LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

As my time as Chair of the Arts Club Board draws to a close, it is nice to reflect on the excitement and success of our 2016/2017 season. We were wonderfully supported at the box office, which has allowed us to invest in our people and our future! Angels in America has inspired me to read the entire script to more fully capture Tony Kushner’s powerful work. In February 2017, Bill Millerd, our long-serving Artistic Managing Director, announced he would be retiring after 45 years with the Arts Club. Bill has been such an important part of our success. We will be honouring his contribution to the Arts Club with a tribute performance night in early March 2018 and a campaign to create the $1 million Bill Millerd Artist Fund. In 2017, the Board embarked on a search process to attract a new Artistic Director and Ashlie Corcoran was selected. Ashlie is returning home, as she spent her early childhood in the Lower Mainland and has family in British Columbia. During the year, we initiated plans to upgrade and modernize the Backstage Lounge and upper lobby

on Granville Island with a different menu and decor which we know will appeal to our patrons. We are so very thankful for the loyal support of all of our patrons, who purchase tickets, and our donors, who support us philanthropically. More than 250,000 people attended Arts Club performances last season and many of them also made donations. What a show of support! We are also particularly grateful for the special support provided from the three levels of government, and the corporate community. We have seen stronger support from the corporate community as the allure of live theatre for client and staff events has taken hold. I look forward to sharing our love of theatre and the positive impact that it creates.

As I write this, I am in the midst of my final season at the Arts Club Theatre Company and my gratitude to all who have been on the journey with me over the last 45 years is enormous. In reflecting on my penultimate season, I can point to several highlights, including the award-winning production of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, directed by Kim Collier and featuring an outstanding performance by Damien Atkins. Another highlight was the premiere of The Piano Teacher, by Dorothy Dittrich, staged at the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre as part of our second season at that new stage. Dorothy was honoured with a Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for her writing. We produced three other premieres: The Day Before Christmas, by Stacey Kaser and Alison Kelly, at the Goldcorp Stage; The Men in White, by Anosh Irani; and Moms the Word 3: Nest ½ Empty, which filled the Granville Island Stage for six raucous weeks in the spring of 2017. I am proud of having established our commissioning program, largely funded through the generosity of Stan and Kathy Hamilton, as well as our continued practice of premiering work from the strong playwriting community in this province. I would not be able to do my job without the support of key members of the Arts Club’s team, starting with the major players in the Artistic and Production departments: Director of Production Stephan Baeuml, Artist Liaison Stephanie Hargreaves, Literary Manager Rachel Ditor, and

Resident Designer Ted Roberts. These individuals have worked with me for many years, assisting in bringing to the stage many memorable productions. I am also grateful for the expertise of the four Technical Directors Craig Fulker, Jack Holmes, Ace Martens, Jayson McLean and their colleagues, who were a major part of the season. Directors Valerie Easton, Stephen Drover, Dean Paul Gibson, Chelsea Haberlin, Wayne Harrison, John Murphy, Yvette Nolan, and Sarah Rodgers, as well as the incredible slate of set, costume, lighting, sound designers, and of course the many actors who graced our three stages and on tour. Finally, thanks to the team that runs the company on the administration side: Executive Director Peter Cathie White, Director of Finance Valerie Prodanuk, Director of Development Kathy MacKenzie, Director of Marketing Bryan Woo, as well as the hard-working Board of Directors under Chair Bruce Flexman. Making theatre is a joy for me and appreciation from our subscribers, donors, and patrons, sustained me throughout the season. Thank you all for the support.

Our 2016/2017 season was a highly successful one on several counts. We staged 19 productions on our three stages, including the Jessie Award–winner for outstanding production Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, toured three shows across British Columbia, and successfully staged our second season at the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre. One production was a four-night concert with Brent Carver. This was especially thrilling for me, having sat in the front row during the previews of Kiss of the Spider Woman in London in 1992 and being transformed by Brent’s amazing performance in that show (a role for which he went on to win the Best Actor Tony Award). It was great to have him back at the Arts Club once more. Our new play development program saw four productions celebrate world premieres in our theatres: The Day Before Christmas, by Stacey Kaser and Alison Kelly; The Men in White, by Anosh Irani; the Jessie Award–winner for outstanding original script The Piano Teacher, by Dorothy Dittrich, and the return of the Mom’s the Word Collective in Mom’s the Word 3: Nest ½ Empty. That last show held over for 24 extra performances and became our most-seen first production of a new play ever! So hats off to all the Moms: Jill Daum, Alison Kelly, Robin Nichol, Barbara Pollard, and Deborah Williams. It was a truly exceptional year for new plays. It was also a season that saw some amazing growth in our education initiatives. With the second year of our Digital LEAP program, we reached students across the province and helped young people, who do not have access to programs in the Lower Mainland, to find their creative voices. We also launched a new 32-week initiative called Creative Teens Theatre, which culminated in a performance of a self-devised piece of theatre

written and performed by the students involved. It was highly moving, exceptionally staged and performed, and really spoke to the positive effect that theatre and theatrical work has on our youth. It was one of the highlights of this season and I thank all our funders and donors who make this important work possible. So a huge thank-you to our incredible team at the Arts Club for helping make the 2016/2017 season one of our best: from our artists and production staff who fill our stages with art, to our administrative staff, including marketing, development, box office, front-of-house, and bar, who ensure a strong future for our company, to our incredible volunteers, without whom we couldn’t do what we do, and to our board (and Board Chair Bruce Flexman) who generously give of their time and expertise to the betterment of this company. And thank-you to Bill Millerd. For nearly 15 years I have learned and grown from my proximity to you and I am truly grateful for all you have done for me, for the Arts Club, and for Canadian theatre. Finally, I’d like to thank all of those who support us: from our government, foundation, and corporate funders, to our subscribers, and our donors whose loyalty and charitable contributions mean so much to the artistic health of the company and this community. The Arts Club could not be the exceptional organization it is without your support.

THE JESSIE AWARDS

The annual Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards celebrate and promote the outstanding achievements of the Vancouver professional theatre community.

Throughout the theatre season, an independent jury attends theatre productions in Vancouver. At the end of the season, juries vote on shows in 28 categories. The winners are announced at an awards ceremony in June.

The 35th annual Jessie Awards were held on Monday, June 26, 2017, at the Commodore Ballroom.

The Arts Club Theatre Company received the most nominations in the Large Theatre category. Eight productions were nominated for a total of 24 individual nominations.

NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT

Last season, play development was as busy as ever with plays being commissioned, workshopped, and produced throughout the year. In order to premiere two to four high-calibre plays every season, we must have between six and nine plays in development at any given time. Many of those plays are featured in our annual public reading series, ReACT. ReACT 2016 featured Thanks for Giving by Kevin Loring, along with many others. Every season, thanks to the Silver Commissions program generously supported by Kathy and Stan Hamilton and Bonnie Mah, we also commission two new plays, our most recent being Jenn Griffin’s House and Home and a new holiday play by Marcus Youssef. As well as developing new work, our literary office also supports the creative teams behind previously produced plays by providing production dramaturgy research, most notably for Angels in America.

In production for the 2016/2017 season, we had four new plays: the Christmas hit The Day Before Christmas, the return of the Mom’s the Word Collective with Mom’s the Word 3: Nest 1/2 Empty, the provocative The Men in White by Anosh Irani, and the Jessie Award–winner for best new play, The Piano Teacher by Dorothy Dittrich. Our play development program is run by literary manager/dramaturg Rachel Ditor and literary assistant Veronique West, with the support of UBC dramaturgy intern Gavan Cheema.

Why is it important to support new works?

KH: A playwright’s job is writing. It’s not finding work at other organizations to pay the bills. And if they have support writing in those early days, and in those days when they might not have that kind of support, they can do their job.

SH: As we became involved in the first four commissions, we got to meet the playwrights and that really reinforced the challenges they face. While we don’t provide their entire income for the year by any means, what we have done is given them a few extra hours to spend on moving their new plays along as rapidly as possible. We got to know every one of them and we saw how creative they were and it impressed us. If we could help enable them to contribute just a little more time, it was a worthwhile investment. I think the community at large has a lot to gain from this, and the Arts Club has demonstrated their commitment to making these things work.

What is the impact of the Silver Commissions Project?

KH: I think it does several things. It recognizes the legitimacy of theatre, in the city and the country. It confirms again the Arts Club’s role in supporting their colleagues all across the theatre spectrum. And it gives audiences a chance to see new work through its development. Ordinary people can make a difference by supporting something like this. They can make a difference to their community and to the theatre that they love. And you know also, the theatre is good for the soul.

SH: I think there’s another aspect to it as well. Commissions actually honour the individual playwrights. The Arts Club is saying we have selected you from a large number of playwrights and we have elected to support you through Silver Commissioning. I think it’s important that the playwrights understand we appreciate what they do, and if there’s a chance to recognize them for their work, I think that’s a very good cause.

How can people get involved?

SH: We hope it sets an example to other patrons, other subscribers, and other members of the community, that selecting a cause and working with it can have a very substantial impact. Certainly the personal satisfaction we get out of it, I think, is available to many donors through many other programs. The programs for youth, the community outreach programs, and all the steps through to ReACT. We certainly encourage the many friends and colleagues we’ve made at the Arts Club to continue their contributions and support for these programs. We know it’s vital, and that the box office isn’t going to provide the money to do all of these things. We need the support of our programs, and we’re proud to be part of it.

SPOTLIGHT ON DIGITAL LEAP

In 2015, the Arts Club debuted Digital LEAP, a program that provides theatre education to rural areas of British Columbia. As an outreach component of the Arts Club’s LEAP Playwriting Intensive, Digital LEAP engages directly with youth ages

16 to 19 and offers online instruction via the internet and streaming technology.

Jenessa Galbraith participated in Digital LEAP in 2016. Her experience is highlighted below.

Where in B.C. are you from and what year did you participate in Digital LEAP?

I am from Abbotsford, British Columbia. I graduated in 2016 from Trinity Western University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Program. I participated in Digital LEAP last year (2016/2017).

Why did you participate in Digital LEAP?

I thought that it would be an extraordinary opportunity for me, as a budding writer, to write a play. I didn’t realize it at the time but I was about to embark on the journey of writing my first full-length play (not required via the program) and doing LEAP gave me the tools and mentorship to reach that point.

Why are programs like Digital LEAP important?

LEAP gives emerging writers the opportunity to write a play. There is a goal, something everyone in the group is working towards, so it gives you the motivation to put your writing at the forefront. Digital LEAP has the added bonus of being able to reach people all over British Columbia, so no one is discounted simply because of where they live geographically. Digital LEAP gives more of an equal opportunity to people from all over B.C., and hopefully those writers will be able to contribute their work to their own communities, making the impact of Digital LEAP greater than just Vancouver.

Can you tell me about your favourite part of Digital LEAP? Do you have a favourite memory from your experience?

I was lucky enough (being from Abbotsford) to get to attend the Digital LEAP reading live at the Arts Club. My fellow writers attended it on screens (such a benefit of technology today) and each of us got to show our work to the head staff at the Arts Club, as well as to our friends and family who attended through the conference call. It was an incredible thing to have an audience for these plays that we had put our heart and soul into.

What is your biggest takeaway from participating in a program like this?

Our director, Shawn Macdonald, was so helpful in framing how we gave each other critiques. We took away judgement words such as “I liked this scene” or “that sucked” or “that was awesome” as those may boost or cut someone’s pride, but really offers nothing useful for the work itself. Instead we discussed things in our plays that felt “clear” or “unclear” and we were able to form discussions on what each writer was aiming to convey to the audience. I think the fun and also most useful part of the program, is hearing other people read your work. It’s one thing to write your characters, and hear them talking in your head. It’s quite another to have someone else, with no context other than what’s on the page, read your characters. It’s so helpful in figuring out what definitely isn’t translating, and what else is really working how you want it to.

Live theatre can change the way we see the world. As a donor, making theatre accessible to young people is the greatest gift that I can impart. It is my hope that the arts can challenge young people to grow and broaden their horizons just as early access to theatre broadened mine.”

[The Arts Club has] given a home to theatre. I think that the theatre has always wanted to do nothing but the best and to nurture the people that work here, not just the actors, but everybody who works at the theatre. The Arts Club has a quality that other places don’t. Partially, it’s the people that are here and have brought that forward more than you would expect otherwise.”

— The late Anne Terriss, Arts Club subscriber and donor

I donate to keep our theatre alive, vibrant, and exciting for new theatre-goers. I was pleased to see a completely new crowd of people at the last performance I attended. A community should have cultural outlets, art galleries, performance spaces—places and things to inspire.”
