Welcome to Metro Atlanta: Agenda
1 Who is Metro Atlanta?
3 What will joining the corps look like?
2 What are the requirements to teach here?
4 What can I expect from my two-year experience?
5 Reminders & Questions
16
Requirements to Teach in Metro AtlantaThe No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires that incoming teachers meet a specific set of criteria, partially determined by each state, in order to be deemed certified and “highly qualified.”
In Georgia, this means that corps members must meet two big requirements –• Take and pass all GACE exams for their subject assignment to be eligible
for hire• Enroll in an alternative certification program during their two year
commitment.
17
GACE Tests: They are rigorousIn Metro Atlanta, all corps members must take and pass both the GACE Program Admission Test, GACE Educator Ethics entry exam and all required content tests for their subject placement prior to the first day of school to be eligible to interview, be hired, and reach a Metro Atlanta classroom in 2016.
If you do not take and pass all of your tests, you will be unable to teach in Metro Atlanta and will need to request a deferral to join the 2017 corps.
These exams are very rigorous, and we encourage you to consider testing in your commitment to join the corps. We know that successful corps members spend about 60 hours (total) preparing for their exams, so it is important you are as committed to preparing for and passing your tests as you are to Teach For America.
In 2015, 94% Metro Atlanta corps members passed their exams; however, only 67% passed on their first testing attempt.
18
GACE Tests: Test sooner rather than laterWe strongly urge you to take the earliest possible exam and to begin preparing now. You are required to take and pass all required exams – both PAT and content tests – no later than the June 22nd test administration so you receive scores back before the first day of school.
19
GACE Tests: We will support you in preparingWhile we will recommend resources for you to use in order to prepare for your test and to assist you in the registration process, it is ultimately your responsibility to take and pass all of your exams.
Resources and Supports for you – • 1:1 calls with Metro Atlanta testing support specialist (Angela)• Google content groups – engage, connect, set up study groups, swap
resources with other CMs taking your tests!• Onboarding website with helpful online (& free!) resources grouped by
content• Practice tests purchased for you by MATL team• Partnership with 20/20 Prep, a GACE preparation and tutoring company
offering you group webinars and tutoring to prepare for your exams + regional test prep support – session schedule will be shared in early December and these will be mandatory for all CMs– We have data showing these sessions increased CMs’ test passage significantly – even
those CMs who initially didn’t pass their exams!
20
GACE Tests: You can start now
Get started now in your preparation and understanding of GACE testing!• Visit www.gace.ets.org to learn more!• Read our regional testing guide for more details, your content specific
exams, and materials in the Applicant Center.• We will host GACE test prep sessions in person and via webinar-
dates/times coming soon!• If the financial cost of these tests is a concern for
you, please reach out to me directly . More information is in the registration instructions in our regional testing guide.
21
Alternative Certification in Metro Atlanta
Alternative certification is the process by which someone from a non-traditional education background (not an undergraduate or graduate education major) attains a license to teach professionally in a classroom.
Georgia has a tiered certification system which requires every teacher to be on an Induction Pathway 4 teaching certificate for three years before earning a professional certificate. This means that you will need to complete a two-year certification coursework program while fulfilling your two year Teach For America commitment. Then, if you wish to obtain your professional teaching certificate (which is renewable), you will need to teach an additional third year.
If you do not enroll in, and do not remain in good standing with, a program, you are at risk for termination by your employing school and/or district and dismissal from Teach For America.
22
Alternative Certification Requirements• Every corps member must be enrolled
in an alternative certification program by the first day of school. Exception – you are already certified in Georgia or gained reciprocity from another state (see reciprocity instructions in the Onboarding Logistics guide in the Applicant Center).
• There are two paths toward certification in Georgia – certification only or earning a Master’s of Arts in Teaching.
• You will need to choose a program – certification only or Master’s degree – in late spring 2016 to ensure enrollment by the start of school in the fall.
• You will have many opportunities to learn about all 2016 program options during the spring via webinars and other communications.
23
Current Certification Options for 2016 - 2017
24
Alternative Certification: more info to come
• If GSU does not accept a TFA cohort for 2016, then you may apply to their graduate/certification program independently of TFA.
• You will receive more communication about choosing a program in spring 2016!
• Currently, we are exploring other options for programs that offer a Master’s degree option given that the Georgia State University/TFA partnership may not be available in 2016. The GSU/TFA cohort option will be dependent upon enrollment.

Onboarding Experience
hours per week (on average; more when you’re studying for your GACE tests) on Teach For America commitments between now and May.
• You will need to regularly check and respond to communications from our team, and complete critical action steps to be ready to teach in fall 2016.
• You will gain knowledge, skills, and mindsets needed to be a successful teacher in Metro Atlanta on day one of school!
• You’ll work with our Metro Atlanta pre-service team this fall and spring to get ready for your classroom next year!
• You’ll have pre-work, studying & testing, hiring actions, and more – you can expect to spend about 3-5
27
Placement Process: Building context
In placing corps members, we have four priorities:• Meet the need of our placement partners (district, charter, ECE site)
and students• Create and maintain sustainable relationships with our placement
partners through positive hiring experiences for principals, human resource/hiring managers, and corps members
• Secure interviews that will lead to jobs for all corps members who are eligible with passing GACE test scores by the first day of school
• Ensure corps members are set up to successfully interview with principals as this is the primary way to secure a job
Though the vast majority of corps members receive a placement that matches their original assignment, it is possible that your placement could not match, as a result of changing district, school, or site-level needs. For this reason, it is important that you remain as flexible as possible during the placement process.
28
Placement Process: Your role
Your role is to actively and positively participate in the placement process as outlined by Teach For America –
• Take and pass all assigned GACE exams to be eligible to be interviewed and hired
• Only interview for positions explicitly shared with you by our placement team – you may not solicit or find your own placement
• Attend all interviews to which you are invited to ensure you have the best chance possible to be hired
• Prepare for interviews and complete pre-interview actions (such as creating a resume) with the resources provided by our placement team
• Respond to all communications within a timely and professional manner
• Accept the first job you are offered, regardless of location, district, salary, etc.
• Complete all hiring district/charter paperwork and trainings in a timely manner (as required) and meet all requirements (including passing background checks)
29
Placement Process: Helpful Information
• Most Metro Atlanta hiring takes place during the summer – most of our 2015’s CMs were hired at our Induction hiring fair in May– One CM will be hired first, one CM will be hired last – it’s important
to remain positive and flexible– Hiring can begin as early as mid-spring and end as late as past the
FDOS – In 2015, 100% of GACE-eligible CMs were hired before the FDOS
• Teach For America is not youremployer; your employer will be your hiring school district or charter partner
• You will likely not be officially hired, processed, and employed by your district (regardless of offer date) until the end of July
