WE HONOR OUR VETERANS On Veterans Day we honor men and women who have served and sacrificed in one of America’s quest for world peace and our nation’s desire for justice and freedom throughout the world--our nation’s higher goals. Veterans Day is actually rooted in Armistice Day. On November 11, 1918, America and her allies met with German leaders to sign a truce ending World War I. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson decided that our nation should remember with gratitude the end of that war and honor those who served in the military. He called the holiday, Armistice Day. Armistice means “truce.” In his proclamation the president wrote that Armistice Day was an opportunity...given to America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.” The name Armistice Day was kept until 1954 when Congress changed the name to Veterans Day honoring veterans of every era. President Eisenhower called on all citizens to observe the day remembering the sacrifices of veterans and “the task of promoting an enduring peace.”ΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩ

From The Pastor’s Desk A Pastor Paragraph for October 2017 “For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Every time I read those words from Ecclesiastes that old 60’s song comes to mind and I find myself saying; “Turn, turn, turn”. This time of the year is a reminder, as the days get shorter, and the nights get colder, that here in Pennsylvania, seasons change.

But, as we move into the days of autumn, take the time to appreciate what’s happening around you. Look up at the clearness of the sky. See the beauty and color of the fall foliage. Enjoy some time outdoors when the temperature feels just right.

How beautiful, O Lord, are the works of your creation.Yes, the seasons do change, but praise God, isn’t it wonderful when they do?

See you Sunday,

Pastor SteveA Pastor Paragraph for November 2017 “’Then Lord’, Simon Peter replied, ‘not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well!’” John 13:9

I love the sound of laughter. It’s a universal language in itself. Weather it comes from a good joke, the telling of a story or a memory shared, laughter brings us all closer together.

When I reminisce on past Thanksgiving celebrations, it’s the laughter that I remember most; even more than the food. Laughter with my family felt like love.

Even Jesus at his Last Supper, had to of cracked a smile as Peter expressed his willingness to have a bath in place of his foot washing. The moment lightened the mood on what was obviously going to be a night of sorrow for them all.

Bishop Tom Bickerton use to say: “Lighten up, loosen up and have a little fun.”

With the holidays approaching, too often we get hung up and stressed out as we try and make a little more cash, prepare all the wonderful food and run around trying to get in all the holiday shopping.

But I suggest, as we go into the holidays—starting with Thanksgiving_-that we seek out the joy of coming together as families and appreciate the laughter that we share. And most of all, thank God for one another.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Steve ¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶

Pastor’s Report for September 2017 for the CV: Albright/Springfield: Pleasant Hill Charge

“I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plan’s to give you a hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

O the beauty of the word, “plans”. God is plotting for our good. In all the setbacks and slipups, he is ordaining the best for our futures. Just imagine that every event of our days are designed to draw us closer toward our God and our destiny. Whatever we are facing in life, we will get through it as long as we courageously believe and accept God’s vision for this life. When people try to lessen our value and discard us, we can stand strong and say, “God will use this for his good.” When those we love the most betray our trust and love, we can get up on our feet and declare, “God will recycle this pain”. Many things may cause us to stumble, but we will not fall if we trust that God has a plan for us. This summer has certainly seen its share of ups and downs. In May we all felt that we were on, if nothing else, some sure footing, as attendance began to become more regular and the churches seemed to be in a place to weather the long summer days. But, this summer has seen many challenges as attendance dropped in both churches, cost have risen and we struggled with filling these months with meaningful ministries. And yet, during these months of summer I saw signs of hope and felt that God is about to do great things in our midst. Along with regular visitations and social gatherings like the 55 and over luncheon, I was able to attend this year’s Annual Conference at Grove City and greet our new bishop, Rev. Cynthia Moore-Koikoi. She set her agenda for the upcoming years calling for a unified church, the dismantling of racism and an initiative that focuses on camping ministries. I attended with Ray Knopsnider who was our Districts representative and Jessica Tony who represented the charge (her first year). Albright held its VBS at the end of June. Pleasant Hill sold 200 subs as a fundraiser for $6 each. July saw the VBS program at Pleasant Hill and a beautiful VBS program followed by a church picnic. They even had a bike parade, it was a great time. In August I had the humbling and heartwarming experience of feeding the homeless and impoverished in Pittsburgh with our youth group. Later in the month I enjoyed an impromptu corn roast with the folks of Pleasant Hill, I only wish I could have ate more, it was delicious. As a charge we collected school supplies that I delivered to Crawford Elementary. I also became a member of the District Board of Ordained Ministries. In September, Albright held its outdoor worship service and picnic, started back with Saturday Morning Special and Men’s breakfast. We also welcomed a new District Superintendent, Rev. Robert Zilhaver. Albright will also be celebrating their 119th Anniversary on Sept. 24th . Bible Study begins this month as well. PPRC recommended that the pastor’s salary be in line with the recommendations from the Conference Committee on Equitable Compensation and approved a 3% increase in salary. Both churches completed their Nominations reports. Fund raisers are being scheduled to help in offsetting some increased cost, and plans are set to begin the work on a handicap accessible bathroom in the upstairs of the Albright church. Laity Sunday will be October 15th as well as Pastor Appreciation Sunday and our Charge Conference will be October 24th at 7:30 (Albright) followed by a meeting with the PPRC. The goal I have set for myself in the upcoming months is to truly concentrate our efforts as the churches of our Lord Jesus Christ to make disciples for the transformation of the world. We can do this, because God has a plan.

FIVE REASONS FOR GOING TO CHURCH:

1. It’s the only organization that still deals with issues like salvation, death, judgment, grace, purpose, heaven, and hell.2. It adds value and dignity to human life. We live in a secular culture that contributes to our sense of inner worthlessness. The church counteracts this negative message by preaching God’s love and acceptance.3. It provides a moral and spiritual compass. Society has revised, resisted, and rejecteed absolutes, embracing relativism, but the church stands on the timeless bedrock of God’s Word.4. It’s where you find compassion, healing, and community. There - we’re all on par. There - God’s Spirit is working to knit us together as believers, guaranteeing us all “equal access to the Father” (Eph. 2:18).5. Unlike other institutions, it has motivated the most lasting, unselfish, essential, courageous endeavors on earth. Things like missions, schools, hospitals, food pantries rehab centers, and orphanages. Why go to church? Because Jesus loves the church - and so should you.
