Dear Parents, Please find below Year 1s second week of planning for you for Summer Term 1. We hope you enjoyed ‘teaching’ your children last week, and found it as rewarding as we do. As a reminder, please make sure you watch Ruth Miskins RWI on youtube each day. ENGLISH Monday LO: To spell Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt5zQ1UO6rE Pause the video on Bob in his spacesuit, explain how he must wear this each day to protect him. Ask, how do you think each part protects him? Model how to spell each noun and verb by writing a list for Bob of things he must do before he leaves his locker. For example: Zip, coat, tighten, belt, put, helmet. Sound button each sound in each word (example below). Children to write key words with sound buttons. Ready: Use keywords modelled by you. Steady: Use their own words that relate to Bob. Go: extend by writing a sentence. Tuesday LO: To write sentences. Pause the video on Bob in his spacesuit again. Look at the words that you wrote yesterday. Get your child to read the words with you, using the sound buttons to help if necessary. Help your child or ask your child to come up with a sentence using one of the words. For example: Zip up coat. Put on trousers and tighten belt. Put on helmet. Ready: Write the sentence for your child but with some of the words missing for them to write and then ask them to copy the full sentence. Steady: Write two sentences independently. Go: extend their sentence For example: Bob needs to put on his helmet to protect his head. Bob needs to tighten his belt to keep his suit on. Wednesd ay LO: To spell Pause the video looking at Bob’s spaceship. Explain that Bob always reads the newspaper on his way to work and today he is looking at the advertisement pages for a new rocket to go to space in. Explain that his rocket is too old and is unlikely to pass its MOST (Ministry of Space Travel) test. He is looking for the best spaceship money can buy and for the best advert. He wants it to be colourful, comfortable and safe. Model drawing a poster/advert for a new rocket with key words around the edge of the picture. Children to create their own advert for a new rocket. Ready: Some words on the advert – support with spelling. Steady: Use words modelled and their own ideas to complete. Go: Include two adjectives per word. For example comfortable, red chairs. Dear Parents,Please find below Year 1s second week of planning for you for Summer Term 1. We hope you enjoyed ‘teaching’ your children last week, and found it as rewarding as we do. As a reminder, please make sure you watch Ruth Miskins RWI on youtube each day.

ENGLISHMonday LO: To spell

Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt5zQ1UO6rEPause the video on Bob in his spacesuit, explain how he must wear this each day to protect him. Ask, how do you think each part protects him? Model how to spell each noun and verb by writing a list for Bob of things he must do before he leaves his locker. For example: Zip, coat, tighten, belt, put, helmet. Sound button each sound in each word (example below).Children to write key words with sound buttons. Ready: Use keywords modelled by you. Steady: Use their own words that relate to Bob. Go: extend by writing a sentence.

Tuesday LO: To write sentences. Pause the video on Bob in his spacesuit again.Look at the words that you wrote yesterday. Get your child to read the words with you, using the sound buttons to help if necessary. Help your child or ask your child to come up with a sentence using one of the words. For example: Zip up coat. Put on trousers and tighten belt. Put on helmet.Ready: Write the sentence for your child but with some of the words missing for them to write and then ask them to copy the full sentence. Steady: Write two sentences independently. Go: extend their sentence For example: Bob needs to put on his helmet to protect his head. Bob needs to tighten his belt to keep his suit on.

Wednesday LO: To spellPause the video looking at Bob’s spaceship.Explain that Bob always reads the newspaper on his way to work and today he is looking at the advertisement pages for a new rocket to go to space in. Big, grey wardrobe.

Thursday LO: To spell Explain that Bob takes a lunch box with him to the moon each day. He always has a sandwich, fruit, drink and cake. Ask your child to pretend that they are Bob and ask them, ‘what would you like in your lunch box’? Write down ideas- be descriptive and imaginative! Sound button the words after. Children write down lunchbox items themselves.Ready: Support, using the modelled list that you have written. Steady: Try to write the words without looking at yours. MATHS

Monday LO: To explore quartersModel halving an amount using loose parts (lego pieces, paper clips, pencils) and then model finding a quarter from that. Draw some 2d shapes that can be quartered (square, rectangle, circle) and model how to split it into quarters. Explain that quarters are 4 equal parts. Hide your example and ask your child to have a go with the same shapes. If you can cut the shapes out and test it by folding then that is great but no problem if not!

Tuesday LO: Find quarter of an amountRecap how to quarter an amount using loose parts.Explain that we can quarter an amount by drawing an amount into 4 boxes – model this by ‘sharing’ 8 dots into 4 boxes (below)

. . . .

. . . .

Ask your child to find quarter of amounts using this new method. GO: Give your child numbers above 20 that can be quartered. STEADY: quarter 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 READY: quarter 4,8,12,16, 20

Wednesday LO: To find quarter of a shapeDraw 3 squares for your child and ask them to show: less than a quarter shaded, exactly a quarter shaded, more than a quarter shaded (some children may need your support and others may be okay to do this independently, do not be worried if your child needs support with this, it’s very tricky. Try folding first)! If you have access to a tablet, laptop or computer, get your child to have a go at finding halves up to 20: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Thursday LO: Find quarter of an amountGet the children to do the same as yesterday and find a quarter of specified amounts (below) using loose parts and then ask them to write the amounts down, for example: a quarter of 12 is 3.GO: quarter 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 STEADY: quarter 4,8,12,16, 20READY: quarter 4, 8, 12, 16

Friday LO: Find quartersUse loose parts (counters/grains of rice or pasta/buttons/pebbles/paper clips etc) to count out an even number and model finding quarter by sharing between 4. Ask your child to do the same with varying amounts. Children to complete activity (below pages) (if you cannot print this – full document below – then just draw some plain rectangles for your child to use).

EXAMPLES: Ready: 4 grids with adult support Steady: Do 4 grids Go: At least 8 grids https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button - halves to 20

TOPIC

MainActivity – make a rocket.

Discuss with your child what a rocket needs to be efficient and safe in travelling to space (wings/point at the top). You will need the resources that you have begun to collect (some form of tube/card or paper to make point and wings/paint/Sellotape or glue).Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vubFmbXsz-c and use this step by step to help your child make their rocket. Improvise as needed- This example is probably quite far fetched in our current environment!

Idea getepic.com – use the login details below to check out the assigned books and much more!

Find other space themed stories (on youtube if you don’t have any – the dinosaur that pooped a planet, aliens love underpants, here we are – Oliver Jeffers, whatever next – Jill Murphy). Can you rewrite the story or list all of the space things that you see in the story.

Make a poster about the solar system, use the internet if you can to help you find out the planets names and any facts.

Draw your own alien Write an acrostic poem for the word ‘rocket’

The lessons are available for 24 hours. Set 1 are initial sounds which most Year 1 children don’t need, however it is really good for letter formation.Set 2 are easier and Set 3 are harder ‘special friends’. You might like to do both of these, or just one. It’s up to you. Younger and older siblings may also like to join in so that could give you a 20 minute tea break (whilst encouraging them to take part if needed!)
