It’s true. There are certain well-known secrets within the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) industry that could cost you thousands of dollars when choosing a new furnace or air conditioner for your home. Keep reading to learn what they are.

When you get a quote for a new furnace or air conditioner, one of the factors that will determine the price is the size of the equipment, which is measured in “tons” or BTUs. Typically, the larger the house, the largerthe furnace or air conditioner required and the more expensive the unit will be.

Here are the tell-tale signs that you might be making the wrong choice when it comes to sizing:

The contractor did not do a heat or cooling load calculation in your house. If there was no heat or cooling load calculation done they are making a guess, and you are more likely to end-up with the wrong size.

Page 9: WARNING: Don’t make a decision about a new furnace or air ...blog.reliancehomecomfort.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Relianc… · When you get a quote for a new furnace or air

The contractor only asked you whether or not youwere happy with the way your current equipment heats or cools your house. If they used only your answer as the basis for sizing the new equipment, you may be in trouble. Research* has shown that the unit you currently have might be over-sized, which means you may end up (a) overpaying for your unit and (b) stuck with a unit that doesn’t meet its maximum efficiency capabilities.*see http://www.hrai.ca/questions_answers.html

You have two different quotes back from contractors, and they are quoting you different sizes. Only one of the quotes can be right, and how do you know which one it is?

Don’t get stuck with the wrong sized equipment. At RelianceTM, we use the SmartFitTM system to measure each specific home’s energy load requirements.

It involves determining:

• Which direction the house is facing;• The square footage of the insulated walls in your house;• The square footage of the windows in your house;• The number of heating and cooling vents you have in your house; and

Some contractors may quote you wrong sizes

It’s likely that you haven’t bought a furnace for quite some time, so some air conditioner and furnace contractors will show you limited options knowing that you probably don’t understand the options that are available to you.

There’s a very good reason for this - many contractors have relationships with only one equipment manufacturer in order to get discounts on that brand - the more they sell of that particular brand, the more money goes to their bottom line. They might also have incentives from the manufacturers to push certain models, some of which might not be the best choice for your specific situation.

While this might be good for them, it’s not so good for you.

Here are the tell-tale signs that you might be making the wrong choice when it comes to understanding

your options:

Page 15: WARNING: Don’t make a decision about a new furnace or air ...blog.reliancehomecomfort.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Relianc… · When you get a quote for a new furnace or air

The contractor tells you that one brand is better than another. No one brand isnecessarily better than another. The brand acontractor suggests is the best is most likely thebrand they have a relationship with.

They have the manufacturer’s logo on their shirt. This may seem like a small detail to look out for, but it should prompt you to ask whether or not they’ll show you all of your options.

Even if you have the right-sized equipment and the brand and model that’s best for your unique situation, you still aren’t in the clear.

In order for your furnace and air conditioner to function properly, you need to have it installed correctly. If your equipment is improperly installed, it could mean unexpected repair costs and lost energy savings down the road.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is to only compare theequipment cost when it comes to choosing the right contractor. Although the cost

of the unit is important, it ends up being only a fraction of the total cost ofownership. Getting your brand new equipment installed by an inexperienced (or worse,

unqualified) technician can spell trouble for you down the road.

Here are the tell-tale signs that you might be making thewrong choice when it comes to choosing a contractor to install

your new furnace or air conditioner:

Page 22: WARNING: Don’t make a decision about a new furnace or air ...blog.reliancehomecomfort.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Relianc… · When you get a quote for a new furnace or air

The contractor doesn’t have appropriately certified personnel to perform a furnace installation or air conditioner. One thing to look for is the TSSA (Technical Standards and Safety Authority) number on their truck which will tell you they are qualified to install a gas appliance.

Page 23: WARNING: Don’t make a decision about a new furnace or air ...blog.reliancehomecomfort.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Relianc… · When you get a quote for a new furnace or air

The contractor doesn’t offer maintenance and service guarantees. If they aren’t willing to accept the risk of standing behind their work down the road, this should raise some serious red flags.

Even though there have been some incredible advances in technology over the past few years, the reality is that equipment still breaks down. And if you are not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, you could be stuck with a large repair bill.

Of course, every heating and cooling contractor you meet will tell you they will be there for you whenever your equipment fails. But how do you know that they actually will?

Here are some specific steps you can take inorder to ensure that you are working with a companythat will be able to take care of you in the long-run.

The first thing you can do is compare the guarantees that you are getting from different contractors. Some will be better than others. All other things being equal, you’ll want to choose the company with the best guarantees. Remember, the initial cost of the unit is only a fraction of the lifetime operating cost, so these guarantees are critical.

But that’s just the first step.

The best way for you to understand which guarantees you should be demanding from your supplier is to meet with a Reliance Home Comfort Advisor. They will personally walk you through each of the important guarantees you can get from the manufacturer, and which guarantees you can get from a service provider, including Reliance.

Some heating and cooling contractors may be more risky to work with than others.

You’ve finally made it. You’ve jumped through all the hoops and are confident that you’ve got the right size of unit for your home, you’ve got the best mix of performance and value with a brand you’re comfortable with, you’ve got a reputable contractor to install your unit, and you are confident that they will be able to live up to their promises down the road. All that’s left is for you

to get out your cheque book and pay, right?

Wrong.

There are multiple ways for you to pay for your new equipment, and likely only one way that best suits your specific needs.

Picking the right option for you and your family is an important choice, and understanding all of your options is the first step in that process. For instance, did you know that you could rent your equipment for a low monthly rate? Most heating and cooling contractors won’t tell you this because they don’t have the ability to offer you those terms.
