Welcome to GymSkills 2019 Everything you need to know about GymSkills 2019 Our GymSkills program is based on Gymnastics for All which is an introduction for all ages to the sport of gymnastics. It concentrates on the 6 DMPs (Dominant Movement Patterns) of Springs, Landings, Statics, Hand held apparatus, Swings and Rotations. Each term focusses on aspects of each of these through the use of trampolines, rings, bars, beams, vault, ribbons, balls, ropes and floor. At times the exercises are done to music. Because this program is introductory, and age based rather than skills based, assessments are no longer formally carried out. Rather, each child’s abilities are determined constantly, and assessments are available for parents at any time. Our program offers a fun week at the end of each term where gymnasts can try out all their skills on a circuit designed for their level. The opportunity to branch out into a specialised gymsport exists should the child have found a love for a particular apparatus or style of gymnastics. However, some children just love the fun aspect whilst developing basic skills useful in all aspects of life and sports.

WhyGymSkillsGymnasticsarethebuildingblocksofsports.Childrenexposedtogymnasticsfromanearlyagedevelopfineandgrossmotorskills,learntobepartofteams,areexposedtosocialsettingsandgrowemotionally,physicallyandmentally.Forexample,GymSkillsgivesachildtheopportunitytodevelopupperbodyandgripstrengththroughtheirSwingswork.DuringRotationsandStaticschildrendevelopcompetenciesincorestability,weightbearingandspatialawarenessAllskillscoveredinGymSkillsstimulatethevestibularsystemandareusefulinnotonlygymnasticsbutalsoinwakeboarding,waterskiing,golf,soccer,basketball,diving,dancing,tennis,martialarts,cricket,yoga,swimmingandmanymoresports.Butmoreimportantly,running,skipping,jumpingandlandingarefundamentalskillsforusalltohave.

WhatyouneedforclassWhencomingtogymnastics,thereareafewthingsyouneedtobring.Firstly,ensureyouwearappropriateclothingtoclass.LeotardsorTshirtswithshortsorbikepantsistheidealoutfitforworkinghard.Nojewelry,jeans,schooluniformsorbaggyclothing.Duringcoldertimes,warmclothingsuchasjumpersandtrackpantscanbewornaslongastheyareremovedwhenwarm.Weaskgymnaststodressthiswaysothatbodyshapeandtensioncanbeproperlyassessedduringtraining.Secondly,ensurethatyoubringawaterbottlecontainingonlywatertoeveryclass.Itisreallyimportanttostayhydratedwhilsttraining.TheClubsellsbottlesofwaterfor$1.00.Thirdly,bringapairofsockssothatyoucanjumpofthedoubleminitrampolinesifthatisincludedontheday.TheClubalsosellssocksfor$1.00apair.Lastly,donotbringanyfoodorchewinggumtogymnastics.Councilregulationsdonotallowfoodinthehallatanytime,anditisdangeroustobeeatingwhiletraining.

Ineachclass,regardlessofage,westartwithawarmupandstretchtonotonlyreducethechanceofinjuriesbutalsotogetourbodiesreadytotackletheexercisestobelearntonthatday.Thewarmupusuallyincludesagameand,dependingontheagegroup,somestrengthandconditioning.DuringeachclasswegenerallyconcentrateononespecificDMP(DominantMovementPattern)andprovideexercises,sometimesincircuits,whicharedesignedtodevelopthebodyandmind.

Finally,wecooldown,againusuallywithsomestretchesoragame.
