This is defined in the DfE’s 'Keeping Children Safe in Education 2018', the document to which all schools will refer and educate pupils in this maer, as follows: Abuse which is most likely to include, but may not be lim- ited to bullying (including cyberbullying); physical abuse such as hiing, kicking, shaking, biting, hair pulling, or oth- erwise causing physical harm; sexual violence and sexual harassment; sexting (also known as youth produced sexual imagery); and initiation/hazing type violence and rituals. As a school which prides itself on its core values, we wish to prevent all forms of abuse as part of demonstrating compas- sion and respect to one another. In the assemblies, I will be explaining to pupils and students the consequences of these behaviours and from whom they can seek help should they arise. In particular, I will be stressing the impact of verbal abuse, which research has demonstrated can have deep, long- lasting effects (in contrast to a “sticks and stones…” ai- tude), the negative impact that bullying has on both parties and the particular implications of equalities-based bullying. I will also be encouraging pupils and students to report any peer-on-peer abuse that they experience or witness, and I would urge you to do the same by contacting your son’s Head of House, or myself in the Sixth Form. The school’s policy on peer-on-peer abuse can be found in our safeguarding policy, available on the school website, and I would also invite you to contact me should you have any concerns about this maer. Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your partnership in preventing this type of behaviour through conversations with your son/daughter. End of Christmas Term

Dear Parents/Carers,

Over the next week I will be leading assemblies for all year

groups on the subject of peer-on-peer abuse. This is defined

in the DfE’s 'Keeping Children Safe in Education 2018', the

document to which all schools will refer and educate pupils

in this matter, as follows:

Abuse which is most likely to include, but may not be lim-

ited to bullying (including cyberbullying); physical abuse

such as hitting, kicking, shaking, biting, hair pulling, or oth-

erwise causing physical harm; sexual violence and sexual

harassment; sexting (also known as youth produced sexual

imagery); and initiation/hazing type violence and rituals.

As a school which prides itself on its core values, we wish to

prevent all forms of abuse as part of demonstrating compas-

sion and respect to one another. In the assemblies, I will be

explaining to pupils and students the consequences of these

behaviours and from whom they can seek help should they

arise.

In particular, I will be stressing the impact of verbal abuse,

which research has demonstrated can have deep, long-

lasting effects (in contrast to a “sticks and stones…” atti-

tude), the negative impact that bullying has on both parties

and the particular implications of equalities-based bullying.

I will also be encouraging pupils and students to report any

peer-on-peer abuse that they experience or witness, and I

would urge you to do the same by contacting your son’s

Head of House, or myself in the Sixth Form.

The school’s policy on peer-on-peer abuse can be found in

our safeguarding policy, available on the school website,

and I would also invite you to contact me should you have

any concerns about this matter.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your

partnership in preventing this type of behaviour through

conversations with your son/daughter. To coin the NSPCC

phrase, "Peer-on-peer abuse must stop. FULL STOP”.

Theme of the Week

This week’s theme of the week is Iceland's banned Christ-

mas advert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdpspllWI2o

Originally produced by Greenpeace to highlight the glob-

al impact of palm oil production, and show that simple

products such as our shampoo, crisps & chocolate which

contain palm oil are fuelling tropical countries to grow as

much palm oil as possible (as it's an easy to grow high

yield crop)

This has been linked to unscrupulous developers remov-

ing large swathes of natural rainforest to plant palm oil

trees which is destroying the natural habitat for animals

such as the Orangutans and Sumatran Tigers. Over

100,000 Orangutans have been killed in the quest for palm

oil production.

Thank you.

Word of the Week

Momentary

An adjective to describe

= lasting for a very short time

= brief

Use it:

A momentary lapse of concentration ended up costing

him his driver’s licence.

She was unable to conceal a telling momentary hesita-

tion when asked her opinion on the matter.

After a momentary loss of consciousness, she was able

to sit upright again and seek assistance.

The crowd let out a momentary groan before cheering

the comedian on.

Pronounce it

Can either be pronounced:

Mo ment ary or Mo men tree

Literacy

Reader of the week

Congratulations to Amos (7SH6) who is our reader of the

week. To date, Amos has read over half a million words,

quizzing on eight books and earning 77 points for Shake-

speare. Great work!

Millionaire of the Week

Finley (7CH3) is our latest word millionaire, reading well

over a million words. Well done Finley – your name is now

up on the millionaire’s board in the library!

Book Recommendation

The Hobbit is the unforgettable story of Bilbo, a peace-loving

hobbit, who embarks on a strange

and magical adventure.

Bilbo Baggins enjoys a quiet and con-

tented life, with no desire to travel

far from the comforts of home; then

one day the wizard Gandalf and a

band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly

and enlist his services – as a burglar

– on a dangerous expedition to raid the treasure-hoard of

Smaug the dragon. Bilbo’s life is never to be the same again.

Seldom has any book been so widely read and loved as J. R.R. Tol-

kien’s classic tale, ‘The Hobbit’. Since its first publication in 1937 it

has remained in print to delight each new generation of readers all

over the world, and its hero, Bilbo Baggins, has taken his place

among the ranks of the immortals of fiction.

Christmas Ideas

Don’t forget to have a look at www.arbookfinder.co.uk in-

putting your son’s ZPD reading range, selecting Middle

Years (9-13) and narrowing the search down by topic/genre –

this software will generate a

‘shopping list’ of books which

he will enjoy and which will

be represent the appropriate

level of challenge.
