Sack Lunches for St. Francis Seraph Ministries Thank you to Good Shepherd parishioners for the great effort in making sack lunches for St. Francis Seraph Ministries (St. Anthony Center). On January 18, 390 lunches (780 sandwiches) were delivered to St. Anthony Center. With such a great response to this opportunity to make Sack Lunches at home, another opportunity is available for parishioners to drop off sack lunches this Sunday, February 7, anytime between 7:45 and 11:15 a.m. Lunches can be dropped off in the “walk-in cooler” at church (enter outside door #2 for easy access). Lunches will then be taken to the St. Anthony Center on Monday morning, February 8. Until we can come together in the Community Room, sack lunches will continue to be made at home, once per month, with drop off the first Sunday of the month (with the exception of April, when drop off will be Sunday, April 11). St. Francis Seraph Ministries provides daily sack lunches for day laborers whose take-home pay can be as little as $35 for a 10-hour day, as well as others in need. Each lunch includes two sandwiches, a drink and snack. St. Francis Seraph Ministries has informed us that they will accept lunches made at home by families as long as they are assured that good sanitary measures are taken when making the lunches (the wearing of gloves and masks). So, until we can restart the “Sack Lunch Sundays” at Good Shepherd, families have the opportunity to make lunches on their own and bring them to Good Shepherd. Bologna and cheese sandwiches work the best with no mayonnaise or mustard. Each lunch should include two sandwiches, a drink, and any type of snack. Small plastic water bottles or juice boxes work well. The lunch should be placed in a brown paper sack, folded over, taped and marked B/C for “bologna and cheese.” Families are most welcome to include a nice message or prayer in each sack lunch. Scripture Preview for Next Week—Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time by Deacon Max Schellman
Fasting and Abstinence During Lent
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days for both fasting and abstinence. Lenten Fridays are obligatory days of abstinence. Fasting is the reducing of the amount of food eaten in a day to one full meal plus two smaller meals that do not equal one full meal. It is mandatory for persons 18 through 59 (not for 60 and older and not for younger than 18). Abstinence is giving up meat (and poultry). It is obligatory for persons 14 and older.
First Reading—Job 7:1-4,6-7: Job’s story is one of a good man whose life is weighed down by many burdens and sufferings. These burdens are put on him to test his fortitude. In this passage, Job comments on the fleeting nature of our existence. He feels helpless with nowhere to turn in his quest for a better life as he tries to rid himself of his sufferings. Second Reading—1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23: St. Paul many times refused payment for his services. He saw the preaching and spreading of God’s message as payment enough. Some of his competing preachers cited this as a sign of weakness. Paul responds by saying that he has “become all things to all, to save at least some.” Gospel—Mark 1:29-39: Jesus leaves the synagogue in Capernaum. He goes to the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law is ill. Jesus cures her, and she continues to serve those around her. At one point, we are told Jesus rose early in the morning and went off by Himself to pray. Simon and others found Him and encouraged Him to return and told Him, “Everyone is looking for You.” During the time He remains there, He cures many and drives out numerous demons. We can ask ourselves, “how often do we pray?”
The purpose of fasting and abstinence is to gain spiritual focus, self-discipline, share in Christ's suffering and perform penance. We express our love of Christ through obedience to the Church He established. As sinners, we typically want to rebel and go our own way; by obeying the rules, we acknowledge God's authority and our love for Christ. There are exemptions other than age from the requirements of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill, including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Healing Christ Ministry Sessions February 8, 2021
Registration February 1-5, 2021 HCM will offer two options for our monthly healing sessions. They are 1) healing sessions at Good Shepherd and 2) Distance Healing. Both involve signing up in advance. These will be conducted as before, the second Monday of the month, February 8, 2021. You must sign up the week before, starting Monday, February 1 and ending Friday, February 5. Contact Theresa Kajs at [email protected] or 513-706-6398 to register and provide your email and cell phone number. Here is how the sessions will work. Select one of these 40-minute sessions. These options are also detailed on the Good Shepherd website. Healing at Good Shepherd. We will offer registration the week before, for a designated time, 9:30 a.m., 10:10 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. for morning sessions and 7:00 p.m. and 7:40 p.m. for evening sessions, as before. It is no longer first-come, first-serve, you need to register. Contact Theresa and she will confirm your attendance for the time slot and provide more information. We ask that you wear a mask. Hand sanitizer will be available, and your temperature will be taken. Please do not attend if you are not feeling well and change to a Distance Healing session. You will also sign-in as usual. Distance Healing. On the same day, we will also offer Distance Healing. Distance Healing is like saying a prayer for someone, but they will be working with you similar to our regular sessions. Our healers have been doing Distance Healing for up to 25 years. You will register with Theresa Kajs, as above. She will provide details once you register. Next month, the healing sessions are on the second Monday of the month, March 8; registration March 1-5. We also have individual distance healing sessions for parishioners in need—for example, surgery, cancer therapy or in the hospital.
Update on Father Wessling Father sends a hearty and healthy Happy New Year greeting to all of his many Good Shepherd friends. He is doing very well, although he had a mild case of COVID last fall. The amount of phone calls, get well cards, birthday wishes and Christmas greetings he received was truly heart-warming and gave his spirits a much needed boost as 2020 ended. Father Wessling has regained his energy and mobility and received his first COVID-19 vaccination! He would like everyone to know how grateful he is for their continuing support and encouragement. If anyone from Good Shepherd would like to visit Father on a Monday or Wednesday afternoon, please give Pamela Groskopf a call at 678-3288.

St. Vincent de Paul Drop Off of Items Clothing, small household items and other items can be dropped off anytime in the St. Vincent de Paul cupboard located on the right-hand side of the “Take It or Leave It” room. This room is located behind Activity Center B….as you walk in the main entrance, the “Take It or Leave It” room is on the left just past the Hospitality Room. A truck from St. Vincent de Paul comes each Tuesday to empty the contents in the cupboard. Your continued support of St. Vincent de Paul is appreciated.
This is the last weekend of the annual “Coat Drive” for Catholic Charities of Southwest Ohio. One van load and one carload of coats have already been delivered to Catholic Charities. Last year parishioners donated a record 471 coats!

Men’s Discussion Group This Tuesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m., the Men’s Discussion Group will once again conduct a Zoom meeting facilitated by Bob VeVerka which is open to all men of the parish. The group will hear from Mike Dunn, Executive Director at St. Vincent de Paul/Cincinnati. Mike will talk about how and why he became the executive director of this $38 million dollar organization. He will help us understand how SVDP donates to those in need. He will also explain their extensive volunteer program, and where they may currently need help. Baptism Infant Baptisms are currently being scheduled individually. Before the Baptism, parents need to attend a session to explore the meaning of Baptism. Please see page 4 of this bulletin for more information.
Adult Initiation Into the Church Adults and children (7 years of age or older) who wish to become Catholics are invited to call Emily Weierman, (513-489-8815 ext. 726 or e-mail [email protected]).
First Eucharist (First Communion) First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated on two occasions in early spring. Parents are invited to call Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761). Children are invited to the Sacrament when they are in the second grade or have reached the age of 7. Children receiving First Eucharist (First Communion) need to be prepared to receive First Reconciliation (Confession). Preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession) begins early fall each year.
Confirmation for Youth Confirmation is celebrated in the spring each year for youth who have not yet received the Sacrament. Confirmation Prepa-ration takes place within the 8th grade Faith Formation curriculum. Classes run September through April for next year’s candidates. Marriage Marriages are celebrated throughout the year with exceptions made for Christmas holidays and the season of Lent. Please contact Steve Lindner for information (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]). Preparation for marriage begins eight months before the Sacrament is celebrated. Pastoral Care of the Sick Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick can be offered when someone is seriously ill, requires surgery, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious. For those wishing to be anointed, please call the parish office at (513) 489-8815 to schedule a time to be anointed.
Ministry to the Dying: Anointing and/or Viaticum If a person is near death, he or she may be anointed. However, if the dying person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of an illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest or a deacon may give Viaticum to the dying person. When a priest is unavailable, it is important that the deacon visit the dying to pray with that person and the family and offer Viaticum. Please call the parish office (513-489-8815). After hours, please leave a message about the location of the dying person and your contact phone number. That message will be relayed to a priest or deacon.
Reconciliation (Confessions) Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the church. Those attending the Sacrament can enter through the doors to the church, prepare in the church and enter the Reconciliation Room when they see the priest is not occupied with another penitent. Please wear a mask during confession.
Vocations Single men or women interested in answering the call to Priesthood or Religious Life are encouraged to contact the pastor or the Diocesan Vocations Director at 513-421-3131.

Low-Gluten Hosts Low-Gluten (0.01%) hosts are available at all weekend Masses. Please come to the Sacristy 10 minutes before the start of Mass and let the Sacristan know that you are in need of this Low-Gluten Host. At Communion time, come to the hand rail by the statue of Mary to receive the Eucharist. St. Vincent de Paul If you have furniture or appliances that you wish to donate, St. Vincent de Paul will accept these donations and will pick them up from your home.
