one minute in length. By contrasting, we mean material that shows different sides of the performer. This contrast could mean one dramatic and one humorous piece, or one contemporary/modern language piece coupled with a classical piece.
o Unless a student has experience and feels comfortable with it, please avoid Shakespeare. Many times we see students bring in speech cuttings that have been successful at their speech meets throughout the year. While these do show off skill, we prefer to see material from plays that have fully developed characters. Novels, stories, poems, etc., are not meant to be performed, but read. Acting is action, and plays provide that type of material.
o If the student would like to sing, he or she may do so. A CD player will be provided. We will provide a person to run the CD for you. Usually 16 measures or one verse of a song is sufficient. Please sing a song from a musical, not a top 40 hit, and remember to act while singing.
o If the student would like to dance for part of the audition, he or she is encouraged to do so. Prepare a dance piece in the style of choice (modern, ballet, or jazz). Students may have a dance teacher help with the choreography, or they might prefer to choreograph their own audition material. If a student choreographs his or her own piece please let us know after the introduction at the beginning of the audition.
Technical auditions- o Technical audition applicants are given a space to display their works and spend approximately 6 minutes
discussing their background and goals. Technical students are encouraged to prepare a portfolio of their work. Photos, designs, and school work may be used in organizing a portfolio. Neatness and organization are encouraged.
o The student should remember to talk about the creative process involved with the works he or she is displaying. It is also advised that students rehearse what they plan on saying; this makes the student more confident and displays professionalism.
o Students will be permitted to temporarily take down any tech event in which he or she is competing, provided the judge is not judging the event at the time.
When a student auditions, we like to make it as relaxed as possible. A group of faculty can be intimidating, but please remember we want the student to do his or her best! We like to see talent! The student should wear something that is flattering but also comfortable. If you don’t feel right in nylons and heels, don’t wear them. Suits and ties are nice, but if they restrict your audition in any way, choose something else.

W.E.S.T. Wyoming Educators of Secondary Theatre has created a scholarship
fund. We will annually host a theatre shop at State Drama to build our scholarship fund. We are asking that each school
donate some type of theatrical item to be sold at state.
HERE IS WHAT YOU DO:
1. Bring donations from your school’s drama department to State Drama.
2. The shop will be set up near the registration table.
3. Items can be purchased throughout the tournament until 1:00 pm on Saturday
4. Any donated items can be purchased for your department with a voucher made out to W.E.S.T. Scholarship Fund.

*A cool costume or retro “stuff” (jewelry, quilts, pillows, hats, jackets, patches, etc.)

WYOMING STATE HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA COMPETITION HELD IN Cheyenne
Our drama students from ____________________________will join hundreds of talented and enthusiastic students
from around the state at the annual State Drama Competition. The competition will be held at University of Wyoming in
Laramie Wyoming. Competition begins Thursday, December 3rd, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. and culminates with the awards
ceremony in the evening on Saturday, December 5th, 2015 at University of Wyoming in Laramie Wyoming.
This event includes competition in the performance and technical areas of theatre. Acting events include: One Act
plays, Group Performance Art, two person scenes and monologues. Technical Events of the competition include: Scenic
Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Publicity Design and Theatrical Make-Up Design. Students may also compete in
the writing of Original Scripts for one act plays, two person scenes and monologues. Scholarship Auditions for Wyoming
Community Colleges and the University of Wyoming and out of state institutions are open to high school seniors and
provided by the respective institutions of higher education in the state and surrounding states.
All performances are free and open to the public. Design entries are on display in the designated area of the Performing
Art building at University of Wyoming .
In addition to a weekend of activities for theatre students this annual event is also the time in which the Wyoming
Drama “Director of the Year” and “Administrator of the Year” is chosen. An outstanding drama teacher and administrator are
chosen annually from among their theatre educators and coaches. This prestigious award is presented during the Saturday
awards assembly. The Wyoming Educators of Secondary Theatre sponsor this event for both awards, as well as the
Outstanding Theatre Administrator.
Awards for the students include individual placing medals in all areas of competition. Students are selected by the
judges of each event, to receive the prestigious “All State” medals. Sweepstakes trophies for the schools are given in three
categories, 1A/2A, 3A and 4A.
The public is encouraged to attend the Wyoming High School State Drama Competition. Performances will begin
Thursday, December 3rd, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. A listing of the events will be available at the WEST information desk located
near the entrance to the Performing Arts building at University of Wyoming. Wyoming residents should experience the talent

State Drama Rules 8.4.0 ELIGIBILITY:
Prior to arrival at the tournament, any attending school must have on file in its principal's office a list that has been approved by the member school's principal verifying that each student has been found academically eligible to participate (cast, crew, assistants, model, responsible student, etc.).

Each school is allowed 5 drops for no extra cost. After the first 5 drops, a fee of $25 will be added for each drop to be billed by WHSAA. 8.4.2 ATTENDING:
Schools that wish to observe the various performances are encouraged to attend the tournament. These schools will only be charged a school registration fee of $35.00.
8.4.3 CHOICE OF MATERIAL: It is strongly recommended that Directors use good judgment in selection of the play or material that is high school appropriate. Judges may be offended and students may pay a consequence for this choice. Obscenity Clause and Procedure for Grievance It is up to each school’s administration to determine that each production brought to the Wyoming State Drama Competition does not offend the moral standards of their community and that obscenity has been eliminated. If the script has been read and the staged production viewed and approved by the administrator of the producing school, the production is eligible for presentation at any contest site. 1.) Each school’s administrative team* must affirm this review when they sign the “Community Standards Compliance Form.” If the play cannot be cut to meet community standards, then the play should not be selected for contest use. It is the duty of each director and their administrator to make a responsible selection for the students you work with and the community you represent. Make sure that you discuss the choice of script and questionable language and business with your administrators. *administrative team may include principal, activity directors, and/or school board. Because schools differ in size and personnel, we have left this term unspecific. However, this term usually applies to principals, superintendents, activity directors, and/or school board. 2.) Directors who have secured approval from their administration as specified on their “Community Standards Compliance Form” may also choose to submit an e-mail WEST if they feel their material requires a preface or caution to viewers. This will be added to the list serve as a way for other directors to decide if such material is something they wish their students to attend. Although such disclosures are NOT required, establishing communication among directors is appreciated in an attempt to create a safe and educational environment for all schools and guests. 3.) In the event that WEST or WHSAA is contacted regarding “obscene material,” it is proposed that the following procedure be followed. Complaints must be submitted via e-mail to the WEST Board within two (2) weeks of the State Competition. If outside of that window, the grievance will be dropped. WEST will: a. Contact the administrative team listed on the compliance form b. Review complaints against the school with administrative team member/s c. Administrative team will provide a written statement to WEST regarding said compliant d. WEST Board will pass both written grievance and administrative statement on to WHSAA e. WHSAA will review written statements and decide what further actions are necessary: 1. Charges dropped 2. Meeting with director and administrative representative and WHSAA Board 3. Removal of WHSAA placing or All-State accolades 4. Warning/Probation (If persistent complaints possible suspension from competition possible)
Plays presented may be either a one-act play or a scene or scenes from a longer play. If a cutting from a longer play is used, the selection should be relatively self-contained and self-explanatory and should not require either knowledge of the entire play or an extended narrative introduction.

Each school must submit a number list to the State Drama Competition Tournament Director by the last Friday of October. This list does not require student names. It gives the State Drama Tournament Director the number of entries in each category so he/she may begin a basic schedule.
Each school must submit Official Entry Forms, Competition Sign-up Sheets, Registration Forms and Scholarship Audition Sheets to the State Drama Tournament Director / Scheduler AND the WHSAA by the SECOND WEDNESDAY OF NOVEMBER. ALL paperwork MUST be returned as per the DEADLINE CHECKLIST in the registration packet.
Student Conduct: Students need to attend performances, not hanging around performance areas, halls or lobby. It must be quiet around all performance areas at all times. Impress on your students how to behave in a theater. NO BOOM BOXES ARE ALLOWED ANYWHERE!
Rules of WHSAA apply at all times. Students must wear nametags at all times except during performances. Nametags are to be provided by each school for the State Drama Tournament.
8.4.40 LEVEL OF COMPETITION:
Students wishing to compete in any level in any technical category at the State Drama Tournament may enter one year at any level, however, once a student has competed at a specific level the student may not repeat or retreat to a lower level. Level 4 may be repeated for a student’s four years of high school. The level at which a student enters a category will be left to the coach’s discretion.

8.4.43 GROUP PERFORMANCE ART:
This is a presentational art.
Material: Any type of literature may be used, a single piece of literature or an assemblage of many different pieces of literature centering around a theme.
Performance: Off stage focus, focus toward the audience, rather than looking directly at the other characters is used. Movement is suggestive, symbolic and stylized rather than representational and realistic as in conventional acting. The stage pictures should result in an ensemble presentation in which the interpreters are a continual part of each scene. The literature should suggest ensemble dress; however, this is not a main focus. Interpreters should use their suggestive portrayal of the character(s) and not make-up or costume. Suggested the ensemble remain small, 8-10 interpreters. Scripts may be used in a representational manner.

8.4.44 MONOLOGUES:
This must be a cutting from a play, an original creation, screen play, or a published monologue book. The actor must portray only one character. Scenes should be blocked for proscenium.
Monologues are divided into two categories: Dramatic and Humorous
Performance Area: A classroom area is used for performance.
Time Limits: There is a 4 minute maximum with no minimum. Performers will be visually warned at 4 minutes and verbally cued to stop at 4.30.
The time will begin after the introduction.
Introductions: Performers need only to state their name, title of monologue and school.
Royalties: No payment required.
Critiques: Refer to evaluation form included in the registration packet for performing guidelines. The same adjudicators will judge all monologues. Oral critiques will follow a group of performers.
Set-Up And Strike: Set up is limited to one minute, and includes all clean up of the performance area.

8.4.45 TWO-PERSON-SCENES:
Two person scenes are divided into two categories: Dramatic and Humorous.
Must be a cutting from a play, an original creation, screenplay or a published scene book. Each actor of the two-person scene must portray only one character. Scenes should be blocked for proscenium.
Performance Area: A classroom area is used for performance.
Time Limits: There is an 8 minute maximum with no minimum. Performers will be visually warned at 8 minutes and verbally cued to stop at 8.30. The time will begin after the introduction.

8.4.46 SCENIC DESIGN: • One scene design entry per student.

• All information should be included in an 8 ½ “x 11” research notebook. • Designers will use graphic standards (USITT) for all scenic designing. Visit the USITT website for standard designs (see the WEST website for link). Design may be computer-generated or hand-drawn. All floor plans and models should be executed in the same scale. All notebooks need to have labeled tabs for organization. Designers may be interviewed to defend designs. Students should focus on one major location in large shows; however, one acts or standard non-musical shows may be the best choice.
o 1st year:
Floor plan scale of either ½ inch or ¼ inch mounted on a display board no larger than 28” x 38” Only 1st year mounts the floor plan. All other years will place floor plan into the notebook. A research notebook containing the following: • An extra floor plan folded to fit into the notebook with the title block facing front. • One page maximum design concept form including a brief description of the play and a discussion defending the choices made. • A collection of images showing the progression of research in selecting elements of the set including furniture, textures, paint samples, etc. • Using your choices create a collage showing the color and the aesthetic relationship of set elements used on stage. • Sketches from the audience point of view.
o 2nd year :
All requirements from 1st year (excluding the mounted floor plan) Front elevations of the design using no color should be created including the dimensions of each element (excluding the furniture). Front elevations will be mounted on a display board no larger than 28” x 38”.
o 3rd year:
All requirements from 1st and 2nd year. (excluding front elevations) Rendering or Model- • If a Model is chosen it needs to include a simple structure of the theatre performance space including proscenium arch if applicable, wing space and walls. Model needs to fit through a single standard door. • If a Rendering is chosen it needs to be a perspective image created in a color media and matted on a display board no larger than 28” x 38”. • Front elevations placed in the notebook.
o 4th year :
All requirements from 1st , 2nd , and 3rd year: • Construction drawings showing the way each “built” element is to be made. Drawings should be large enough to show detail but small enough to fit in the research notebook. Include the dimensions of each element. Separate each drawn flat from one another and three dimensional objects should be shown in ”exploded” view. Construction drawings are to be placed in the notebook. • Critique: Refer to evaluation form included in the registration packet for guidelines.
8.4.47 COSTUME DESIGN: • One costume design entry per student. • All information should be included in an 8 ½ “x 11” research notebook. • One costume plate per page can be placed into plastic sheet protectors. • Designs needs a face, it may be a simple cross. • Hair is important, especially if you are doing a period show. • Figures should not appear to be floating. A simple line for grounding is acceptable. • One character per plate, unless you want to include a rear view or detailed accessories. Hats, gloves, shoes, etc. • Material swatches must accompany each design. • Students will duplicate one costume plate (8 ½” x 11”), mounted, and display it for the public. • Fabric swatches and concept statement will be placed on the page facing the costume design they reference. • Place swatches on the outside of plastic sheet protectors:
o The swatches should be proportional with the largest piece of material being the material used the most in the design and decreasing to the
smallest swatch being the material used the least in the design.
O Be sure to remember to include the swatches of trim material.
• The costume design should be labeled with:
o Name of the play, act and scene
o Name of the character
o Placed on the design written by hand or a separate typed label
• Artist must sign all designs. • Research should be placed into the notebook and contain: • A collection of information showing careful and diligent investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and development of the practical design rationale. o 1st Year:
Three costume plates of any single or multiple characters. These must be three different costumes.
o 2nd Year:
Six costume plates of any single or multiple characters. These six must be different costumes.

Design the full show - every character, every costume, with a minimum of twelve costume plates. These must be twelve different costumes. o Display: Contestants are encouraged to bring constructed costumes of her/his design if mannequins are available. These costumes will not be
judged nor will it affect the critique process. 8.4.48 MAKE-UP:
Make-up is divided into two categories: realistic and fantasy (non-realistic).
Realistic is defined as a human face, which may have natural or inherited deformities or injuries. Example: injuries include bruises, cuts, scars, burns, wounds, etc.
Fantasy (non-realistic) is defined as a human face, which has been transformed into something non-human. Example: animal, inanimate object, alien, mythical creatures, and horror, etc.
Artist should be prepared to verbally defend design choices. The individual character’s design is based on the designer's character concept. The character is created by the student based on the limits of the event.

Design: You must have a drawn design of a side profile and full frontal view. The sheet provided in the packet shows the view needed and placed in the report cover. A one-page character analysis and design concept needs to be placed in the report cover.
Oral Critiques: Critiques will follow application times.
Only report covers with three brads and pockets are to be used. No Three Ring Binders.
Hair may be moderately styled. All prosthetics and embellishments need to be applied during the application time. REAL MAKE-UP 1st year:

o 1st year:

Show all the theatre space including: first row of sight lines, cyc, etc. Label acting areas on floor plan with Roman numerals (no area circles needed). Use one to three research images per different look, mood, or scene to communicate the visual design and label where it should be executed in the play. One page maximum design concept form: • A brief description of the play • A discussion defending the choices made. • Use of acting/lighting areas Show a lighting key diagram for one area, showing angle of light, instrument type, gel color, other lighting needs (ie. gobos, strobes, etc.) and a brief description special actions in that area.
o 2nd year
All requirements for 1st year Light Plot drafted onto floor plan (no overlays). If facility is too large for all light positions to fit scale drawing, adjust to fit on paper and note the adjustment.
o 3rd year:
All requirements for 1st and 2nd year Channel Schedule(Hook up) • A spread sheet of inventory based on the channel number that includes the following: • information about the circuit number • dimmer number • instrument number • instrument location • wattage • color • gobos • focus area • purpose • notes Magic Sheet for specific effects • A pictorial layout of how the lights direction relates to the stage.
o 4th year
All requirements for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year Cue spread sheet with all cues for the entire show. There needs to be a minimum of: • Cue number • Page number from script • Description of cue (ie. scene change, effect of light) • Channels • Intensity • Time Duration 8.4.5 ORIGINAL SCRIPTS: Team Size: Single student entry only! Students may enter the competition under any of the following three categories: (All three categories will be judged separately.) 1. Original Monologue - Material written to be performed by only one person. 2. Original Two Person Scenes - Material written to be performed by only two people. 3. Original one-act play - Materials written to be performed by a cast of whatever number required. Limitations on original scripts: Each school will be allowed a total of six script entries. A school will be able to submit entries in any category up to a total of six (example - 2 One Acts, one mono, 3 Two Person Scenes or 1 One Act, 5 monologues.) Criteria: Length of each script must adhere to the already existing rules found in each category. Material must be original and not an adaptation of an already existing piece of literature. The student must mail one clean copy, NO FAXES, postmarked to the judge as dated on the Deadline Check List in the registration packet. The script should be typed in an accepted play-script format which includes cover page (including the category the writer is entering), cast list with character description and stage directions. Critique: Plot development, structure, character/relationship development, use of language and action, and theatrical merit. No performance of any script entered in this competition will be considered in the adjudication of this award. The competition was developed so that acting can be judged on the merit of acting, and writing on the merit of writing. 8.4.6 STATE DRAMA SCORING AND AWARDS Awards will be presented at the end of the competition at a general assembly. Sweepstakes Trophy: Schools must enter six of the eleven competitive areas, one entry must be either Arena, Proscenium or Group Performance Art, in order to be eligible for sweepstakes. The highest place for each team in each of the eleven competitive areas will be recorded. Then the six lowest scores of the eleven competitive areas will be added to determine the sweepstakes award. In monologues, technical and original script competitive areas, where a school may have multiple entries, only one score from each competitive area will count toward sweepstakes. Trophies will be awarded in the following areas: 1A/2A, 3A, and 4A. Sweepstakes winner and runner-up trophies will be awarded for each division. Arena, Proscenium, and Group Performance Art - Team Score: Three judges are assigned to these events. The team score is calculated by taking the average of the three judges’ scores. First, second, and third place trophies will be awarded in each category. Arena, Proscenium and Group Performance Art- All State/Honorable Mention: Each actor is evaluated individually by each of the judges. When a student receives a recommendation from one judge they receive Honorable Mention; when they receive two or more recommendations they are then awarded All State Honors. Monologues and Two-Person Scenes - Team Score: These two events are judged by two judges with the team score coming from the average of the two scores. Medals will be awarded for first, second and third place in humorous monologues, dramatic monologues, humorous two-person scenes and dramatic two-person scenes. Monologues and Two-Person Scenes - All State/Honorable Mention: Each actor is evaluated individually by each of the judges. When a student receives a recommendation from one judge they receive Honorable Mention; when they receive two recommendations they are then awarded All State Honors. Technical Areas - Team Score: Medals will be awarded for first, second and third place in each technical category at each level of competition. Each technician’s design is judged by one judge. Technical Areas - All State: All State Medals will be awarded to the technicians that excel in their area of competition. The judge judging the event will decide awards. No Honorable Mention in Tech areas. Original Scripts - Team Score: One judge judges each category prior to the actual days of competition. Medals will be awarded for first, second, and third place in one act writing, monologue writing, and two-person scene writing. Original Scripts - All State: All State Medals may be given at the discretion of the judge. No Honorable Mention in Tech areas.
