Our Kids-Generation iYSource: www.growingleaders.com - Tim Elmore

“The Millennials born after 1990 are a whole new batch of students. We call them Generation iY because their life is dominated by the iPhone, the iPod, iTunes, etc.” Tim Elmore

This generation of students can be summarized with the phrases:

They believe they can do great things…but they can be idealistic. They want to act now…but they can be impatient when results

take too long. They love interaction…but may avoid initiating if they must act

alone. They have a high self-esteem…but they can appear self-centered. They want to explore the future…but can be paralyzed when faced

with so many options.

Questions your 9th grader might be nervous about: What do I do if someone is bullying me?

Talk to an adult, online bullying report (HS webpage) or the Emergency Text Line

Are there fights, drugs, and alcohol everywhere at GBHS? NO! Students are well aware of the consequences (10 day

suspension) for these offenses and usually choose not to risk it. When can I use my phone?

During passing time and at lunch. Sometimes during class but only when teacher gives permission.

GBHS is so big! How will I ever get to my classes on time? Students are given 9 minutes if they cross campus and 6 if they

do not. Students adapt to the building quickly.

Questions your 9th grader might be nervous about:Mrs. Trish Poelke, Assistant Principal

Will I have lunch with my friends? There are 3 lunches. Students will have many friends to choose from. If they are not

able to find someone, have them see a counselor and we will help. Will I have to cross in the polar vortex?

Yes. We will provide shuttle buses when the temperature reaches -15 What if my locker is far away?

If your students’ locker is not working for them, have them come to the office. They can also have a locker at each campus if needed.

Will I get “lost” at GBHS because it is so big? The advantage of a large school is that students have so many choices of friends,

clubs, and activities. Have your student get involved and they will not feel lost. Will the principals be mean to me?

We are actually very approachable and friendly. We will listen to your student and help them in any way that we can.
