Developing an Effective Worship Planning Team

What is a GPS?

• Global Positioning System• Based on traditional maps (standards)• Uses modern technology such as computers and

geosynchronous satellites for location and direction.

• Has an interactive, informative user interface. • Provides much more detailed information than

a traditional map.

You Are Your Church’s GPS

• God Positioning System• Based on traditions (Bible and doctrine)• Use modern technology and presentation

methods to help users understand where they are and how to get to where they need to be.

• Have an interactive, informative user interface.

• Provide a wide variety of media in order to reach out to a broader audience.

Step One: Choose the Team

• Starting off with the right perspectives and attitudes is key to developing an effective Worship Planning Team.

• Every member of the team needs to be FIRST:– FLEXIBLE- Willing to accept new ideas.– INVESTED- Motivated by a sincere love for God and a

desire to share that love with others.– RESPONSIBLE- Willing to complete all assigned tasks in

a timely manner.– SANCTIFIED- Living a life worthy of respect as you

strive to become more like Jesus.– TRUTHFUL- Able to be honest and sincere about your

feelings, without hurting others in the process.

Diversity is a good thing. Include your:– Worship Leader (if you have one on staff)– Church Leaders- Pastor/Elders/Board Members– Music Ministry- Traditional and Contemporary– Technical/Media Team– Drama Team– Greeters/Ushers– Youth Ministry– Congregation

Step Two: Set a Goal

• The Worship Planning Team must be RISKY when setting the goal for transition:–Be Realistic–Be Intentional–Be Specific–Be Kommitted–Be Yourself

• What specific opportunities exist in your community, and how can you take advantage of them?

• What particular strengths and talents does your congregation possess that can be used in ministry?

• How can you be most effective in truly reaching people for Jesus?

Step Three: Establish Your Route

• Walk, Drive, or Fly?• Get everyone headed in the same direction.– Master Calendar (Google, Outlook)– Social Media Page (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)– Shared File Access– Dedicated Website (Community Church Builder,

Planning Center Online)• Expect some detours and bumps in the road.

Step Four: Gauge Your Progress

• Use metrics to see how you are doing:– Attendance– Connection Cards– Conversions/Baptisms– Congregational Diversity– Unity of Spirit

• Ensure that everyone is still moving together in the same direction toward the goal.

• Don’t be afraid to admit that something is not working as well as you had hoped.

Step Five: Enjoy Your Success

• Recognize and reward your teams and staff. Changing lives for Christ takes lots of energy and teamwork.

• Start thinking about renovations and expansion projects. You will be blessed abundantly for your faithfulness…
