____________________________________________________ The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic Tradition. Continuing in this long-standing practice, you can remember someone who has died recently or many years ago. Intentions do not have to be just for the dead. They make beautiful gifts for any special occasion. To schedule a Mass intention, call or visit the parish office.____________________________________________________

The two principle offices of Jesus in His mortal life were those of Savior and Teacher. Jesus in the crib is silent; Jesus in the Tabernacle is silent. Hidden and mute He gives Himself in sacrifice to the Father for poor sinners. He is silent because it is better to be silent. Silence is more pleasing to the august Trinity than the harmonies of all concerts of angels. His silence is of more benefit to to the intelligence and heart of man, than the wise words of all the most gifted teachers. Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is the shortest and most complete catechism. Here He teaches the whole moral code. The entire Decalogue is comprised of one word: GIVE! Above all, give love to God, give all to your neighbhor, without asking any return-every day, every hour, for the Glory of God.

… Go forth among men and bear witness to Jesus Christ—giving, loving and silent.

____________________________________________________PRAYERS FOR VOCATIONSLord Jesus, your Mother Mary continues to shine as one who fully responded to God’s call. May young people throughout the world be graced to follow her example of doing God’s will in their lives. Help them understand the joy that comes from serving God and others. Amen

____________________________________________________ Today’s reading from Isiah describes the Israelites bringing their offering to the Lord: in clean vessels.” The gift of myself—patient endurance and fidelity to the will of God—is as important as the monetary gift I offer.____________________________________________________FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar The phrase in today’s gospel, “I don’t know where you come from,” is often used by parents about children and children about parents. Change is so rapid one generation has little in common with another. We depend on love, trust, and mutual respect to bridge this gap. ____________________________________________________ Grief Support Group will meet the first Thursday of the month at 12:45 in the Family Center. Next meeting will be on Sept. 5. If you would like more information call Marsha at 269-367-4403.

Knights of Columbus will meet Tuesday, September 10 at 7 PM in the Family Center.

As many of you know from past issues of the Faith magazine, our diocese has launched an Our Shepherds, Our Future Capital Campaign to raise funds for seminarian formation and clergy retirement. The bulk of the funds,

$29,000,000 will go into 2 funds for the seminarians. Another $2,000,000 will go to supplement the diocesan retired priest fund. Last April, the Faith magazine gave us the funding broken down by parishes. A small group of 8 parishes ran their campaign last spring and early summer. Of the remaining parishes, half will run this winter and half next spring. We are in the half that will run our campaign this winter. Specifically, November 2019 – February 2020.

Now the hard news. For Saint Edward, our amount is $182,500. Yes, it’s a lot. After I got over the shock, I began to think about it. Then I began to think. Can we not then raise $182,500 over the next three years for this campaign? When I mentioned this in a meeting, once they got over their surprise and we talked a little while, one of the men mentioned we could do this. The more I thought about it the more I am sure we can. The question for us is not if we can, it is do we want to do this?

So, is this worth it? There are of course many reasons for why this is most certainly well worth our efforts. We very clearly need Mass and Holy Communion. We need Baptisms for our children, Marriage for our young people, Anointing of the Sick for our ill families, and funerals for our deceased. We need an explanation of the Scriptures and Reconciliation when we fall away. And we clearly don’t want to get in our cars and drive 40, 60 or more miles trying to find a priest. We want one in our own parish.

God has blessed us with men seeking to respond to His call to leave everything and follow Him. As Catholics we seek to help them say “Yes” to God.

Will you do this? Give it some prayerful thought.

God bless you!Fr. Tom

An example of this was how one always bowed their heads when passing the church and said a little prayer. However, we were urged never to pass the church without stopping in for a visit……… Whenever I pass the church, I stop in for a visit for fear that when they carry me in Our Lord will say “Who is it?”

…… In those days many of the men wore hats and they lifted these or tipped them as they passed the church as a sign of reverence for the presence of the Eucharist. The church bells were rung at noon and those within hearing distance said the Angelus as a family prayer. These traditions made our faith a constant presence in our daily life. So many children (and adults) today do not really feel the presence of Christ in their home or in their church. Possibly that is why so many dash into church and tumble into the pew without going down on their knee in reverence to the Eucharistic presence. Parents have to set the example here for our children to realize that our church is not just a building with pretty windows, but is truly the house of God and that His presence deserves our respect and love. A simple “I Love you Jesus” or “Good morning, Lord” might help us, as we genuflect, to focus on His presence.
