Friday 4th and Monday 7th September 2020.
Information regarding the days is in your packs.
If your child wishes to have a school lunch, please make food choices and return the slips to the school office by Friday 10th July. Please do not send in the money with the slip as the money for the lunches need to be with the child on the two induction days.
Induction Day
Children are to walk to Swanmead in the morning where they will come to the hall via the front entrance. Each tutor will be ready to welcome you on that morning. After enjoying a day of discovery and excitement children who are currently year 4s at Greenfylde, you will be held in the hall until they are collected by their parents. This is a difference to previous years. If you currently attend a different school, like Shepton Beauchamp or Ilton then we ask that your parents drop you off in the morning and collect you at the end of both induction days.

This is an example of what your timetable may look like…
The information in this presentation is our current expectation for how we will return to school from Tuesday 8th September
2020. However, this may be subject to change due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. We will keep you informed of any
changes to this information.
Getting to and from school…
The majority of pupils are likely to walk to school and can access the school site through the yellow gates near the Tesco car park or walk around the side of the school as if they were walking to Cygnets.
Children arriving early can play on the KS2 playground and wait for the bell. Mr McMeakin will then invite them in. Next to this playground is where the bike and scooter rack is located.
Getting to and from school… Buses drop the children off at the front of the school and the children are expected to walk around by the Cygnets entrance.
If you are unaware of where your pick up point is in your local community please ask an existing parent/carer of a Swanmead pupil.
At the end of the day children taking a bus home are to wait in lines in the hall ready to be dismissed by a member of staff.
Mobile Phones
Some parents/carers may deem it appropriate for their child to have a mobile phone for the journey to school.
All mobile phones must be switched off and handed in to the office at the start of the school day where they will be locked in a secure cabinet. This is where they can be collected at the end of the school day.
A permission slip must be completed in order for us to allow your child to bring a phone to school.
Locker Rooms
In September you will be notified about the cost and availability of lockers for the new academic year.
All year 5 children will, as was the case in their first schools, have a drawer and a labelled peg to keep their belongings in one place.
Moving around the school… For many of your lessons there are dedicated learning spaces. This means you will be moving around the school on a daily basis. In order for the flow of pupils to move efficiently there are some basic rules for everyone: • No running – ever. • Walk on the left. • Walk quietly. • Line up outside the room you are visiting until you are invited in
by your teacher.
You will need to carry your equipment around with you so a hard shelled folder is ideal as inevitably on occasion things are dropped.
Lunchtimes
In year 5, children are invited into the school hall to have their lunches first. Both cooked and packed lunches eat at the same time. The hall is then required for the older year groups so please don’t spend the whole hour eating. Cooked dinners cost £2.50 for a main course and a dessert. There is a varied selection of food available every day. The canteen works in a style whereby you do not need to pre-order food. There is a water dispenser located at the back of the hall.
Example School Menu Menus refresh seasonally – any GF/dietary requirements please alert the school
Attendance, Medical needs and HUB… The School’s pupil absence number for voicemails is: 01460 52431 and choose option 1. Details of the pupil’s illness must be given. Any child with a long term medical condition will have an individual medical plan created for them by Mrs Harvey in conjunction with the child’s parents and carers. Also, Mrs Harvey can develop short term plans for children requiring them such as a broken collar bone. The HUB is a place which allows children to have a quiet safe space within school where they can share any SEMH issues. This area is also used to develop social skills, coping strategies associated with change and is a bridge between school and home life. If you would like to know more about the HUB, please see the following leaflet: http://swanmeadschool.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Hub-leaflet-for-Open-Evening-FINAL-October-2018.pdf
Extra-Curricular Clubs
Most clubs run at lunchtime from 1:30-2:00pm. A few clubs run after school. These are attended by those invited to do so by staff members e.g. play rehearsals and homework club. A homework club runs every lunchtime in the library. Clubs on offer are updated termly.
Epraise
This is our rewards system at Swanmead. Points are given by any member of staff in response to positive behaviour and learning choices. Accolades are special badges awarded to the children for completing a specific challenge. Each half term a reward day is created to celebrate the achievements of each pupil. These rewards can include: The wearing of non- school Uniform, An afternoon at the park or a visit off the school site.
Planners Planners are the most important book your child will be given as they start Swanmead. It is used as a primary method of communication. You may want to let us know that “Keith” has lost a P.E sock, and we can reply letting you know it has been found. To ensure all messages are seen by both tutors and parents/carers we ask that the planner is signed weekly. The planner is also a place for children to record their homework. This includes the four separate pieces of reading that has to take place with an adult present across the week. We ask that each piece of reading is signed along with details of the pages read as evidence of it actually taking place. At the back of each planner is a selection of pages that are aimed at helping with homework tasks. The planner is also the place for children to record important school information. A school day timetable will be found in the planner, this may help you when writing a note alerting us to the fact that “Keith” may miss art because of a dental appointment. On the first day the children will be given their own personal timetable. This, along with a map, will help your child find where they need to go.
Homework
There will be a maximum of three pieces of work per week from your tutor. This usually comprises of: 1) Reading to an adult on four separate occasions. This should be evidenced in the planner with details of the pages read and an adult’s signature.
2) A set of weekly spellings that have been studied in class. 3) A maths activity to consolidate learning that has taken place in the classroom. All children are given a week to complete these tasks. On occasion your child may be given an additional piece of homework from a subject teacher.
Uniform
Due to the ongoing issues regarding Covid-19, this year we are encouraging parents to purchase school uniform online from the website My Clothing.
Further information about the school uniform requirements and how to order uniform can be accessed here: http://swanmeadschool.co.uk/information-for-parents/school-uniform/
Equipment List There is an essential list found in the planner.
Essential: Pencils, Black or blue handwriting pens, colouring pencils, glue stick, highlighter, rubber, metal pencil sharpener, 30cm ruler. Desirable: Calculator, protractor, purple biro, whiteboard pen Please do not bring any: Gel pens, felt tip pens, Sharpies, Tippex, compass, scissors, novelty stationary. Your child will not be permitted to use any of these items in school.
