What kind of media institution might distribute your magazine and why?

• The magazine would be distributed in non traditional formats, such as an online version that may be paid for with a subscription. It could initially be offered for free for a short period of time as a promotional ‘try before you buy’ offer. After that point, it would be sold through an annual subscription and users would be able to pay for single issues to view online at a price lower than the £2.00 cover price. To ensure the magazine is widely and regularly distributed throughout London, it would be controlled by a large media company such as IPC which distributes NME. The magazine would generate revenue from its cover price and advertisements, guaranteeing its quality. Content of the magazine could additionally be distributed using mobile phone applications.

IPC Media Brand Profile of NME Loud And Quiet gives its readers choice offering monthly or annual subscriptions and a range of methods to pay for them

• As the target audience spend a large proportion of their disposable income on clothing, fashion retailers would distribute the magazine. This practice is already fairly commonplace, with Loud And Quiet, a free publication, stocking their publication in boutiques. Gig venues and clubs would perhaps be more relevant institutions to sell the magazine in, as the publication features a listings guide in every issue. Additionally, these institutions would be familiar to the audience and would be easy for them to find.

• Newsagents, supermarkets and newsstands might distribute the magazine because these are also places the reader would expect to find a music magazine. Shops like WH Smith group magazines by type, so potential readers could come across the publication when buying other music magazines.

• As the magazine is dedicated to promoting new music acts, it would also be ideal to stock the publication in entertainment retailers such as HMV and smaller independent record shops. It would be particularly effective to stock the magazine in HMV as magazines sold there have a prominent point of sale at the till.
