By way of group work, views were sought on a range of areas including the valued features of both schools, key aspects of the schools which need to be retained and enhanced, and the areas of each school which require improvement. Peter emphasised that each school was moving into this exercise from a position of strength and Paul reinforced the notion that a key consideration was the long term sustainability of Marist Education in Adelaide. The feedback was very positive, constructively critical in a few areas and raised a number of questions for the Steering Committee to consider. From my observation it is very apparent that each school does well in most areas and that their specific contexts of Boys Middle Schooling and Co-educational Senior Schooling are highly regarded and must be retained and further enhanced. Of note is that a number of the initiatives developed this year which has brought the two schools (and Marymount College is involved as well) together to work on core projects around curriculum alignment and respectful, relationship-building dialogue is strongly encouraged and supported. Understandably, a number of parents/carers were unable to attend the forum due to previous commitments. Quite a number of these people have accepted the invitation in the previous newsletter to make a submission in writing to the Steering Committee. This can be done via [email protected] and these will be forwarded.

Volume 40 Term 1 Issue 5 Wednesday 2nd April 2014

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students, Staff and Friends of the College,

Sacred Heart College Futures Steering Committee Consultations

Across the day on Monday (24/3/14) of last week a range of consultations occurred in regard to the

Futures Steering Committee. Led by Peter White (Chairperson) and Paul Herrick (Southern Regional

Director of Marist Schools Australia), six individual sessions were held across the day. The groups

consulted from each of the schools were the College Executives, College Staffs, College Councils and

concluded with a Parent Forum in the evening.

The focus of the day was to clarify, in a personal manner, the purpose and process being undertaken.

Peter spoke to the process, context and members of the Steering Committee and Paul addressed the

'Terms of Reference' (previously published in Newsletter 3, 27/2/14). Both spoke to the integrity of the

process and the intention to make a well-considered recommendation to Br Michael Green FMS,

Director of Marist Schools Australia by June 30, 2014.

By way of group work, views were sought on a range of areas including the valued features of both

schools, key aspects of the schools which need to be retained and enhanced, and the areas of each

school which require improvement. Peter emphasised that each school was moving into this exercise

from a position of strength and Paul reinforced the notion that a key consideration was the long term

sustainability of Marist Education in Adelaide.

The feedback was very positive, constructively critical in a few areas and raised a number of questions

for the Steering Committee to consider. From my observation it is very apparent that each school does

well in most areas and that their specific contexts of Boys Middle Schooling and Co-educational Senior

Schooling are highly regarded and must be retained and further enhanced. Of note is that a number of

the initiatives developed this year which has brought the two schools (and Marymount College is

involved as well) together to work on core projects around curriculum alignment and respectful,

relationship-building dialogue is strongly encouraged and supported.

Understandably, a number of parents/carers were unable to attend the forum due to previous

commitments. Quite a number of these people have accepted the invitation in the previous newsletter

to make a submission in writing to the Steering Committee. This can be done via

[email protected] and these will be forwarded.

The involvement of the parents, staff, Councils, Peter White and

Paul Herrick is greatly appreciated. It is very evident that we are

hopeful that regardless of the final recommendation we all want

'Sacred Heart' to be in the best possible position it can be moving

into the future.

Parent Teacher Interviews

A range of Parent Teacher interviews are occurring across the last

two weeks of term. These are very important discussions about our

students and their progress thus far in 2014. Logistically it is a

massive undertaking but thanks to some smart software on-line

bookings make the process reasonably smooth.

A new initiative was conducted last Friday in response to a request

from the SHC Boarding Parents Committee by way of Friday

afternoon interviews for our families based in regional South

Australia. The afternoon was well attended with the likelihood of

this being conducted each Semester.

The partnership between the home and the school in support of our

students is critical in assisting them achieve their potential and to

maximise the many opportunities of their senior schooling. My

sincere thanks to the staff and parents/carers who commit

themselves to these interviews such that each student and their

parents/carers has the opportunity to receive personalised feedback

and advice for the terms ahead.

Regards,

Steve Byrne Principal

Scripture Reflection

Gospel (Sunday 2 March 2014: Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time): Jn 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38

As Jesus went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. He spat on the ground,

made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blind man and said to him, ‘Go

and wash in the Pool of Siloam’ (a name that means ‘sent’). So the blind man went off and washed

himself, and came away with his sight restored.

His neighbours and people who earlier had seen him begging said, ‘Isn’t this the man who used to sit

and beg?’ Some said, ‘Yes, it is the same one.’ Others said, ‘No, he only looks like him.’ The man himself

said, ‘I am the man.’

They brought the man who had been blind to the Pharisees. It had been a sabbath day when Jesus made

the paste and opened the man’s eyes, so when the Pharisees asked him how he had come to see, he said,

‘He put a paste on my eyes, and I washed, and I can see.’ Then some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man

cannot be from God: he does not keep the sabbath.’ Others said, ‘How could a sinner produce signs like

this?’ And there was disagreement among them. So they spoke to the blind man again, ‘What have you

to say about him yourself, now that he has opened your eyes?’ ‘He is a prophet’ replied the man.

‘Are you trying to teach us,’ they replied ‘and you a sinner through and through, since you were born!’

And they drove him away.

Jesus heard they had driven him away, and when he found him he said to him, ‘Do you believe in the

Son of Man?’ ‘Sir,’ the man replied ‘tell me who he is so that I may believe in him.’ Jesus said, ‘You are

looking at him; he is speaking to you.’ The man said, ‘Lord, I believe’, and worshipped him.

* * *

Humans see and judge by appearances, but God looks into the heart, and there finds the real person. God’s

standards are not superficial, as are so many of the standards of the world. It is not age, beauty or physical

strength that is important; it is not social position or religious role that is preferred. God chooses whom God

chooses. God saw in David, the insignificant shepherd, the potential for being the chief shepherd of his people. The

man who was born blind became the one through whom others would see the mighty works of God. Yet, neither

young David nor the man in the gospel made the initial step; each simply responded with openness to God’s choice

of him.

By what criteria do we judge others? Do we consider some people too insignificant for greatness? Are we overly

concerned with status? Do we categorise people according to the disease or physical limitation that they must

endure? Do we sometimes blame them for their disability? Do our eyes perceive life in accord with the standards of

a materialistic, body-orientated, pleasure-seeking society? Or do we look into the other’s heart, as God does?

With thanks to Dianne Bergant © for the above reflection.

whole school fundraising celebration

Tuesday 13 May 2014

The important purpose of the day is to raise money for our Marist Projects in India, the Philippines and Fiji. This is the major fundraiser for the Immersion Team, and provides the College with a great sense of community. Details are contained in the letter from Daniel Head dated 1 April 2014, but in short:

1. Every student should attempt to raise a minimum of $20! This is not intended to be a charge on parents. Students should be proactive in seeking sponsorship.

2. We assemble on the Main Oval and then walk via the beach to Angus Neill Reserve at Seacliff where we will have a lunch.

3. After that students will walk back to school. The coaster bus will return those students who are not able to complete the return walk.

There will be the prize of a pizza lunch for the Homeroom which raises the most money and prizes for the top two individuals who raise the most money.

WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO DO:

Raise a minimum of $20 through sponsorship

Return Notice of Excursion Form to your Homeroom teacher asap.

Individual Education Plans Subject teachers are in the process of writing Individual

Education Plans (IEP’s) for students with disability or those

who have a diagnosed learning difficulty. In some instances,

teachers will also complete an IEP for students who experience

general difficulties in a specific subject.

An IEP ensures that a teacher is meeting the needs, strengths

and interests of all students and providing equity of access to

the curriculum. An IEP not only identifies the learning goals

for individual students but also records any adjustments made

by the teacher in relation to curriculum, instruction and /or

environment so that the student can access the teaching and

learning program. “An adjustment is a measure or action taken to

assist a student with disability to participate in education….on the

same basis as other students” (Student Diversity and the

Australian Curriculum 2013, www.acara.edu.au). The level of

adjustment can vary considerably - ranging from no

adjustments at this time to supplementary, significant or

extensive.

An important aspect of the IEP process is consultation with the

parents/carers and the student. Teachers are more than happy

to discuss the needs of individual students and any adjustments

currently being made. I encourage you to email or phone

subject teachers if you have any concerns and suggest that

Parent Teacher Interviews would be an ideal time to chat about

adjustments.

Please feel free to contact me for further clarification.

SHCS STUDENT

ABSENCE/LATE ARRIVAL

PROCEDURE All parents/caregivers of students

attending SHCS must notify the College

absentee line 8350 2594, when a student

will be absent from school or is arriving

late to school. The absentee line is a

recorded message service and is available

24 hours, 7 days a week to take calls

regarding your child’s absence/late arrival

to school. Please call this number before

9.45am on the day of a student absence.

For multiple days absent please give dates

and the reason.

If your son/daughter will be arriving late

to school, please call the absentee line and

leave details on the message recording- i.e.

name, reason for late arrival and an

estimated time of arrival. Students are to

then sign in at the Front Office when they

arrive.

This service can also be used to advise the

College of your daughter/son’s early

departure for an appointment or family

event. Otherwise please write a note of

explanation in their diary. In either case

students must sign out at Front Office

before leaving College grounds.

If your son/daughter is unwell at school,

we would prefer that they did not contact

parents in the first instance. Rather they

should attend the Health Care Centre to

see the nurse who will contact you if the

student needs to go home.

For any further enquiries, please call

Reception: 8294 2988

Absentee Line: 8350 2594

please call before 9.45am

Your cooperation in these matters will be

greatly appreciated by College staff and

will assist us in maintaining accurate

attendance records.

Entertainment Books I am selling Entertainment books again this year as a fundraiser

for Remar social justice projects. The Entertainment Book costs

$65 and is full of discount vouchers and other offers for local

restaurants, hotels and other activities.

This year, you have the choice of purchasing the traditional

Entertainment Book Membership with gold card and vouchers

OR the new Entertainment Digital Membership (for your

Apple or Android device). The Digital Membership allows you

to show your phone to redeem offers as well as search for

businesses and keep track of your savings.

For more information, click on this link:

http://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/about/Tell-me-

More/Adelaide

Should you wish to purchase an Entertainment Book or Digital

Membership, you can order and pay online using your credit

card, just click on this link:

https://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/1601s50

and I'll automatically be informed of your purchase. Should

you purchase the book, you can choose to collect it from

College Reception or to have it sent home with your

son/daughter. Books will be available from Thursday April 10.

There are limited numbers of bonus vouchers available for

people who pre-purchase. Please be aware that pickup/delivery

will not be available during the school holidays.

You can start using the offers as soon as you receive your

book/membership (offers expire June 1 2015).

Each book raises $13 for Remar to use for social justice projects -

so it's a great cause. The books/memberships also "pay for

themselves" very quickly when used for movie vouchers,

dining offers, travel accommodation or just by using them for

"everyday" things like discounted supermarket shopping

vouchers.

Many thanks for your support,

Mrs Karen Bailey

Stage 1 Dance Excursion On Wednesday 19th March the Stage 1 Dance students attended the

‘Leaps and Bounds’ Dance Day, held at The Festival Centre. This day

is for SACE dance students from around the state to come together

for workshops, presentations and dance classes. The morning kicked

off with a performance piece by AC Arts’ 2nd Year Dance students,

which was an athletic piece that showed the diversity of the dancers

who had chosen Dance as their future pathway. Our students then

spent the rest of the day in classes they had chosen, including, Break

dancing, hip hop, contemporary, musical theatre choreography,

dance on film, and composition. It was such an inspiring day, and an

opportunity to learn from some of Adelaide’s leading dance

professionals, as well as a chance to actually dance on the many

stages around Festival Centre! Our Sacred Heart dancers were

incredibly focussed in all their groups and personally I couldn’t have

been more proud of them! Some of the students’ feedback included…

“The day was amazing, I was able to show my skills in other genres for the

whole day.”

“I now feel inspired to create my own dances, in a new style”

“I learned really cool dance moves in a short amount of time, and made new

friends!”

A big thank you also to Ms Bogatec for joining us on the day!

SHC Centenary Celebration

and Fundraiser SATURDAY, 11 OCTOBER 2014 To commemorate 100 years since the Marist

Brothers located Sacred Heart College at

Paringa Hall, the SHC community (led by the

SHC Foundation) is planning a major

fundraising event. The College plans to

memorialise this significant historical milestone

with a major refurbishment of the College

Science Laboratory estimated to cost around

$500,000. This is a much needed capital project

for the College to allow it to provide students

with modern and relevant science teaching

facilities. Subject to funding, it is hoped the

work will commence as early as November

2014.

The SHC Community comprising parents,

friends and old collegians, would like to make a

major contribution of funds towards that

refurbishment. We are therefore planning an

evening cocktail function and auction utilising

the beautiful rooms at Paringa Hall and the

facilities in the De Bourg Performing Arts

Centre on Saturday evening, 11 October 2014.

We are hoping to have 400 guests (parents,

friends and old collegians) at this event with

our target to raise $100,000 to contribute to the

science laboratory project.

We are seeking support for the SHC

Foundation volunteer base with a group of

motivated and interested team of parents,

ideally of 2014 year 9 and year 10 students to

form a management committee to plan and

execute this major event. The administration

support of the SHC Foundation will be

available to help the committee.

So please put 11 October 2014 in your diary and

consider volunteering for this committee to

make a material difference for your children at

SHC.

If you are interested, please register your

details with Jane Ping at

SACE Art Show 2014 As part of the final moderation process for Year 12 Visual Arts, Art

and Design work is selected to be showcased in the SACE Art Show

the following year.

Four students from Sacred Heart College 2013 whose work was

selected and is now on display in the Art Show includes Art works by

Loren Orsillo (Installation; painting, drawings, sculpture and found

object) Daniel Spalding (photography and mixed media) and Graphic

Design presentations by Rachel Salvati and Billy Byrne.

The exhibition in the Light Square Gallery, Adelaide College of the

Arts, TAFE SA was officially opened on Friday evening and the

students and members of their families were all present at the event.

A variety of encouragement awards are presented at the event and

Daniel was a very worthy recipient of the Award for Photography.

The Exhibition is open to the public until Wednesday 30th April and

provides an excellent opportunity for students, families and those

interested in the Visual Arts to appreciate the creative talent, skills

and imagination of young Art and Design students from Sacred

Heart College and from school communities across South Australia.
