Inspired by the words of Simeon's canticle ("a light to the revelation to the Gentiles"), by the 11 th century in the West the custom had developed of blessing candles on the Feast of the Presentation. The candles were then lit, and a procession took place through the darkened church while the Canticle was sung. Because of this, the feast also became known as Candlemas. Reflecting on the phrase lumen ad revelationem gentium, the Gospel narrative, and the ancient feast of Candlemas, Thomas Merton wrote this poem: The Candlemas Procession Lumen Ad revelationem gentium. Look kindly, Jesus, where we come, New Simeons, to kindle, Each at your infant sacrifice his own life's candle. And when your flame turns into many tongues, See how the One is multiplied, among us, hundreds! And goes among the humble, and consoles our sinful kindred. It is for this we come, And, kneeling, each receive one flame: Ad revelationem gentium. Our lives, like candles, spell this simple symbol: Weep like our bodily life, sweet work of bees, Sweeten the world with your slow sacrifice. And this shall be our praise: That by our glad expense, our Father's will Burned and consumed us for a parable. Nor burn we now with brown and smoky flames, but bright Until our sacrifice is done, (By which not we, but You are known.) Ponder: How is the one flame one and also many? How are we many and also one? How can my life and our parish life be a light of revelation to those who come to us? How can we keep our lights burning brightly? Do: Light a candle and the candle of your life as a simple symbol.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD FEBRUARY 2, 2014

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. . . Candlemas Day (By Regina Siegfried, ASC)

Known originally as the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is an ancient celebration. The Church at Jeru-salem observed the feast as early as the first half of the fourth century. The day celebrates the presentation of Christ in the temple at Jerusalem on the 40th day after His birth the event recounted in the gospel passage from Luke. Inspired by the words of Simeon's canticle ("a light to the revelation to the Gentiles"), by the 11th century in the West the custom had developed of blessing candles on the Feast of the Presentation. The candles were then lit, and a procession took place through the darkened church while the Canticle was sung. Because of this, the feast also became known as Candlemas. Reflecting on the phrase lumen ad revelationem gentium, the Gospel narrative, and the ancient feast of Candlemas, Thomas Merton wrote this poem:

The Candlemas Procession Lumen Ad revelationem gentium.

Do:

Many & One Upcoming Events Did you know that Missouri currently makes it harder than almost any other state to qualify for

Medicaid? Under today’s rules, a single mother of two can’t qualify for basic health care through Medicaid if she makes more than $3,504 per year – just 18% of the poverty line. Did you know that if we don’t expand Medicaid, Missouri hospitals could lose nearly $400 million in funding this year alone, which would force 40 to 50 percent of our state’s rural hospitals to close? Find out more about the impact of not expanding Medicaid coverage at a panel discussion presented by Metropolitan Congregations United on February 9th after Masses in the Annex.

Enjoy a family night on February 15th at 5:30 p.m. at “Chili and a Movie Family Night” in the hall. Bring a pot of chili to share and stay for a movie.

1. What constitutes a family? The understanding of “family” is very broad – includes the nuclear family, blended family, single-parent families, families with same-sex parents, the unmarried (those who choose to live singly, divorced, widows and widowers), men and women in religious life. 2. Some of the theological principles grounding our understanding of family:

The Trinity – family as community of love, like the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the unitive nature of marriage and family.

The Church – the People of God; the universal call to holiness; the priesthood of all believers; the roles of priest, prophet and king.

Sacraments – encounter with Christ at key moments in life; the Church defines seven sacraments (including marriage); every moment in life is sacramental, a moment of encounter with Christ.

Covenant – sacred agreement between God and God’s people, in which both make promises (like the Mt. Sinai covenant); marriage and family are also a sacred agreement between God and his people in which both God and the members of the family make promises.

The role of the laity – Lumen Gentium, #31: “The laity, by their very vocation, seek the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them to the plan of God. They live in the world, that is, in each and in all of the secular professions and occupations. They live in the ordinary circumstances of family and social life, from which the very web of their existence is woven.” They “work for the sanctification of the world from within . . .”

3. The social teaching has tried to overcome centuries of negative thinking about marriage and the family:

That all things spiritual are higher and superior to all things worldly; that everything worldly is tainted by the sin of Adam (especially sexuality). We have a different understanding today.

As a result, the call to religious life is superior to the call to family life, because religious life is inherently “spiritual.” Most religious will tell you they don't see themselves in this way.

4. The goals of family life are the same as the goals of Christian life in general:

Union – of spouses; of all family members; union with God. Faithfulness – to family members; to God. Exclusivity – spouses and family members are committed to each other exclusively; all Christians

should be committed to God exclusively. Love – to love one’s family IS to love God

The principal document on the family: Familiaris Consortio; The Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World (Pope John Paul II, 1981): The tasks of the family are: Task #1: Forming a Community of Persons Task #2: The Transmission of Life Task #3: Participating in the Development of Society Task #4: Sharing in the Life and Mission of the Church

Who is Family? In case you missed Mark Etling's talk on family on January 19th, here are the main points of this component of Catholic social teaching. Although a mere summary misses the lively discussion, it might help to understand some of the Church's teaching on family.
