“Having the chance to work outdoors and make a positive impact on the environment is very rewarding,” says Dawson Clermont, a member of the Vancouver Island HSBC Conservation Youth Crew.

“My family has a long history in the conservation field — my dad working in the field for 30 years and my mom on the Garry Oak ecosystem recovery team — so I’ve had a bit of interest in that sort of thing for most of my life.”

The Nature Trust of British Columbia hires crews each summer to tackle a wide variety of conservation activities

on properties across the province and learn valuable skills for future employment. Training includes First Aid and Bear Aware as well as the safe handling of power tools.

On Vancouver Island, the crew has worked on conservation properties from the Nanaimo River Estuary and Buttertubs Marsh to Lazo Marsh in the Comox Valley and the Salmon River Estuary.

As Dawson explains, “I’ve learned a lot about many different species of birds and plants both native and invasive. Being able to perform hands-on field work has really been beneficial to what and how I’ve learned.”

When asked about his most challenging tasks, he says, “Some of the scotch broom removals, especially in wet weather, became a bit difficult as well as the Spartina removal because of the very dense and rocky ground.”

His favourite activities include a long list: “I had a lot of fun with our small building projects,

like constructing foot bridges, installing stairs in trail systems and building drainage components around the many properties. The surveys were also neat, examining various species of birds and turtles.”

The crews perform on-the-ground work as well as attending workshops from specialists in the field on topics such as bird counts, and forest and wetland ecology. They also contribute to the local community in a variety of ways.

“We feel like most of our work contributes to the communities,” Dawson explains. “But in particular we’ve installed many helpful signs, coordinated broom removals, maintained trail systems and many other things that benefit not only these communities but the environment.”

When asked about his future plans, Dawson says, “I recently finished my first year of engineering at UVic, and I’m planning to attend the renewable energy program at Camosun (College). I see renewable energy

The Back Country Horsemen Society of British Columbia (BCHBC) and all equine enthusiasts who enjoy trail riding on Vancouver Island are celebrating new horse-friendly campsites and trails.

More than 25 BCHBC members from across Vancouver Island, along with an additional 40-plus dignitaries and guests, gathered recently to celebrate the official grand opening of the Memekay River site of the Salmon Brewster Equine Campsites and Trail Corridor Project near Sayward.

BCHBC worked with Recreation Sites and Trails BC in Campbell River to have the first Vancouver Island Crown Land equine-friendly public

recreation campsites and trail designated.

“This wonderful facility is an example

of what can happen when people have a vision, when they work in a spirit

of community collaboration, and they put in hundreds of hours of volunteer

effort in order to see that vision become reality,” said Phil Kent, mayor of Duncan and a representative of the Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET), which donated $40,000 to the $107,000 project.

Other major contributors included the Coast Sustainability Trust ($20,000) and Horse Council BC ($10,000). Significant ‘in kind’ donations were also made by the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations ($27,000) and Western Forest Products, as well

as other suppliers and contractors too numerous to list.

The approximately five-acre (two-hectare) Memekay Horse Camp features 11 campsites that are about 70 feet long to accommodate horse trailers and recreational vehicles. Each campsite has two horse corrals, plus there is a group shelter with picnic tables.

Other amenities include outhouses, manure containment

areas and non-potable water for horses. The 1.5-acre (.5-hectare) Brewster Horse Camp is more open camping and has two larger corrals.

The Salmon Brewster Trail Corridor — a 40-kilometre trail through working forest and along historic railroad logging road grades — will connect the two campsites.

While the campsites are completed and

as another form of conservation, and with any luck will be working alongside NGO’s like The Nature Trust.”

In 2013, HSBC Conservation Youth Crews are operating on Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland, South Okanagan, East

Kootenay, and Peace River. The Nature Trust is pleased to have HSBC Bank Canada as the title sponsor of the HSBC Conservation Youth Crew Program for the eighth year. Other sponsors include BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Ducks Unlimited

Canada, the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, HRSDC, Shell Canada, and The Tony Cartledge Fund.

As a leading non profit land conservation organization, the Nature Trust of British Columbia is dedicated to protecting B.C.’s natural

diversity of plants and animals through the acquisition and management of critical habitats.

Since 1971, the Nature Trust along with its partners has invested more than $80 million to secure over 70,000 hectares (173,000 acres) across B.C.

5x10

Fishing Corner2x14parts of the trail

corridor are open, there is still work to be done to upgrade and clear the overgrown trail corridor.

In this region, trail maintenance will be ongoing and managed by BCHBC volunteers.

The project was the dream of retired rancher Rick Phye of Black Creek (formerly of Sayward) and riding companion Gerald Whalley, who

is also from Sayward and is the electoral area director of the Strathcona Regional District.

Over the past five years, Phye and Whalley have dedicated countless hours to scouting, riding and walking the Salmon Brewster Trail.

They have slashed through brush and painstakingly established GPS coordinates in an effort to produce trail maps and make it accessible

to advanced level riders.

The next phase will include trail improvements for all levels of riders to be able to enjoy the trail.

John King, past chair of the North Vancouver Island (NVI) chapter of BCHBC said Phye was persistent in his efforts to get Back Country Horsemen on board with the project.

“Rick had the vision of turning this area into an

equestrian trail and campsite facility to take advantage of the wonderful scenery and opportunities for equestrian use that this area offers. At first, due to the shear magnitude of the project, we declined his offer … but in 2010 we said ‘Let’s do it!’ ”

The project was three years in development and included extensive biological and archaeological assessments. In

addition to securing various grants, community support and fundraising from BCHBC’s North Island Chapter, volunteers dedicated more than 1,100 hours of work, assisting with everything from trail clearing to corral construction and grant applications.

For more information, visit the Trails section at www.bchorsemen.org or call Sharon Pickthorne at 250-337-1818.

Fishing is still strong in most areas from Courtenay to Port Hardy and the catch reports indicate that the bite could be even better as we head into September. At the Tyee pool in Campbell River I counted more than 30 boats in the water last Wednesday and the evening hours between 7 and 830 pm has been productive.

Some springs 24.5 pounds have been coming in. The leader at the moment is Mike Gage with a 61.5 pound Tyee,Gael Arthur has a 46.5,Robin Modesto 42.5 and Ken Enns 40.5.

The pinks have been coming in on a regular basis from all areas from Browns Bay, To Sayward, and in the Campbell River area. River shing in the upper pools of the Cambell River and The

areas between the bridges has been quite active. Local

angler Bob Gordon has been out and had a chance to talk with Ralph Shaw who made a visit to the Campbell River.

Twin lakes and Fry has been very good for trout and as the weather starts to cool the local lakes will be busy on the weekend with recreational anglers. The Roberts Lake family fun shing derby is on Saturday September 21st and with the turnout last year and the number of sh being caught, this year is expected to be better with more anglers and more prizes. Host Lorna Duncan puts on a feed of hotdogs and lemonade and I will be hosting the derby for the second year. The lake has a number of small trout and a report of a 4 pounder was caught on the south end of Roberts Lake.

Like the rest of our bodies, our eyes are not immune to the symptoms of aging.

Starting from the age of about 40, you’re apt to experience a number of vision changes. Here’s a sample of what to expect as your eyes age:

Presbyopia – After about age 40, it becomes inevitably and progressively more difficult to focus on small or very near

print. Eventually, some

sort of corrective lenses will be required, such as reading glasses or multifocals. Surgical options are also available, which you can discuss with your optometrist.

Cataracts – According to the Mayo Clinic, about half of all 65-year-old Americans have cataracts, and that figure rises with age. Fortunately, modern

cataract surgery is extremely safe and effective.

However, any cataract formation should be addressed before it becomes too advanced, so make sure you tell your optometrist about any changes in your vision.

Macular degeneration – the

leading cause of blindness worldwide.

See your optometrist immediately if you notice any blurriness in your central vision or any change in your sensitivity to light or colours.

Glaucoma – The risk of developing glaucoma increases

from about one per cent in your 40s to 12 per cent in your 80s.

Diabetic retinopathy – With a rising prevalence of diabetes, many more people are experiencing diabetes-related vision loss as they enter their senior years.

It’s been estimated that 30 per cent of diabetics haven’t been diagnosed – another reason to report any vision issues to your

optometrist.Several other

conditions are frequently experienced by aging eyes, including dry eyes, loss of peripheral vision, decreased colour perception and otherwise harmless spots, “floaters” or flashes of light (although such flashes could also signal a detached retina, which could lead to blindness).

The best way to

reduce your risk of developing any of these conditions is to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, and to have your eyes checked at least annually by an optometrist.

Dr. Alex Kennedy is an optometrist with Mosaic Vision Care in Courtenay. To make an appointment, call him 250-334-4512 or visit www.mosaicvisioncare.com.

A ban on anonymous contributions in municipal elections is among the reforms the provincial government is pledging to have in place the next time local voters go to the polls to elect councils in November of 2014.

Details on the changes are to be spelled out in a white paper next month.

But Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes said additional changes will also require disclosure and registration of third-party advertisers in local government elections.

Sponsorship information will also be mandatory on all election advertising, and campaign finance disclosures will have to be filed within 90 days, instead of 120 days.

Limits on campaign spending for candidates, organizations and third-party advertisers are also coming, but they will be held back for implementation for the 2017 elections in order

Does your partner give you the support you need?

It’s natural to expect emotional support from the person to whom you’re closest.

This is initially what sends many people to a counsellor – to seek the support they’re not getting from their partner.

While there are many reasons why your partner may not be supportive (or why

you perceive that he or she is not supportive), knowing the reason why doesn’t necessarily resolve the issues of resentment, loneliness, lack of connectedness and isolation.

Many couples struggle with a lack of support and emotional connection even when they’re together.

Support is multidimensional, as it requires energy to be given from the emotional, mental,

physical and spiritual realm.

It also requires each individual to accept that they are worthy of receiving support. If either partner is blocked in either fluid direction, both will feel “the void.”

Relationships strengthen when

couples learn how to support one another.

Both partners need to feel that they are a high priority in the relationship.

When one feels down, the other must learn to assist, encourage and provide care as needed.

Supporting one another is done through direct

communication and is built upon a fluid, give-and-take progression. This process of giving and receiving is what directly supports your partner and inevitably leads to a happy, fulfilling relationship.

Support, however, must also be available outside the relationship.

In a 2006 study, 19 per cent of individuals stated that their spouse was their sole confidant.

As a counsellor, this concerns me because it means that when couples split up, nearly one in five people will be without their sole source of emotional support.

This is why, just as it’s important to have the support of your partner, it’s equally important to have a strong external support network as well.

Danielle Lambrecht is a clinical counsellor specializing in couples

counselling, mental health and addictions. She can be reached at 250-898-9847 or online at www.

The province is also expected to push municipal campaigns up one month, to run in the third week of October starting

Trevor Greene is a journalist,

elite athlete and Canadian soldier brutally injured during a posting to Afghanistan in 2006.

An axe blow to Trevor’s skull resulted in a severe brain injury that was predicted to leave him in a permanent, vegetative state. This prediction could not have been further from the remarkably successful recovery that followed.

Seven years later, now living in Nanaimo, Trevor, along with his wife Debbie and team of therapists, has worked tirelessly to find a way back.

The key to Trevor’s recovery is something called neuroplasticity—the brain’s inherent ability to alter its circuits to wire and rewire itself. Utilizing his elite athlete training experience, Trevor spends hours every day training to compensate for the damage. Four years after his injury, he was able to speak type, sit up and stand—an amazing recovery for someone who was told he would never be able to function again.

Trevor’s recovery became the focus of a research study that included the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Working in partnership with by Dr. Stephen Lindsay, a professor in the department of psychology at UVic and Dr. Ryan D’Arcy, a B.C. Leadership Chair in medical technology at Simon Fraser University and Surrey Memorial Hospital, the Health

Authority provided the technology and expertise necessary to conduct research.

After learning about Trevor Greene through the media in late 2009, Dr. Ryan D’Arcy, then leading the National Research Council’s Institute for Biodiagnostics in Halifax, and UVic’s Dr. Stephen Lindsay came together to work with the Greenes on a research project to measure Trevor’s progress over the course of three years in order to capture Trevor’s example within the context of neuroscientific study. They approached the Vancouver Island Health Authority to

ask them to partner on the project to provide access to a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine and the highly skilled technical staff necessary to undertake this project. The study used functional MRI to measure activation changes in Trevor’s brain as he progressed in his goals to regain

movement. “It was crucial to the success of the project that we had access to an fMRI and the skilled staff to run it,” said Lindsay. “The Vancouver Island Health Authority was a key partner in this project by providing both.”

Trevor Greene was not only the subject of this research study,

he helped shape the project by working with the researchers to determine what to measure (leg movement was chosen,

as walking is Trevor’s ultimate goal).

Trevor also suggested they measure visualization, taking images of his brain

as he visualized rowing. Trevor was a competitive rower with thousands of hours of rowing behind

him, so imagining this activity is as natural as breathing.

In functional MRI, the MRI system measures activation changes in the brain and shows the parts of Trevor’s brain involved in movement.

By monitoring this, the evidence clearly shows that Trevor’s intensive therapy and visualization bring changes in his brain activity while he regains his physical abilities.

When the research began, Trevor had to be hoisted in a sling

from his wheelchair to the MRI bed, but by the time it ended, he was able, with help from Debbie, to stand, pivot and sit on the bed.

Moreover, he is practising walking at his home in Nanaimo. Trevor’s MRI scans show greatly increased brain activity over the same time, and, interestingly, he activates the same regions when he visualizes rowing, a discovery that is catching the attention of many rehabilitation professionals.

“This is an important discovery,”

said Lindsay. “It demonstrates, consistent with other research, that the brain has the capacity to recover and that the brain can reorganize itself to help where needed.”

The results of this research are currently being prepared for publication, to ensure that the discoveries are widely available to brain injury experts around the world.

“While we have a growing appreciation of the brain’s plasticity—its ability to relearn, rewire and adapt—the brain injury community’s

ability to apply that information to patients is in its early stages,” added D’Arcy.

This research would not have been possible without the partnership between organizations, and just as importantly, the role of the participants in shaping the research. “People may not realize it, but research is essential to the ability to provide the best care for patients,” noted Lindsay.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority conducts a wide range of health research studies designed to answer

important questions. Knowledge gained from this research can then be applied to improve the quality of care and quality of life for residents of Vancouver Island and beyond.

Currently involved in more than 250 research projects, VIHA is actively developing partnerships with world-class research institutions like the University of Victoria and Royal Roads University.

“Our goal is to expand our research capacity by working with partners; we are

also looking at ways to better engage the public and our patients in the research process,” says Cindy Trytten, research director for VIHA. “It’s an exciting time for research on Vancouver Island.”

Trevor Greene and his family live in Nanaimo, where Trevor is now able to walk around his home using mobility devices. Trevor and Debbie have written a book about this experience titled “March Forth: The Inspiring True Story of a Canadian Soldier’s Journey of Love, Hope and

Survival.” Visit www.

marchforth.ca for more information.

Patient use is a priority; the MRI was only used during off-hours so that no patient testing was displaced for this research, and the researchers’ grants covered the costs associated with this project.

Moreover, this project nicely illustrates how an individual can simultaneously be a patient, a research participant and a member of a research team.
