It’s true. There are certain well-known secrets within the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) industry that could cost you thousands of dollars when choosing a new furnace or air conditioner for your home. Keep reading to learn what they are.

FACT:Some heating and cooling contractors may quote you the wrong size.


When you get a quote for a new furnace or air conditioner, one of the factors that will determine the price is the size of the equipment, which is measured in “tons” or BTUs. Typically, the larger the house, the largerthe furnace or air conditioner required and the more expensive the unit will be.

Here are the tell-tale signs that you might be making the wrong choice when it comes to sizing:


The contractor did not do a heat or cooling load calculation in your house. If there was no heat or cooling load calculation done they are making a guess, and you are more likely to end-up with the wrong size.

The contractor only asked you whether or not youwere happy with the way your current equipment heats or cools your house. If they used only your answer as the basis for sizing the new equipment, you may be in trouble. The contractor tells you that one brand is better than another. No one brand isnecessarily better than another. The brand acontractor suggests is the best is most likely thebrand they have a relationship with.

The contractor evades your questions when you ask them to quote on a different brand.

They have the manufacturer’s logo on their shirt. This may seem like a small detail to look out for, but it should prompt you to ask whether or not they’ll show you all of your options.

The contractor doesn’t have appropriately certified personnel to perform a furnace installation or air conditioner. One thing to look for is the TSSA (Technical Standards and Safety Authority) number on their truck which will tell you they are qualified to install a gas appliance.

The contractor doesn’t offer maintenance and service guarantees. If they aren’t willing to accept the risk of standing behind their work down the road, this should raise some serious red flags.

The first thing you can do is compare the guarantees that you are getting from different contractors. Some will be better than others. All other things being equal, you’ll want to choose the company with the best guarantees. Remember, the initial cost of the unit is only a fraction of the lifetime operating cost, so these guarantees are critical.

Picking the right option for you and your family is an important choice, and understanding all of your options is the first step in that process.
