Does mind mapping help to enhance scanning skills for reading comprehension?
This research aims to enhance scanning skills for reading comprehension through the use of mind mapping technique.
RESEARCH AIM

• To get pupils familiar with the use of mind mapping in English lessons
Presentation Stage
• Teacher draws the mind map on the board along with pupils
• To show the basic steps in drawing mind map
Practice Stage
• Pupils draw their own mind maps by scanning for main ideas and supporting details in the text
• To assess their comprehension of the text read

FINDINGS
• Does mind mapping help to enhance scanning skills for reading comprehension?
INTERVIEW OBSERVATION DOCUMENT ANALYSIS
Respondents commented that the use of mind mapping managed to help them to enhance their reading comprehension as• it was simple and
easy to create (R1);
• easier to understand the text (R2); and
• it was also easier to remember the content of the text (R3).
The observer claimed that the pupils• managed to
conclude and summarize the text read by creating mind maps as the products of their understanding
• the pupils’ learning became easier as they knew the steps of processing the information obtained.
Teacher reflected that• the pupils
managed to answer the comprehension questions accurately after mind mapping drawing activity
• by drawing the mind map regularly, the pupils will be able to improve their ability in organizing and structuring the content of the text
IMPLICATIONS
PupilsHelp pupils to enhance their reading comprehension as reading is a crucial living skills
Teacher
Using mind mapping technique as one of the way to attract pupils’ attention, hence motivate pupils to learn
Future Research
Applying this intervention continuously with some adaptation so it will not be monotonous. The use of other reading techniques (skimming, inference, predict, drawing conclusion) to enhance reading comprehension
