Melbourne Cup Launch
Also on that day Tuesday the 16th
we have the Melbourne Cup launch happening at school. As you probably
know the Cup is taken on a big tour to promote the event. This year it will go throughout Australia, Malaysia
and New Zealand. As part of the day we will be having 32 students dressed in silks who will choose the order
of the places that the cup is going to visit. Subzero is likely to make a visit to the school and lots of press and
dignitaries will be coming to the launch. If the weather is fine the launch will take place on the oval and if damp
it will happen in the hall. Dress ups are welcomed. Fascinators and fashion on the fields is encouraged. Parents
most welcome to attend and be part of the fun. We will be getting ready at 8:50 for a 9:00 a.m. beginning. The
choir will be performing at the beginning of proceedings. Hope to see you there.
Supporting your child to make decisions Issue No. 015
When you let your child make decisions – or contribute to family decisions – you also recognise your child’s right and
ability to have a say in their own lives. Making decisions is an important way for your child to take responsibility and to
become independent.
Giving children real choices gives them some control over what they do. Offer a baby two rattles and they will reach for
the one that attracts them most. If they push a plate away it means they’ve had enough to eat for now! If a baby turns
their head away, they no longer want to play peek-a-boo.
Making choices is an important step in growing up and builds confidence and self-esteem. It can even minimise conflict
and lead to greater motivation because your child is involved in experiences that they have chosen.
If your child attends a high-quality early education and care service, you will have seen the educators letting your child
make decisions or offering your child choices. They are helping your child to build a strong sense of identity and
wellbeing.

International Competitions & Assessments for Schools (ICAS)
The University of New South Wales is offering your child an opportunity to participate in the International Competitions and
Assessments for Schools (ICAS).
ICAS assessments have taken place annually in schools for over thirty years and in twenty countries. Educational Assessment
Australia (EAA), who design and deliver the assessments, is the not-for-profit arm of the University of New South Wales.

ICAS:
is an annual skills development assessment program in key areas of learning for students in Years 2–12; We will look at Mathematics this year at Kensington PS
gathers performance information through a 30–60 minute supervised in-school test
provides a continuous, independent and comprehensive record of a student’s performance, and maps their development over the full period of primary and secondary schooling
enables the progress of each student to be mapped in each skill against their previous performance, demonstrating personal improvement no matter the starting point
uses fellow students’ results as a reference point; results are mapped against all students sitting at the same year level in Australia
provides an excellent preparation for national testing
enables students at all levels of ability to participate; ICAS contains questions designed to specifically explore the abilities of students of all standards – this includes those of both lower and higher levels of achievement
medals are awarded to the top students per state in each subject and year level (when sufficiently meritorious and the test was sat on the official sitting date)
achievement certificates are awarded to all students at a range of levels: 1. High Distinction to the top 1% of students 2. Distinction to the next 10% of students 3. Credit to the next 25% of students 4. Merit to the next 10% of students 5. Participation to all other students
The closing date to sign up is 14 July (i.e. 2nd day of next term). We need the forms back by the 22nd of June. The fee for this test is $8.80 Enrolment forms are on our website

Ceramic arts by the Preps
Currently on exhibition outside the staff room.
Inspired by Shaun Tan’s Book and animation.
“The Lost Thing.”
What did we learn?
We explored and discovered the sensory qualities of clay.
We learned how to look after the clay so it is soft for next time.
We learned Safety procedures for working with clay, for example, how to look after and clean the work area
to prevent clay dust in the air.

We used objects to learn to create texture on the surface by pressing incising and carving.
We learned how to manipulate and model the clay and how to make a pinch pot base for the sculpture.
We learned how to pull out and join on features using the three S’s score, slurry and smooth.
We are using arts language in our conversations about our clay sculptures.
Hof art project. CAN YOU HELP?
We have set the date for the pouring of the concrete… Friday the 17th of July.
First Friday of term three.
On this day Melissa and Linda will need a team of adult helpers to support the
students to install the ideas that they have been preparing all term, into the wet concrete. If
you are available to help please let Linda know so she can coordinate times.

Winter Solstice
Student Reports
Winter Solstice is on the 19th June, starting at 5.30pm in the Gathering Space. Please remember to bring
marshmallows, sticks to roast marshmallows on and some savoury nibbles to share. We will be preparing
pizzas on the night
Student Semester 1 Reports On Friday June 19th your child will bring home a large white envelope containing their Semester 1 Report. All
government schools in Victoria report against the same state-wide standards in Years Prep to 10, giving parent’s a clear
picture of their child’s progress.
Physically children grow and develop at different rates. This is also true of children’s progress academically. Sometimes
children show periods of rapid development with their learning followed by periods of consolidation. During the
consolidation phase children learn to apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge to a wide range of situations,
deepening their understanding and enabling them to demonstrate this in a variety of ways.
It is important for parents to consider this when reading your child’s report, as your child may have spent some time in
the consolidation phase of learning. As the reports are only programmed to reflect a standard six months growth, your
child’s report may appear to indicate that he/she has not made any progress this semester. However, the reality is your
child has continued to learn and consolidate their understandings but may have just fallen short of the standard six
month’s growth.

Understanding the graphic section of the student reports (located on the inside cover of your child’s report)
What do the A-E ratings mean?
In every school:
‘C’ rating means that a student is at the expected standard at the time of reporting and that their learning is on track
‘B’ rating means that a student is above the standard expected for their year level at the time of reporting
‘A’ rating means that a student is well above the standard expected for their year level at the time of reporting
‘D’ rating means a student is below the standard expected for their year level at the time of reporting
‘E’ rating means a student is well below the standard expected for their year level at the time of reporting
What do the dots and lines on the graphic show?
The solid dot shows your child’s achievement for June 2014.
The shaded vertical bar shows the expected level of achievement for your child’s year level for this time of the
year.

Grubbies News
A big thank you to all the classes who have added their scraps to our compost bin in the garden. I’m pleased
to report we now have a pile that is behaving as all good compost piles should! It has loads of happy worms,
just the right amount of moisture and definitely NO unpleasant smells. So well done and keep it going KPS.
Our compost bin doing its thing A close up – see the happy worm
The way it used to look a few weeks ago when everything was still waiting for the worms, little
creatures, bacteria and fungi to do their thing and work their magic.
