Foreword

The UK’s creative industries continue to be a pacesetter sector in the UK economy, which in 2012 was worth £71.4 billion per year outperforming all other sectors of UK industry and supporting 1.68 million jobs – 5.6 per cent of UK jobs. So without a doubt your efforts here contribute significantly to the children’s media space during Kidscreen.

And the UK Government remains a solid supporter of the innovation economy and is firmly committed to a business friendly environment through multiple tax relief programs to allow for the gold-standard content the creative industry delivers

across various platforms including: animation, video games, theatre and live-action TV.

Finally, as I mentioned last year, I think Miami is a place of creativity and beauty and I know that this location will bring motivation to everybody – from content developers, producers, content buyers broadcasters and innovative executives. Indeed, I am happy that we can again support your business goals and on-going commercial relationships.

I look forward to seeing everybody here and wish each of you a pleasant and successful time in Miami.

David Prodger is Consul General, Miami, Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Thanks to MAGIC for sponsoring the UK@Kidscreen Reception in Miami

I am again delighted to welcome each of you and Kidscreen to the lovely city of Miami. Last year was a success for our delegates and you are instrumental in ensuring that the UK continues to be a global leader in animation, film, television and music. Once more, my team is thrilled to be working with our colleagues from The British Consulate in New York, as well as with our friends at The Children’s Media Conference to support your participation at the Kidscreen Summit. As you know, this event is the most important international event for children’s content and we are pleased that it is hosted here in Florida.

Foreword

Five years on from the first UK@Kidscreen delegation finds the British Kids’ TV, animation and digital media industries fit and ready to do business. Despite the rapid changes in audience habits in the kids’ media marketplace, and ever tightening budgets, UK kids’ producers, and the companies and freelancers who work with them, are taking advantage of government support that makes Britain one of the best places in the world to build creative partnerships and get into the business of kids’ media.

Tax breaks for animation and games have recently been joined by incentives for children’s TV and theatre production. The Animation Tax Relief has seen a massive resurgence in the UK animation sector, with record-breaking levels of production over the last three years. Now the children’s TV tax break is starting to impact on production.

The UK’s record in content development, production, distribution and exploitation is second to none. In the delegation this year there are

companies offering a wide range of television, animation and digital media specialisms, and some who can specifically advise on accessing the tax breaks through partnership with the UK.

Beyond Kidscreen, The Children’s Media Conference organises insight-sharing and market meeting opportunities in the UK. The CMC Animation Exchange on 10 March 2016 will see the British animation industry gather for an assessment of the creative, business and training issues arising from growth.

The UK kids’ media industry is buzzing with new initiatives, new ideas and new takes on old favourites.  Reflecting that confidence, UK producers have turned out in greater numbers than ever for Kidscreen. The delegation has over 60 industry experts including internationally renowned creatives, digital award winners and talented service providers. Britain has long been known for its creativity. Now we can also offer the added allure of tax incentives; record-breaking levels of animation production in Britain have already resulted, and the new tax break for live-action children’s TV means that the UK is a great place to make your show, with UK producers and service providers as great partners.  Come and meet us in the UK ‘zone’ in the main delegate lounge.

The Animation Exchange will be welcoming international guests for the first time in 2016. The CMC Rights Exchange at the London Book Fair on 14 April 2016 brings together literary agents, publishers, producers, broadcasters, interactive producers and the licensing sector for meetings to build new relationships to develop and exploit authors’ IP. The Rights Exchange offers new routes from book to screen and back again, which maximises the multi-platform potential of great properties.

And 5 – 7 July 2016 sees The Children’s Media Conference - the UK’s premier gathering of over 1,000 kids’ media specialists from every genre and every platform for three days of workshops and conference sessions with over 200 experts speakers. Tied to that, Tuesday 5 July sees the CMC International Exchange – the UK’s only marketplace dedicated to uncovering new UK talent, kids’ properties in development and projects seeking funding.

If you think, as we do, that it’s a GREAT time to “meet the Brits” come along to

the UK area in the Kidscreen delegate lounge, meet our array of creative delegates, and talk to us about how further opportunities in the UK can be pursued.

Fun Crew create compelling, original and marketable content for children’s media.

We’re an independent studio based in the northwest of England, founded in 2006 by dynamic partners, Angela Salt and Stuart Harrison. Fun Crew’s passion is for engaging characters, comedy and FUN, story-driven ideas, which will work universally to entertain across media platforms.

Fun Crew are currently developing their adorable, original, 2D animated comedy for 4-7 year olds, ‘Bear, Bud & Boo’, with global partners, Technicolor and Brown Bag Films.

We have an exciting development slate, which includes animated shows for pre-school to teen audiences and great ideas for online, games and publishing. This will be our fifth return to Kidscreen with the UK delegation and we’re looking forward to meeting prospective international co-production partners, broadcasters, producers, publishers, digital media specialists and potential investors.

In addition Angela and Stuart are happy to discuss opportunities to work ‘for hire’ internationally as creative consultants on new or existing projects. Their combined expertise spans writing, development, character design, illustration, art direction and, naturally, FUN IDEAS!

Just Anim8

At Just Anim8 our passion is storytelling. Just Anim8 is a new animation production studio and workshops provider currently developing quirky, vibrant and engaging animated stories for younger viewers. As a social enterprise, we give back to local communities by doing school outreach programmes using animation to develop schoolchildren’s storytelling skills. We currently have two animated TV shows in early development: ‘Flo’s World’ and ‘Stella Steam’.

‘Flo’s World’ is an 11-minute series aimed at 4 – 7 year olds, and is about the wacky adventures of two friends; Flo, a feisty, inquisitive schoolgirl, and Winston, a grouchy, grumbling seashell, as they hop between the real world and the weird and wonderful Flo’s World. They encounter naughty dinosaurs, giant marbles, pirate-

parrots, shape-shifting Afro hair, and coconuts who want to make their own TV ad about chocolate, all the while making sure they hop back home in time for school!

‘Stella Steam’ is a 30-minute series aimed at 8 – 12 year olds, focussing on Stella, a 14 year-old inventor who lives in a world crying out for marvellous inventions. Stella’s abilities catch the attention of a host of characters, and she must use all of her skills to outwit those who would use them for nefarious purposes. The series not only sets out to fascinate children with action, fantasy and fun inventions, but also to challenge gender stereotypes, promote self confidence and problem-solving, and foster interest in the STEAM subjects (Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and how they work together.
