As I pull together my thoughts for this month’scolumn, the lambs in the fields all around areenjoying the sun on their backs and the sub zerotemperatures of Easter seem an age away. However, the legacy of the late snow and frost formany Welsh farmers will continue for a long time, with grass still in very short supply and feedconcentrates scarce in some parts. Theannouncement by Alun Davies, the newlyappointed Minister for Natural Resources andFood, of a £500,000 donation to a number of farmsupport and rural charities is welcome – but thiswill only go so far in addressing what has been adisastrous period for the industry. Our immediatearea did not suffer the worst brunt of the weather– but business margins remain tight – farmers’resilience will be tested more than ever.

On a more positive note, it is really heartening tosee evidence recently of a higher level of optimismand business confidence here in Talgarth. Lastmonth, we had the news that young businessmanGlen Ellis of Rotters’ Micro Brewery at The TowerHotel had received a double accolade fromCAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. CAMRAawarded The Tower their Gold Award for CiderPub of the Year for Brecknockshire as well asoverall Bronze Award winning Pub of the Year. It ishugely encouraging to see such a key town centrebusiness thriving on innovation and sheer hardwork and my congratulations go to Glen and hisfamily.

Similarly, customers at WJ George will have seenwith their own eyes over recent weeks the newbusiness venture that is taking shape on thepremises. Talgarth’s longest standing family businessis literally expanding into new territory, with thedevelopment of its own delicatessen next door tothe butchers shop. I was delighted to accompanyDai Davies, Special Advisor to Welsh BusinessMinister Edwina Hart, on a recent visit, hosted byBryan and Chris George. Dai was really impressed

by what he saw, whichhe felt was veryencouraging for thewider local economy. My colleague Lord DafyddElis-Thomas, Chair of the Assembly’s Environmentand Sustainability Committee and formerAssembly Presiding Officer, is very much lookingforward to being present at the official opening ofthe new venture later in the spring.

I hope to see many of you around at communityevents in the coming weeks. The inaugural TalgarthWalking Festival which is featured elsewhere in thisedition of Wye Local is a very exciting initiative andwill be the culmination of a lot of commitment andhard work by Talgarth Walkers are Welcome, involving collaboration with a range of businessesand local groups. Once again, we are at our bestwhen we work together to achieve sharedobjectives. Increasingly these days, Talgarth’sglorious natural environment is being discoveredand it is right that our local economy should reapsome of the benefits from this, as we aim to makethe town an even better place for visitors andlocals alike.

In the meantime, please don't hesitate to contactme if you have any feedback or issues of concernon 07703 112113 or by email:[email protected] Alternatively, you cancome along to my next advice surgery on Friday,3rd May from 5:00pm at Talgarth TouristInformation & Resource Centre. Appointments arenot essential – but advanced notice may be usefulif the issues you wish to raise are complex. You canalso pop into the TiRC to request a call from meon any issue which may be troubling you.

Best Wishes

William

News from Glasbury Wardby Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for GlasburyAt the time of going to print it really looks as if Springhas at last arrived. What a dreadful time it has been, especially for those in the farming community withsuch difficult conditions over the lambing period.

This last month has been ‘motor’ based with 4x4’sdriving on our green lanes causing big problems toour residents. I have also mentioned previously howboth Glasbury and Gwernyfed Community Councilshave come together to try and get the speed limitreduced in the residential areas either side ofGlasbury Bridge. You may have seen ‘tester strips’ onthe roads in the Glasbury area – so things areprogressing! At least the new cattle grids that we hadordered have now been fitted in the Painscastle area.

I sat on the interview panel to find a new tenant for aCounty Farm that had recently become available inthis area. These holdings originated after the 1st WorldWar and for very good reason. Nearly 100 years laterthey are still available to encourage new entrants intofarming. The four candidates that were interviewedcan only be described as outstanding and give

enormous confidence to those thinkingthat the young are no longer looking to progress inagriculture. We look forward to welcoming the Pricefamily to Cwmbach in May and I have no doubt thatthe three other applicants will all be running their ownfarms very soon.

True community spirit has again been shown withthe story of local Gwernyfed School girl NainaDickens-Chauhan. I found out about her fundraisingappeal by hearing that my neighbour Mrs MandyMills had offered via Facebook to bake a cake foranyone who would buy one with all the proceedsgoing to this great cause. Well done to Mandy onbaking so many cakes that over £1000 has beenraised by her efforts. The Black Mountain Lions havegiven £2000 and there are many fundraising eventsplanned. Well done everyone and let us hope thatNaina will have reached her £30,000 target and befitted with her new leg very soon.

Best wishes,Chris (07855 752110 or [email protected])

The Plant ShopExceptional Garden Plants & GiftsDue to my other commitments, I have had to make a

decision about the way that The Plant Shop trades; so,

my plants will be available outside the Café at Talgarth

Mill on a permanent basis, at Talgarth Country Market

on the first Sunday of every month, and at various NGS

events. I will also continue to offer advice, planning and

plants on an individual basis. My heartfelt thanks go

especially to Monica, Di, Iris and Edgar, and to all who

have supported me since I took the business over

from Jackie and Fiona.

Gardening has certainly been challenging for us over the

past couple of years, but I hope that we will all continue

to enjoy the pleasure it brings when things go well!

As you read this, I hope Spring has arrived at last, afterthe record breaking winter.

I received a call from Ann Tate at the SpaceguardCentre, formerly the Powys County Observatory nearKnighton who is booked to visit on the 17th April.Because of the vast amount of snow that was stillaround she was concerned about access for thecoach, and the forecast wasn’t good. We’ll let youknow next month!

At our March meeting, although it was still bitterly cold, plenty of our members and several visitors came tohear a facinating talk by Julian Gibson -Watt about hisfamous eighteeth century ancestor James Watt. Julianis very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about JamesWatt and his family. James Watt was a mechanicalengineer and brilliant inventor, supported andencouraged by a well known industrialist called Bolton. They later became partners. James Watt wasparticularly interested in the use of steam as energyand eventually managed to invent the steam engine, which had a far reaching effect on the IndustrialRevolution. He invented several other things including

the first document copyingmachine which needed specialink. Julian was happy to answerquestions from the audiencewho were very grateful to himfor coming to talk to us andmaking it a very enjoyable andinformative afternoon. Our next club meeting will be on May 22nd, 2.30p.mat Glasbury Village Hall. Please check posters locally fordetails of speaker etc. Raffle & Tea as usual. If you are interested in the trip to Abergavenny andPenpergwmn Gardens on the 14th May (please notethis is a Tuesday) leaving at 10.00 a.m from GlasburyVillage Hall, please book now.Looking ahead to June, a trip to AbbeydoreHerefordshire. Abbey and Gardens and Kilpeck churchJune 18th again (please note this is a Tuesday) leavingat 10.00a.m from Glasbury Village Hall.

New members welcome. Further details ring: Gloria -01497 847726, Geraldine - 01497 847697, Bob -01497 842900.

Back pain? Neck pain? Niggling joint pain?

Do you feel that you could benefit fromphysiotherapy but haven't had the chance to seeyour doctor to be referred yet?

Panic not! Powys teaching Health Board is nowrunning a new physiotherapy self referral scheme, based in the Bronllys physiotherapy department.

So, if you are registered with Hay and Talgarthdoctors' surgeries, go into your local surgery andpick up a self referral form. You fill in a fewquestions about your general health and details ofyour problem and post or drop it in to the Bronllysphysiotherapy department. Your form will beassessed by a physiotherapist, and, if your referral issuitable, you will be sent a letter asking you to calland make an appointment.

This scheme allows you to be in control of yourcondition, and gain the help you need withouthaving to wait for an appointment with your GPfirst. It also allows you an easy route back in to the

physiotherapy service if you have a reoccurrenceafter you have been discharged. So, be proactive, grab a form next time you're in the doctors'surgery and start the journey towards a morebody aware, less painful life.

Unfortunately, this service is not suitable for thoseunder the age of 16, or if you have a neurological, breathing orgynaeco log ica lcondition. If yourreferral is notfound to besuitable, or thephysiotherapistfeels you wouldbenefit from avisit to your GPfirst, you will becontacted andadvised aboutwhat steps totake.

News from Hay Town CouncilLast May’s elections to elect a council for the nextfour years took place at a time of great controversyin the town. This concerned plans to build a newschool on Forest Road and put a supermarket onthe present site. Candidates stood and wereelected at least in part on where they stood on thisissue. Following the elections I was elected Mayorand was concerned how this new group of tenwould gel as a team.

My concerns have, from the beginning beenunfounded. There has been a lot of work to ensurewe use everyone’s talents and strengths to improvethe town. This hard work has gone on all year, moving forward the many projects we feel willbenefit Hay; projects like the Gliss Project which hasimproved access to the river, affordable housing, theissue of dog fouling and many more.

The council has also been involved in somewonderful community events, the Jubileecelebrations, the reception to celebrate Josie’s

Olympic gold, the senior citizens’ Christmas partyand the turning on of the Christmas lights when theworld and his wife turned out to again see Josie. Allevents made special by the support of the peopleof Hay.

We hold monthly meetings which can be veryinteresting. Councillors want to be heard andoccasionally the meetings have become heated,Sometimes it is a challenge to insist on everyone’sviews getting an equal chance. In the midst of all thisseriousness, however, meetings have also been fun, with quick fire banter and sharp witty retorts. Ourmeetings are open the public. Come along and seewhat happens.

At the end of this month my term of office finishesand a new mayor will be elected. I hope they enjoytheir time as much as I did.

Best wishes,

Fiona Howard

Janette Hill & Co. SolicitorsThe Piece of Cake has now shrunkAs we wrote in a previous article, the government has now introduced changes to

the amount that victims of road traffic accidents will be paid in compensation for

their injuries. This came into effect on April 1st 2013.

In effect, the changes mean that if you are the victim of a road traffic accident then

you will not keep all of the damages payments you may receive, but will have to

pay a contribution towards the costs of the matter. For many victims, this will

increase the hardship they have suffered as a result of something that occurred

through no fault of their own.

From the 1st April if you are involved in an accident you have to pay a contribution

towards the cost of claiming. You will no longer be able to obtain and retain the

damages you were once entitled to.

One of the factors behind all this is the Insurance industry, which has pressed for

a reduction in the level of costs they have to pay towards the costs incurred by

victims through no fault of their own.

If you or someone you know has suffered an accident that resulted in an injury

which seems to be no fault of their own, then you should seek legal advice to

determine whether you could claim for compensation.

News fromMarch was a busy month. We worked with lotsof different local groups to push forward on ourheritage activities. We teamed up with the RuralMedia Company in Hereford to run weekly filmmaking workshops at Hay Youth Club andLlanigon Young Farmers. We plan to use the filmsto illustrate peoples’ recollections of Hay Market,Market Day and the May Fairs. We recorded thememories of Brin Jenkins from Hay and NitaJones from Llanigon. They shared some greatstories, which the young people will now bringalive to give an insight into how life used to beover two generations ago.

The Hay History Group is now formallyconstituted with lots of ideas and energy forfuture projects. The most exciting of which willbe the first Hay History Weekend, planned for 7-8 September 2013. Activities will include a familyhistory quiz about Hay, historical guided walksaround Hay, film screenings and a pop up

museum. Our next meeting will beheld upstairs at the Three Tuns onWednesday 24th April, 8pm. Allwelcome.

If you would like to find out more about theCheese Market Project, please visit ourinformation stand at Fair on the Square over theBank Holiday weekend 25, 26, 27 May. We will belocated inside the Cheese Market Hall, alongwith a team from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

You can also meet us at the Hay Festival on 30thMay when we join forces with architecturalhistorian Julian Orbach to present a talk onMarket Halls and the Cheese Market. Tickets £5,are available from the Hay Festival Box Office.

I was hoping when I wrote last month's article to beable to cheer the improved weather but somehowthe first half of April has let us down badly. Only in thelast few days have I seen farmers out working the landand preparing for sowing and planting. We will not seeany particularly early produce this year, and this ismade worse by the fact that it's been unusually cold inEurope which has slowed down their produce.

This is one of the reasons that prices have gone skyhigh, to the point that people have stopped buyingsome items in the wholesale market which has helpedto get some of the worst prices coming down again.Another problem is the burgeoning wealth ofcountries like India and China. They have entered themarket for all sorts of vegetables and are paying morethan we have hither to been used to.

Looking on the brighter side the first English asparagushas arrived from the Chinn family just this side of Ross-on-Wye. I understand that they are able to get theearliest crop as some of their beds have undergroundheating to start them off. This means it is not cheap butafter a long winter sometimes it is good to say "hangthe expense" and enjoy it.

This time last year the fruit trees were alreadyblossoming but without any bees or other pollinatorsaround. That was the reason for the very poor localcrops. As the trees have yet to show many signs of lifenature would appear to be getting back to normal, sowe should have a decent crop of fruit - in fact it maybe better than usual as the trees had a rest last year.

Because of some shortages broccoli has been verypopular recently. How many of you cut off the finerbits and throw the thick stem away? The Victoriansalmost preferred the stem which they peeled and cutinto chunks, par-boiled and made into a gratinee. Ihaven't tried myself but I think that any recipe forkohlrabi would be suitable for broccoli stems, providing another vegetable from the same source.

This will be the last issue before the Hay Festival starts.Whether one likes it or not, it cannot be denied thatit puts Hay well and truly on the map, and the waytrade in general and tourist trade in particular areconcerned that can only be to the good. I wish you alla very good Festival.

Lots of people liked my last column. Yippee.

The Easter Bunny brought me some chocolate eggs but they left a note on them saying that Mummy should eat them as I am too small. The Easter weekend was great fun, we had an Easter egg hunt and I got to see lots of my cousins.

I went to a birthday party at Eardisley Village Hall. My friend called Pheobe was 4 years old. There was a big bouncy castle but I was too small for that so I played with the balloons. Daddy made one stick to my head.

of people knew my name and said they’d seen my column. I came home with some funky dungarees.

After Bizzie Lizzie’s Nursery, Mummy takes me to the swings if the weather is nice. I chuckle when she pushes me.

Daddy goes on a big air plane soon, to Germany for work. I don’t mind too much as I get to go on holiday to Grannie and Grampies house. Mummy comes too and we get spoilit rotten.

And guess what? Because I now have two teeth, I have my own toothbrush. Brushing my teethy-pegs is nice.

Paul Xavier Jones is a South Wales based author of 6books, in the Epic Fantasy and Science Fiction Thrillergenres. Working as Practice Manager for localcompany, Janette Hill & Co. Solicitors. Paul is marriedwith two daughters.

In his first Epic Fantasy novel, we meet Ameca andFraya, a typical teenager and younger sister, who areunexpectedly transported to Mythrania, a world ofmagic, populated by savage beasts and an ancient evil.

Here the girls learn they are the legendary Heirs ofMenindus, prophesised to defend Mythrania and theUniverse, using magical powers they didn’t knowthey had – Ameca has the power of fire, and Frayacan create or heal.

Unlike other books in this genre, their father plays arole in the story, as he is also an Heir of Menindus, with the power of super speed.

The story follows the family’s journey, encounters

with the bestial servants of theScelestus – men transformed intoWere-creatures, and twisted magicusers known as Dark Ones. There arealso allies, in the shape of heroic men, an Elf and evena dragon.

The author has linked Celtic legends and weavedthem into a tale linked to the technology of ourworld in a story climax that leaves the reader lookingaround for the next book in the series, with thestrapline promise firmly in mind…

““LLooookk oouutt eevviill,, hheerree ccoommee tthhee ggiirrllss……””The other books in the series are; Ameca J and theRevenge of Rex-Ultar & Ameca J and the DemonGod of Mythrania. All available from Amazon

"My name is Naina Dickens-Chauhan, I am thirteenyears old and attend Gwernyfed High School. In manyways I am a regular teenager apart from the one thingthat sets me apart, the one thing that has taken somuch from me, cancer. It was the 15th of July 2012that I was finally diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, anaggressive and rare cancer of the bone.

Towards the end of May 2012 I started to get achingpains in my right ankle, I just thought it was from P.E.,which I loved. The pain didn’t go away, it started tomove up my leg and intensified, Mum stopped medoing P.E. hoping this would cure it, it didn’t, and thepain got worse. Mum started having to carry medownstairs as the pain in my leg had gotten so bad Icould no longer make it down them. Enough wasenough, no longer able to walk properly Mum tookme to Brecon Hospital where I was immediately X-rayed. The doctor noticed a problem with my Tibia, thelarger and stronger bone in your leg, I was sent on toNeville Hall Hospital. I had to sleep over at Neville Hall,to have blood tests, MRI and CT scans to work outwhat was wrong with me, I remember feeling anxious, but optimistic. Three days after being admitted I wastold the crushing news that there was a high chance ofme having Osteosarcoma, I was sent to BirminghamRoyal Orthopaedic Hospital, they confirmed thedevastating news, I had cancer.

I would need both an operation and chemo to get ridof the tumour in my Tibia, the chemo came first.Chemo made me awfully sick, but I remained positiveand I have been told I never complained. After tenweeks of Chemotherapy I had my operation at theBirmingham Orthopaedic Hospital, they took away thetop of my Tibia, and some of my femur and replaced itwith a silver coated knee bone. Although originally theoperation was a success my leg became infected, thewound became extremely painful and would not heal,I spent Christmas 2012 in hospital fighting the infectionin my leg. Even with lots of medication and great carefrom the hospital I was loosing the battle from infectionin my leg, while having it cleaned the surgeon noticedthat the muscle had lost its blood supply. I was left withonly one option, the shattering news that I was goingto have to have my leg amputated. I lost my right leg tocancer on January 7th 2012.

After my operation I was in a lot of pain, but thephysical pain was nothing compared to the sadness Ifelt, my life would never be the same again. The NHShave offered me a leg, and I am grateful, however it isvery restrictive and basic. Before cancer I was a keenhorse rider, with my NHS leg I will never be able to siton a horse. Before cancer I loved to swim, but I can'tswim with my NHS leg. I hate to split my life intobefore loosing my leg and after loosing my leg, I am stillthe same cheerful, bright Naina, cancer won’t changethat. However out there is a product that would meanI could walk with ease, climb stairs, ride a horse, havemy independence and be a normal teenager. Thisproduct is a C leg, it means that I would be able towalk in the same gait as before my amputation, notpossible with the clumsy and heavy NHS leg. The C leghas a technology called stumble recovery, meaning it isextremely stable and enabling me to walk on anysurface, it will also allow me to walk up and downstairs. The revolutionary microprocessor that controlsthe C leg means that it would be as close to having myleg back as is possible, it easily adjusts to changes, fromstanding stably to allowing me to ride a bike."

When I (Lisa Marie) first read this I instantly had anurge to help Naina. The NHS wont fund Naina’s C leg,the tool that will give her back the independence ofyouth, it will cost around £28,000 to get Naina thehelp she needs, as a community we can raise this tohelp this inspirational young lady get her confidenceback and enjoy living life to the full. Take a look at thefundraising page for up to date information:https://www.facebook.com/naina.fundraising

You really will be amazed how people are helping, some in small ways, some in bigger ways. But it reallydoesn't matter. Every bit helps to hit the target of£28,000. From head shaves to Medium readings, sponsored walks to raffles, quiz nights to cake sales, sponsored sky dive to a zumba evening ... and theseare just the things planned as we go to press. One locallady from Hay has donated her Avon sale profits.Individuals have donated on PayPal.

Thank you Naina for sharing your story with us, we atWye Local (and Local Beacon) wish you all the luckand will be making our own donation. Keep usupdated.

As a community we CAN do it ...

Local restauranteurs, the Taste Inn Wales Group, comprising Brecon Beacons trio Sean Gerrard, Glynand Jess Bridgeman, have gone back in time to joinforces once again with the Glanusk Estate to take overand breathe new life into the renowned eaterie, TheNantyffin Cider Mill, located just outside Crickhowell.

Sean Gerrard says – ‘We’ve gone back to our rootsagain! Our part in the Cider Mill story started over20 years ago and it was a huge part of our life, untilwe sold our interest in 2007. So when the Glanuskestate recently approached us to tell us that it wasgoing back on the market, we felt that it wasopportunity not to be missed.’

The Cider Mill was widely recognised as the area’svery first ‘gastro pub’ when the trio first took overand it was awarded a host of accolades during their17 year tenure. The Cider mill drew both localcustomers as well as from much further afield, with

its passionate ethos to produce fresh, local andseasonal food, with an eclectic wine list, artisanciders and real ales.

‘Back in the day’ said Jess, it was very unusual toserve local food and quite difficult to get a trueflavour of Wales. We really had to seek out thesmall, vibrant cottage industries who wereproducing amazing tasting produce. Today of courseit’s much easier with a superb and varied rangeavailable locally.”

The Taste Inn Wales Group owns three other‘restaurants’ in the Brecon Beacons: TheCastle at Llandovery; The Manor atCrickhowell; and Peterstone Court at Brecon.

Jess continues, “For over two decades we havebanged the local food drum and considering therecent meat debacle which hit the headlines, it is

more important than ever. We are incrediblyexcited about going back to our roots at theNantyffin Cider Mill, to grow new shoots and put itback to where it belongs, as a ‘must visit’ restauranton the Welsh food map. Watch this space, we willannounce our special plans in the coming weeks.’

The Glanusk Estate continues to embrace amodern, fresh approach to estate management.Harry Legge –Bourke said, ‘It makes perfect sensefor us all to work together again to offer thefantastic quality food which Sean, Glynn and Jess areso well known for. We are all delighted at theirdecision to return to the Nantyffin. The Estate hasdeveloped many new ventures such as the GreenMan Festival, International polo, Outdoor theatreand Concerts and we know that making the mostof this great opportunity to evolve things at TheCider Mill is another exciting element of ourcontinuing growth.”

Letter to your bodyI thought this week I’d get YOU to do some work! Thisis an exercise I developed as part of my Weight & Seelifestyle programme (Nutrition, Exercise, and MindHealth!). Take your time with this and I promise you’llfind it incredible helpful, powerful, and possibly lifechanging. It is very good for those who have a negativebody image. Essentially we are writing TO our bodywhatever we may feel towards it, as if to acknowledgewhat it has been through. I suspect those of a certainage realise how well our bodies actually serve us andhow we have wasted WAY too much time worryingover silly things. What I am HOPING will happen is thatyou'll (in the act of writing), realise what a BLOODYMIRACLE they are and how often the body knowsbest, even when it appears to have let usdown....Guidelines might be (but this is YOUR letter, not mine). Maybe start from birth onwards. i.e: wereyou born with any medical problems? As you got olderdid you excel in any way for which you can thank yourbody? And later in life perhaps: Have you ever abusedyour body in anyway? If so why when and has itrecovered (this might be drugs, starving, overeating, drink etc). What amazes you about your body? Have

you ever had to 'fix' your body in any way (surgery, cosmetic or needed etc). What have you done toimprove your body? Was it worth it or did you obsessunnecessarily? Ha! This is a question we have coveredbefore: Are you unhappy with any part of your body(avalanche!!). Have you learnt to live with this? What itchanging as you get older? Have you ever had theexperience of childbirth? What should you beappreciative of? Are you?!Do you take it for-granted?OR Do you work at it? Have you ever been really ill?Are you over it? What did you learn from it? Do youappreciate how we ARE what we eat - do you thinkyour body is getting the best from you in this sense? And there will be more as you go through the years. Ibet my bottom dollar you’ll remember just what amiracle the body is and I hope you focus less onwobbly bits and more on nourishing this fantasticvehicle of ours.
