Senator Robert Nichols came to Palestine on Septem-ber 20th to gain insight on education issues from area school superintendents in preparation for the Texas 86th Legislative Session which will convene in January, 2019. We always appreciate Senator Nichols for taking time to listen to the concerns of schools in his district.

During the visit; superintendents from Palestine, Westwood, Neches, Slocum, Cayuga, and Elkhart discussed areas in which schools need legislative assistance and Senator Nichols shared thoughts on what he expects from the next legislative session.

Senator Nichols told the group that he feels the Texas Legislature has an interest in helping school employees with the cost of health insurance. He does not expect the TRS defined benefit plan to be changed to an employee contribution plan. (The current defined bene-fit retirement plan ensures retirees of benefits through-out their retirement; however, an employee contribution plan could potentially leave retirees without an income at some point.) The senator also informed the group of his interest in assisting school districts with the recruit-ment of quality teachers into public education due to the current shortage of teachers in Texas.

During the fall, Palestine ISD will join with other school districts in Anderson County to compile a list of priori-ties to share with elected officials prior to the legislative session. By informing legislators on what is working, and what is not working, our hope is that good things will be accomplished for the students and employees of Texas schools.

The Fall Tennis team won the District 19-4A title this week with a 14-5 win over Madisonville. It is the third straight fall district title for the Wildcats. The team won 5 of 7 doubles matches to get the lead and then took 9 of 12 singles matches. The Wildcats will finish district play at home Thursday, October 4th against Mexia, where we look to finish undefeated in district. Coach Scott Tyler Volleyball

The Ladycat Volleyball Team lost a tough opening district match against Fairfield last Friday. (17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 23-25). Ja'Bria Simmons and Shayla Arthur each had 10 kills for the Ladycats. Destiny Mathews added 7 kills. Ka'Zem Wood had a big night from the serving line with the Ladycats scoring 18 points while she was behind the serving line and she had 4 aces, she also contributed 23 assists on the night. Ka'Zem led the team defensively with 8 digs, Raina Hanzik had 7 digs. The next game for the Ladycats will be Tuesday, October 2nd at Rusk. Coach Janae Evans Cross Country

The Varsity Cross Country Boys competed in Grand Prairie Invitational this week and came away with a 2nd place finish out of 44 teams. There were 280 runners in the race and Luis Rangel was our top finisher with an 11th place finish. He was followed by Michael Guzman 14th, Cristian Guzman 25th, Garrett Bowden 29th, Alexis Mendoza 31st, Grant Attaway 34th, Daniel Sanchez 37th, and Michael Chaidez 62nd finish. JV Cross Country Boys competed in the Elkhart CC meet this week and they all did a great job of running. My JV1 team was moved up to the varsity division and they came away with a 2nd place finish. They were led by Raul Ramirez, Jonathan Sanchez and Jose Sanchez. The JV2 team competed in the JV division and they came away with a 1st place finish! They were led by Jonathan Sandres , Lizardo Lemus, and Gonzalo De La Cruz. Coach John Absalom Football

The Varsity Football team will be on the road to play the Crandall Pirates tonight. Kick-off at 7:30 pm. Coach Morgan Robinson The Junior Varsity Wildcat Football team suffered a tough lost Thursday night to the Crandall Pirates 34 to 27. Although a great effort was given, the JV Wildcats left the field highly disappointed. Quarterback Cagen Clark started the scoring for the night with an 85 yard touchdown pass to ShoVeir Clewis. The PAT was good by Adrian Olivera. Byron Deyon led Special Teams with a 60 yard TD kickoff return. MyDarius Barrett scored on a 15 yard TD pass from Clark. Final scoring for the JV Wildcats came from Jakerian Lockett with a 55 yard TD run. Outstanding Defensive player was Chris Bryant with multiples break-ups. The 4-1 JV Wildcats are gearing up for district play. The JV Wildcats will have a Bi next week. Coach Darold Turner

The Freshman Wildcats had an exciting come from behind finish Thursday, September 27th to end in a 26 to 26 tie with the Crandall Pirates. The Wildcats went into the second half trailing 20 to 6, but an amazing effort by Jerrod Walker lead to 20 unanswered points by the Wildcats. Walker lead the offense with a 60 yard touchdown pass to Jadrian Conley, a 30 yard touchdown pass to Bryce Jackson, and a 12 yard touchdown run. Quan'te Gage had a big second half and finished a drive with a 2pt conversion after a Tyler Hunt 15 yard touchdown run. Defensively, Jermny Walker had a huge 2nd half Interception and Jaylon Pryor had drive ending sack. The team played with true Wildcat heart and we are very proud of their competition.
