darkened. "But some guys won't be coming back."

"You'll come back, Bruce. But even if you didn't, no one could take your place . . ."

"Not even What's-HisName? The guy with the long suffering look . . ." Bruce loved to tease her about Hank.

"No one else... ever..." Marge had re- peated. Bruce's grin vanished. "I don't want you to be hurt, honey, especially not by me."

He hadn't even let her write to him. "Letters are no good, Maggie... they tie

you in knots and keep you miserable. When I come back... if I come back... we'll start from there. O.K?"

Marge had scanned the list of returning service men... for months... she had sent a Christmas package that was never ack- nowledged... finally she sent long letter ... and at last there had been a note...

".... sorry I didn't acknokledge the package... thanks... I'm not so sharp at this letter • riting . . . had ashort urlough but there wasn't time to look you up... Bruce."

Marge came in sight of the bench... their bench ... and she stiflened suddenly.

It wasn't possible... but there he was! Marge walked toward him slowly, half

expecting to have him vanish as he had in her-dreams.

It was Bruce. He was leaning forward, talking to a squirrel in his persuasive husky

The habit was so strong' that Marge scar- cel• hesitated before turning down the elm- bordered walk. It meant that she would be late meeting Hank, but Hank would wait.

First he had x•aited until she finished school . . . and then x•hile she completed a business x•orld. He had waited while she fell in love with Bruce ... and Bruce was

ß nt to Korea . . . and Hank was still wait- ing.

V•'ell . . . now she had made up her mind. She was on her way to tell Hank . . . but first she had to walk down this path once more, had to skirt the wading pool, and pass the bench where she used to meet Bruce.

Funny how she could still close her eyes and see him. His black eyes and impudent grin... Marge sighed: Maybe every girl had a Bruce in her life somewhere... the dream prince. Maybe. that was what made it pos- sible to marry the Hanks of the world... the waiting .type.

Bruce hadn't wanted her to wait for him. Far from it.

"Look Angel-puss", he told her that last evening. "Wars have a nasty habit of going on for a long time. Let's not make some promises . . ."

"I like promises," she assured him, "even if you. don't. I'll be right here waiting . . ."

Bruce grinned. "I believe you will at that. The faithful type." Then his eyes had

her eyes. "People do change, Maggie .'.." "I haven't changed," she told him. "Have

you?" "Yes," he admitted flatly. "I've changed." "Then... why did you come back...? He gave her a direct glance. "It's hard to

.explain, honey. You're the waiting-kind of girl. It didn't seem fair to let you go-on waiting..."

"I see..." Margo's chin lifted. "There was no reason for you to feel responsible . . ."

Bruce glanced away. "I'm sorry, Maggie. Old Faithful is the guy for you . . . a solid citizen ..." He ducked asi-de as .a baseball went whizzing past his head and turned halfway around to yell at some boys who were playing nearby... "Hey, you kids... take it easy!"

Too late, his hand shot out to grasp Mar- go's wrist. There was a panicky note in his voice as he called, "Let them get their own ball . . ."

Marge had darted behind the bushes that formed a backdrop for the bench. She. Stood there for a long moment before she leaned over and picked up the baseball.

':Here you are boys." She thre• the ball toward them and sank down on tho bench beside Bruce. "Bruce," her voice was very gentle. "Bruce... all the time I loved you there was only one thing • tong... just one little thing. You didn't need me. You need anyone... it's pretty importan. t,. a girl being needed."

He turned his head and smiled. "Is-•it?" "Yes, Darling, will you please marrF me?" The smile had reached his eyes now. "Nice

girls wait until they're asked," he reminded her. ' ' '"

Bruce made a groan as he pulled her against him. "Well, anyway... I tried. You can't ever say that I didn't try to-let you of . . ."

After a moment she pulled herself away. "I love you," she said. "I knew you'd come

back to me." "I knew it, too, Angel-puss." He looked

like the old Bruce . . . his eyes were dark and shining. "Now... if yo uthink you can handle the family bus we might as well get going... ?"

She leaned forward and brushed a swift kiss across the top of his head... when {hey got to a phone she'd have to call and explain to Hank... explain why she h•d left him waiting at the license bureau for the b-st part of the afternoon.

Hank would understand . . . he always had.

She was smiling as she went behind the bench and trundled out the wheel chair tha had been so carefully hidden. ..:
