General DescriptionBowen Wireline Control Heads effecta pressure drop within themselves, there-by reducing friction to the movement ofthe wire line. Since they actually reducepressure to facilitate running wire linesagainst pressure, there usefulness farexceeds that of line wipers or stuffingboxes, which merely confine or withstandwell pressure.

UseBowen Wire Line Control Heads havebeen utilized successfully in almost everyvariety of oil or gas well wire line servicewhere well pressures are a factor. In Per-manent Well Completion: running tools, setting chokes and valves, logging andperforating. In Thru-Tubing Services;logging, perforating, setting Bridge Plugsagainst pressure as in multiple fracturingcompletions, radioactive tracer jobs, andany other downhole wireline servicewhere well pressure must be overcome.

ConstructionBowen Wireline Control Heads aremanufactured from select materials toexacting specifications, insuring trouble-free operation, low maintenance andcomplete interchangeability of parts.

Bowen Wireline Control Heads aredesigned to allow assembly around thewire line without the necessity of rehead-ing the rope socket. For example; a21/4" O.D. tool will pass through the 21/4"nominal size Control Head. All internalparts of the Control Head are madein mating split halves to allow assemblyaround the wireline.

Bowen Wireline Control Heads arepressure tested before being shipped.Pressures at which the Control Headsare tested varies with the size andspecific requirements.

Bowen Wireline Control Heads incorpo-rate the features of a Flow Tube, a LineWiper, and a Spray Guard.

Flow Tube

The Flow Tube, which reduces the wellpressure applied to the Line Rubbers, consists of two identical halves boltedtogether around the wireline, firmlyseated and locked into the Control HeadBody. The bore of the Flow Tube is justlarge enough to permit free passageof the line. Fluid under pressure whichenters the bottom of the Flow Tubeundergoes a sharp reduction in volumedue to the restricted bore. Its steady flowis interrupted by the conical turbulencechambers, which cause a pressure dropfrom the bottom to the top of the Tube.Fluid passing through the Flow Tube, which has been reduced to a minimum,is drained off from the cavity by the FlowHose to a pit, barrel, or Flow Line.

Line Rubbers

The purpose of the Line Rubbers is toconfine the well pressure and wipe theline as in a Line Wiper. A set of LineRubbers comparable to those employedin all Bowen Line Wipers, fits around theline, seats on the top of the Flow Tubeand is compressed by a Packing Nutthrough a fitted set of Line Bushings. The Line Rubbers may be tightened orrelaxed by the adjustment of the PackingNut. The reduced well fluid pressurespassing through the Flow Tube are effec-tively confined by these Line Rubbers.

Spray Guard

The Spray Guard consists of a slottedrubber which fits around the line and aSpray Guard Body, made of two match-ing halves, into which the Spray GuardRubber fits. Assembled, the Spray Guardbecomes the top of the Packing Nut by athreaded connection. The Spray Guardprevents fluid spray from the top of theassembly. The fluids trapped in thePacking Nut cavity by the Spray Guardare drained away by the Drain Hose.

Sheave Bracket Assemblies

Sheave Bracket Assemblies are availablefor all Bowen Wireline Control Heads, asoptional accessories at extra cost. Theseare listed on page 14.

Hydraulic Packing Nut

Additional safety and convenience canbe obtained from the Bowen WirelineControl Head by the addition of aHydraulic Packing Nut Assembly. Thisassembly permits remote adjustmentand tightening of the Line Rubbers.

Hydraulic Packing Nuts are availableas optional equipment or as part of anassembly, depending on which specificassembly is ordered. A required acces-sory to the Hydraulic Packing Nut, is asuitable Hydraulic Hand Pump Assem-bly.

Tandem Flow Tube Assemblies

Where a greater pressure reduction isrequired than can be produced by asingle Control Head; Tandem Flow Tubeassemblies are available. These assem-blies effect approximately twice the pres-sure reduction of a single Control Head, since two flow tubes and two flow hosesare utilized. A Tandem Flow Tube assem-bly may be added to a standard ControlHead already in service, or obtainedcomplete with both Flow Tubes, Body, and Adaptor Body, as required.

The Tandem Flow Tube assembly isparticularly well suited to use near town-sites or on water locations, where thesurrounding area must be maintainedcontamination free.

See Specifications and ReplacementParts on pages 12 thru 15.

In construction, the Tandem Flow TubeAssembly is essentially a standard Con-trol Head, with the addition of an Adap-ter, Nut, Split Ring, Split Ring Retainer, and a second Flow Tube and Body. Asecond Drain Hose and Flow Hose areutilized to control flow and drainage fromthe second Flow Tube.

Hydraulic Hand Pump Assemblies

Bowen Hydraulic Hand Pump Assem-blies are self-contained units for supply-ing the necessary hydraulic fluid pres-sure to the Hydraulic Packing Nut of theControl Head, to effect a seal. They aresimple, rugged units, easy to operateand inexpensive to maintain. A built inreservoir contains sufficient hydraulicfluid to fill the Packing Nut and the norm-al operating length of hydraulic hose.Hydraulic fluid may be added to thereservoir while the unit is in service, ifrequired.

To operate the Hydraulic Hand Pump, connect one end of the hydraulic hoseto the Hand Pump, and the other to thePacking Nut. Close the valve (round

Tandem Flow Tube Assembly

handwheel) on the side of the Pump.Actuate the Pump Handle until a moder-ate resistance is felt. If spray is escapingfrom the Packing Nut, pump sufficientpressure to reduce the spray to a per-missible minimum. Caution should beexercised not to apply excessive pres-sure to the Packing Nut. Excessivepressure will cause the line rubbers toact as a brake, producing high frictionand needless wear on the line rubbers,as well as the line.

To reduce the compression on the linerubbers, crack open the pump valveslightly and re-close it. To completelyrelease the compression, open the pumpvalve one turn, allowing it to remainopen. The heavy spring in the HydraulicPacking Nut will retract the Piston, removing all compression on the linerubbers.

Assembly for OperationCarefully check the Flow Tube, Line Rub-bers, Line Bushings and Spray GuardRubber to assure that they are in goodcondition and of the proper size for thewire line to be used.

Installation on the wireline should be asfollows:

1. If the Hydraulic packing Nut is partof the assembly being used, assemble it as follows:

A.Drop the Piston Return Spring inthe Packing Nut.

B.Assemble the Piston Seal, SealProtector Ring and Non-ExtrusionRing on the Piston, and slide thePiston into the Packing Nut. Thelarge end should be down.

C.Assemble the Packing Nut Sealon the lower end of the PistonStop, and screw the Piston Stopinto the Packing Nut. Slide thisassembly over the wireline.

Page 6: Wireline Control Head

6

D.Insert the Spray Guard Rubber inthe Spray Guard Body, and screwthe Spray Guard Body into thePiston Stop.

2. Pass the cable head or rope socketthrough the Flow Tube Seals, andthrough the Control Head Body.

3. Bolt the two halves of the flow tubeonto the wireline above the ControlHead Body, and with the small endtoward the well head. Make surethat the mating faces of the FlowTube are clean and match properly.Secure the two halves using the sixallen nuts and screws.

4. Slide the Flow Tube Seals onto theFlow Tube and seat them in theirrespective grooves.

5. Insert the Flow Tube into the Body, pushing it all the way in until it“bottoms” against the internalshoulder of the Body.

6. Using Snap Ring Pliers, insert thesnap ring into the groove providedimmediately above the top of theFlow Tube in the Body.

7. Insert the Line Rubber (two halves)into the Body. Seat the two halves onthe Flow Tube. Be sure to insertthese with the flat face against theFlow Tube.

8. Install the Line Bushing (two halves)into the Body and seat the halvesagainst the Line Rubbers.

9. Slide the Hydraulic Packing NutAssembly (or Manual Packing Nut)down the wireline and screw it ontothe Control Head Body. Make it upby hand and wrench it up lightlywhen it “bottoms” to assure it doesnot loosen while handling. Do notovertighten it.

10. Assemble the Flow Hose to the Con-trol Head Body in the port provided.

11. Assemble the Drain Hose to thePacking Nut.

12. If the Hydraulic Packing Nut is used, assemble the hydraulic Hand Pumphose to the packing nut Piston Stop.

13. If a Tandem Flow Tube Assembly isbeing used, assemble the second(black) Flow Hose to the secondControl Head Body.

Note: Where a Tandem Flow Tube Assembly is

used, an Adapter (body) is used in place of the

standard Body for the upper Body, and a standard

Body below it. In such cases, the Split Ring, Nut,

Seal Ring and second complete Flow Tube will be

assembled onto the Adapter.

14. Make the entire assembly up on thelubricator, with the cable head orrope socket inserted into thelubricator.

15. String the wireline onto the sheave, where this is used, and assemblethe lubricator to the well head. Theassembly may then be put intooperation.

OperationThe Needle Valve at the operating end ofthe Flow Hose is normally left fully openwhile operating, only being closed whenit is used as a braking element, such aswhen coming out of the hole. The flowof fluid through the Flow Hose will havea pressure and volume of great variation, depending on the pressure and type offluid flowing from the well. The fluid isusually fed to a pit, barrel or flow line. The Bowen Control Head is designed tocontrol flow; not prevent it. It will producea drop in pressure only so long as thereis flow of fluid. Therefore, the valveshould not be completely closed unlessthe well is to be completely shut in.

The Pressure verses Sinker Bar Weightchart on page 8 may be used as a guideto determine the required weight toovercome well pressures, when operat-ing the Bowen Control Head. An average

7

allowance for friction has been included.Varying conditions of different wells willcause some variation from the requiredweights indicated.

The wireline used should be clean andfree from kinks, birdcages or wickersfor safe and effective operation with theBowen Wireline Control Head.

When operating under high gas pres-sure, the top of the lubricator, the ControlHead and the Packing Nut will becomevery cold. The greater the flow and thegreater the pressure drop between thewell head and the Flow Hose, the colderthe surrounding parts will become. As the wireline is withdrawn from thewell, the Line Rubbers should be tight-ened enough to prevent spray of the wellfluid. When going into the hole, the LineRubbers must be as relaxed as possible,to keep friction to a minimum. This isdone by removing all pressure exertedby the Packing Nut.

Where the Hydraulic Packing NutAssembly is used, it is used as follows.

1. Apply pressure by closing the smallvalve at the front side of theHydraulic Hand Pump. Actuate thePump until any spray subsides.

2. To remove pressure from the LineRubbers; open the small valve atthe front side of the Hydraulic HandPump.

3. If it is desired to relieve only part ofthe pressure, open the valve onlyslightly. When the pressure reducesto that desired, shut the valve. Thiswill retain any pressure already inthe Hydraulic Hose.

CAUTION: Avoid too much pressure on the Line

Rubbers. Too much pressure causes undue wear

of the Line Rubbers. The presence of a small

amount of spray at the Packing Nut does not

indicate that the Line Rubbers are not sealing;

they may be properly sealing and spray still

produced by migration of pressure up through the

inside sheath of the wireline. Therefore, under

high pressure operating conditions, it may be

impossible to eliminate all spray. This is the

reason for having the Spray Guard Rubber and

Drain Hose.

Casing Size Control HeadsBowen Casing Size Control Heads areessentially the same as tubing size Con-trol Heads, except that a different type ofBody is used as well as an Adapter Sub.

AccessoriesAccessory equipment has been de-signed and is available for Bowen Wire-line Control Heads, particularly in thelarger sizes designed for casing sizelubricators.

In casing perforating operations whererepeated exit and entry from the lubrica-tor is a necessary part of the operationand the steel perforator carrier must belaid down, the possibility of kinking theline exists.

It is desirable in this operation to permitthe entire Body and Flow Tube Assemblyto “ride” the top of the rope socket. Inorder to permit this, but not kink the lineacross 90° bends, a Flow Tube Sleeveand a Spray Guard with Funnel are avail-able for some Bowen Wireline ControlHeads.

The Funnel on the Spray Guard Bodyallows the wireline to make a soft bendas the gun carrier is laid horizontally, while the Flow Tube Sleeve is maintainingthe assembly rigid because the RopeSocket Stringer is confined within theSleeve.Handles installed on the Body are avail-able also for some sizes. These foldinghandles permit and expedite making andbreaking the Body and assembly fromthe Adapter Sub, eliminating the needfor wrenches when working up on a lubri-cator workboard.

Flow Tubes with Wear Rings (bushings)are available as optional accessories. These wear rings are inserted perma-nently in each mating half of the flowtube, at the top and bottom, which is thepoint of greatest wear. The wear Ringsare manufactured from very hard wearresistent material, and promote excep-tionally long life.

Flow Tubes for 5/8" through 3/4" diameterare also available as optional equipment. The standard Flow Tube will not accept abore larger than 9/16" diameter, thereforethe optional Flow Tube was designedto meet this comparatively rare require-ment.
