Palestine ISD joined with school districts throughout Texas and nationwide to celebrate January as “School Board Recognition Month”. At the January school board meeting each campus made special gifts to show appreciation for our board members with the Texas Association of School Board’s theme in mind, “A Work of Heart”. Palestine ISD board members do serve from the heart, and it was no surprise that they were chosen as the Region 7 School Board of the Year!

A Winter Pep Rally will be held for PHS students involved in winter sports on Thursday, January 29th, 2:40 pm at the PHS Competition Gym. Many thanks to the PHS Athletic Booster Club who will serve hotdogs for the students after the pep rally.

WECC students surprise us each day with all that they know and are able to do! We are so lucky to get to see their faces light up as they learn and master new skills! Whether it’s the predictability of the requests from a group of 3 or 4 year olds, or the fascination of teaching them, there is never a dull moment and it all proves to be a great benefit to children’s development. That’s why we do it everyday.

Support Services

This week, January 12 – 16, 2015 is Chartwells Eat, Learn, Live week. The High School Culinary class has been challenged to a recipe contest. They are to follow the USDA guidelines that we must follow to come up with their own recipes. On Friday, January 16, there will be a panel of judges tasting their creations and will determine a winner. That recipe will be submitted to Chartwells Culinary Team to make sure it meets the USDA guidelines and will be featured in the PHS Cafeteria for lunch or breakfast at a later date.

On Tuesday, January 13, Palestine Junior High staff helped with the Weekend Backpack program sponsored by East Texas Food Bank. We met at Court Drive Church of Christ, helped unload boxes of backpacks, and transferred the backpacks to Lone Pine Baptist Church where they are stored until Friday, when the backpacks are delivered to PISD students. Each month a different campus is asked to send volunteers to help. Thanks to Jane Paris, Cristina Aguilar and Mr. Odiaka for their help yesterday and to Mr. Cooksey for his support.

Food Service

Instead of having my associates participate in a recipe contest, I asked the HS Culinary class to come up with recipes. They had the USDA guidelines and had to follow those when creating their recipes. It helped to give the students an insight to what we feed them and why. There were 3 teams and the taste test was held today, January 16, 2015 in the PISD Wildcat Café.

•Team One – Beef Vegetable Soup and Cornbread

•Team Two – Lasagna Soup with WG Bread

•Team Three – Bacon Cheeseburger Meatloaf with Brown Rice & broccoli Casserole

The three judges, Coach Baker, Mr. Kiser and Mrs. Paul, determined Team One the winner, based on appearance, taste and adaptability to the menu. I will post the results in the Wildcat Weekly, a weekly newsletter that goes to the entire PISD staff. The culinary students were so excited to do this contest, they asked if the next one could be like the “Chopped” show on Foodnetwork
