THOMPSON & MEADOWS EARN TOP TEN FINISHES

PAIRET WINS 9TH GRADE RACE Twenty schools were represented at the 9th Virginia Middle School Invitational held at Hardy Cross Country Course at FUMA. The host school was well represented with a 5th and 6th place finish in the Middle School Championship. Will Thompson improved on his performance from a year ago by over four minutes and claimed the last spot in the top five with a 19:31. Meanwhile, seventh grader Avi Mead-ows continued his rapid rise with a 6th place finish in 19:36. Meadows was the second 7th grader across the finish line. For Thompson, the meet was a springboard into the championship season where he will be counted on at the varsity level. Fork Union finished a respectable 5th place in the team competition thanks to the loan from the Orienteering team. Julian Yescas earned a top 25 medal with a 20:51 effort. In the 9th grade race, FUMA newcomer Thomas Pairet was the runaway winner with a personal best 17:50. With so many younger runners excelling for Fork Union the future looks bright!

ALBEMARLE INVITAIONAL Fork Union Cross Country made the annual trip to Albemarle County to participate in one of Virginia’s prem-ier meets, the AHS Invitational at beautiful Panorama Farms. The meet serves as a great indicator of what to look for in the championship meets in the weeks ahead. By all accounts, FUMA could have its best big meet sea-son in five years. The day got off to a slow start when freshmen fourth man Thomas Pairet was pulled from the line-up due to a sore hip. The top three continued to be FUMA’s strong suit with Alex Lomong taking the top spot for the Blue Dev-ils in 17:00. Brother Peter was next in for FUMA followed by senior Russ Garver. Garver was four minutes better than his previous trip to the AHS invite. Also coming up big in the improvement department was Jonathan Stone. He managed to finish nearly three minutes better than last year. The Middle school race was FUMA’s most suc-cessful part of the day with Will Thompson finishing fifth and seventh- grader Avi Meadows finishing tenth. Thomp-son was over two– minutes better than his last run at Pan-orama in August.

WITH GUSTO!

Fork Union Track is proud to an-nounce Nick Spiak ( FUMA ‘60) as the 2013 Gus Lacy Track Classic honoree. Spiak came to FUMA from nearby Hermitage High School in Richmond. Nick was a standout in football and track. He left FUMA for USC (Southern Cal) on football scholarship and played there for two years. He finished his education at Vanderbilt University. Nick credits FUMA with instilling a work ethic in him. That work ethic would lead to entrepreneurial success in the Food Ser-vice industry. Spiak started with one delivery truck in upstate South Carolina and now ser-vices 165 restaurants in the Carolinas. In 1997 he started a second business Sushi with Gusto. The franchise is now 175 strong.

NEWS FROM FUMA Long time Track Assistant and A.D. Micky Sullivan has given up his off-season job of coaching football. Rumors have him returning to the track staff. FUMA proudly opened Jacobson Hall on October 19th. Skybox rental fees for Gus Lacy Track Classic have not yet been determined. The Fred Hardy Invitational will be January 19th. This will be the 24th edition of the meet. FUMA Cross Country ran Woodberry Forest to a 29-29 tie just one week before the Prep League meet. Things are looking up for the harriers.
