The cooperation among the countries of Visegrad Group (V4) – Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia – has been successfully going on for 23 years. Our cooperation, which is founded on genuinely shared values and mutual trust, has been gradually enlarged and deepened over the years. Today it is not merely an important part of the foreign policy „tool kit” of these four states, but has become a factor in the everyday lives of the citizens of the V4 countries.

It is our goal to facilitate, in all walks of life, the expansion of the partnership of V4 countries and to bolster the network of current relations. We are convinced that civil society will be the real beneficiary of this process in the long term. This is why we decided, as the country currently in charge of V4 Presidency, in favor of continuing the „tradition” of the Visegrad Bicycle Race.

The upcoming Visegrad Bicycle Race, as a special event of the Hungarian V4 Presidency, will take place between May 13 and 17, 2014. Professional bikers as well as amateurs can take part in the race. The race, which is officially recognized by the International Cycling Federation (UCI), starts in Poland, passes through Czech Republic and Slovakia, and ends in Hungary. Certain sections of the race are open to amateur bikers as well, and family programs will also be offered on the sidelines of the event. The competitors will pass by several tourist sights on their way through the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

I should express my thanks to the Czech, Polish, Slovak and Hungarian cycling federations for preparing and organizing the race, which serves as a good example for the power of V4 cooperation. Moreover, the consultations related to the Visegrad Bicycle Race have demonstrated again that the V4 cooperation, in addition to bolstering multilateral relations among the Visegrad countries, facilitates bilateral relations as well. The event could not have been prepared and organized without the generous support of the International Visegrad Fund.

We must make the public aware that the Visegrad Group has gained recognition and authority around the world, and that the role and responsibility of V4 countries has been increasing. We hope that such joint events, like the V4 Bicycle Race, will bring the four nations even closer to each other, because our region can only become stronger and more competitive through the joining of our forces.

Budapest, April 29, 2014. János Martonyi Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary

Patron of the V4 Bicycle Race

VISEGRAD 4 BICYCLE RACE

I am glad to offer my patronage to the Polish stage of the 2nd Visegrad Bicycle Race. The race, initiated by me last year during the Polish presidency of the Visegrad Group, has since become a fixture on the sporting calendar in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. This new edition of the race helps bring the Visegrad Group nations ever closer together and strengthen the sense of Central European awareness. We share values, history, and a sense of common heritage. This year we are proud to remind the world about the successful liberation of our countries from Soviet domination a quarter of a century ago. This anniversary highlights the value the people of our region place on freedom, and their determination to uphold this freedom in everyday life.We want to shape Europe in line with our legitimate ambitions, and show how much we have to offer. The Central European region represented by the four countries of the Visegrad Group is undoubtedly a success story, which found its crowning achieve-ment and springboard for the future in our countries’ membership in the European Union. Together, we represent a strong and credible voice of more than64 million Europeans – a voice well heard when taking decisions that affect the continent as a whole. Hosting a road racing event in a region with great cycling traditions will allow us to reinvigorate people-to-people contacts across state borders and beyond official ceremonies. Without a doubt, sporting emotions will make it easier to build a community spirit.I am happy that the city of Wrocław will extend its hospitality to cyclists and fans by hosting the closing stage of the Race in Poland. My thanks go out to the organisers — the Polish Cycling Federation, the local authorities of Lower Silesia, and the generous sponsors — for setting up attractive events that will accompany this year’s Race.I wish the athletes the best of luck in a friendly competition, and the fans an unforgettable time cheering on the athletes.

We live turbulent times abundant with groundbreaking changes, new challenges and the ever altering security environment. Today, more than ever before, we need sturdy supports, high-end mechanisms and a dynamic drive forward. It fills me with pride that these attributes are native as much to our V4 cooperation in general as to its specific outputs such as the Visegrad Bicycle Race. I am convinced that the idea behind the race – to interconnect our four countries using dynamics, healthy competition and human potential – deserves our attention and needs to be cultivated. By no coincidence have we decided to link the start of this year s V4 race to the GLOBSEC security conference: we see it as a symbol that in times of crisis and threats to international security it is crucial to foster cohesion, understanding and cooperation among nations and people. May the best racer win: but win fair, decently and abiding by the rules!

Let me thank the Hungarian Visegrad 4 Presidency for initiating and organizing the 2nd series of the Visegrad Bicycle Race in our countries. Riding a bicycle is not popular just as a sport activity but it appears to be a welcome metaphor for the process of European integration. In a year of a crucial European parliamentarian election is therefore very apt to cycle through our countries which, moreover, commemorate this year 10th anniversary of their accession to the EU.I welcome the idea of the race as a major common sport and tourist promotion event of Visegrad countries and appreciate the new concept of the race proceeding in four national stages in touristic interesting regions. I gladly accept the possibility to promote some less known places of natural and historical interest in the Visegrad region during the Visegrad Bicycle Race. I am convinced, that the race in all of our four countries will show the real Visegrad spirit and cooperation. Let me wish good luck to all organizational teams and sportsmen!
