The Benefits of Being GroundedDear Friend of Nature,

Being grounded means one thing to ateenager who was out past curfew. Itmeans something totally different forbirds like sparrows. To them, it means"Time to chow down!"

Now is when the population of ground-feeding birds is at its peak. These littlebirds have big appetites to satisfy. That'swhy they are always searching andscratching for all the food they can find.

On extremely cold days, sparrows caneat thousands of weed seeds to maintaina healthy energy balance. With that muchfood to be consumed, it's no surprisethat these birds go after small, easy-to-open seeds, even if larger seeds have ahigher energy content.

And though most sparrows prefer toforage and dine on the ground, many willalso visit feeders for a meal. Manysparrows visit feeders in the earlymorning, because they're extremelyhungry from their overnight fast, andagain late in the day, as they prepare foranother long evening.

You can help your backyard ground-feeders by offering blends with millet, a

seed that most of them enjoy, and bykeeping your feeders filled early andlate in the day. Our SelectGroundfeeder Blend is perfect forbroadcasting. It's packed with lots ofmillet for sparrows, juncos and otherground feeders and is available for alimited time only.

Looking for more ways to enjoy groundfeeding birds? Stop by the store thismonth for more tips on how to makeyour yard the perfect place to begrounded. We hope to see you soon!
