POPULATION

DEFINITION• A population is a summation of all the organisms of the same group or species, which live in a particular geographical area, and have the capability of interbreeding.

• In ecology, the population of a certain species in a certain area is estimated using the Lincoln Index.

Studying Population

• The study of population is referred to as demography

• A person who studies population is a demographer

• The statistics gathered are demographics

DEMOGRAPHY• The statistics such as births, deaths, income, or the incidence of diseases, which illustrates the changing structure of human population.

• The study of composition of a particular human population.

POPULATION• 6th largest population (185.9 million)

• Growth rate: 1.6%

• Birth rate: 31 births/ 1000

• Death rate: 8/ 1000

• Life expectancy: 63.4years 62(M), 64(F)

• Infant Mortality: 61.27deaths/1000 live births

Why do we study population?

1. Where people live?

2. Are there enough resources for everyone?

3. Why do more people die in some nations than others!

4.Where are most babies being born?

POPULATION DENSITY• The density is the number of people per unit area (per sq. mile, per sq. km, etc.)

• Population Density =  = 230

• FACTORS affecting population density:– Physical: Relief, Climate, Soil, Water Supply, Natural Vegetation, etc.

– Human: Economic, Political, Social 

CONCLUSIONS

• Is the world even in population distribution (density)?

• Do all persons live at the same economic level?

• Do all persons have the same opportunities as you?

• Are there ways this can change?
