Welcome to the Valley Charolais Bull sale!

While we have been raising and selling our purebred Charolais herd sires for a few years now, we are very excited to be holding our sale for the second year at the BC Livestock Co-op in Kamloops.

The bulls we have on offer this year are hard workers designed for the commercial industry. We are extremely pleased with the growth and style of these boys. The bulls are easy fleshing with smooth frames, muscle and guts. While some of our bulls specialize in calving ease, we continue to monitor our genetics to ensure that even the high performance bulls are still genetically designed for easier birthing. We have been proud of our bulls in the past but this might just be the best group we’ve raised yet.

Along with continuous studies of Charolais genetics, we continue to raise and invest in high quality females that can raise superior bulls.

Rob was fortunate to have had a few opportunities this past year to visit some of the ranches and enjoy the cattle, the scenery and some of the ranchers themselves. Squaw Valley Ranch / Squair & Chambers families as well as the Andrew boys of Big Smokey Ranch & A-1 Feeders all of Lumby had amazing cow / calf operations at their places. The herd and offspring at Coldstream Ranch were also absolutely fantastic and a pleasure to see. The cattle and calves at the French family ranch in Vernon were something very special. Rob also visited the Miller family of Adams Lake and Pablo Mt. Cattle Co / Her-rick family’s ranch in Williams Lake which were both a treat in itself. After visiting the various ranches Rob’s words to me were that the cows and calves just don’t come any better! We are working on visiting more of you (be forewarned...) and snap a few pictures which, with your consent, we would like to upload onto our website. It’s one thing to raise and enjoy the Charolais bulls but seeing what they can produce with a good solid cow herd, whether it be tan or silver, just makes it all the more worth doing.

Here’s the round up on the exciting line-up of Purebred Registered Charolais genetics we have on offer this year:

Round Up:

Round Up is a smooth solid bull and sound footed with excellent calving ease. This bull is as good as it gets!

Firemaker: Firemaker can easily be summed up as big volume and big performance.

Providence: Providence is a Pilgrim son crossed with the same dam as Deliverance. He offers smooth-ness, lots of muscle and endless performance.

Marshall: Marshall is a high performance bull. Solid and square with a good hair coat.

Freedom: Freedom is very consistent. He provides calving ease, good structure, quiet temperament, soundness and a superb hair coat.

Reality: Reality carries a great genetic package. His offspring are starring in calving ease with phenomenal development and style.

Rally:

Rally is the sire of our red factor bull (lot #266). Rally is rugged and has good length, easy calv-ing, really good testicular development traits and overall performance.

Mr. President: It took us some work to get Mr. President here out of the Debruycker Ranch (USA) but it was well worth the effort. He is a cigar {performance} son who sports a very good cover and fleshes up into a real nice package.

What is an EPD?What is an EPD?What is an EPD?What is an EPD? An EPD (Expected Progeny Differences) is a prediction of future progeny performance for an animal when randomly mated to an infinite number of cattle.

EPD's provide a genetic description for an animal for their traits [i.e. birth weight, weaning weight, milk, yearling weight, etc.]. EPD's are expressed in the actual units of measure for a given trait. As an example, EPD's for traits such as birth weight (BW), weaning weight gain (WW), and yearling weight (YW) are expressed in pounds.

It is important to remember though that EPD's should only be used as a guideline to assist you with your selection as although they are based on reliable criteria they can only provide a likely probability of what the offspring will be like.

2013 Charolais breed average EPD's:

In the Charolais breed if the birth weight (BW) EPD is above +1.9 (the current year’s breed average) he will be more likely to sire calves bigger than the breed average. If below +1.9 he will be more likely sire calves smaller than the breed average.

If the weaning weight (WW) EPD is higher than 41 (the current year’s breed average) he will be more likely to sire calves heavier than breed average at weaning. If below 41 he will be more likely to sire calves that are smaller than breed average at weaning.

A couple of suggested rules....

-Use EPD's only as one of many selection tools -Don't compare them across breeds as each breed has it's own base and breed average(s)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It is very important to note that along with genetics, the size of the fetus and calving ease are also determined by nutrition / feed, the size, condition and age of the cow or heifer at calving time and the length of gestation.

All breeding guarantees and auction practices will be as outlined in the CCA Code of Ethics.

TERMS: Terms of the sale are cash or cheque and is payable in Canadian funds at sale location. No cattle shall be released before settlement is made and sale management reserves the right to demand a certified cheque before releasing any sale cattle. Should any purchaser fail to settle for purchase, management reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage. Either publicly or privately. Any loss arising from such resale, together with keep and all other expenses, shall be payable by the defaulter.

BIDS: Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision will be final.

PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. An insurance broker will be available sale day. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected by the auctioneer at sale time and will take precedence over the printed matter in catalogue.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: Proper Registration or Recordation paper will be provided to the buyer after settlement has been made. CCA will transfer the records.

BREEDING GUARANTEE: Should any bull under the age of fourteen months or over, fail to prove a breeder after being used on cows, known to be breeders, the matter should be reported to the seller within six months of purchase. The seller will then have the right and privilege of six months to prove the bull a breeder. This is providing the bull has been maintained in satisfactory breeding condition.
