COLLEGE INFORMATION

Enniscorthy Vocational College has a long and very successful tradition of providing Further Education to students from County Wexford and surrounding areas. We encourage students to develop their full potential. Through study, projects and experience of work in your area we hope to foster in each student self-confidence and ability for further life choices. As an educational establishment we are constantly striving to ensure the highest standards of educational attainment for our students.

Over the years the college has taken the initiative in introducing new courses and developing new links with third level establishments at home and abroad, thereby providing many opportunities for students to continue with their education to a very high level. Every year students are selected from a variety of courses to travel to Vasteras, Sweden for three weeks work placement in their chosen area of study. This excellent initiative is part of the Erasmus plus Mobility project organised by Leargas.

For students wishing to go directly into employment or those striving to advance to third level studies, I would have no hesitation in recommending any of the courses that are on offer.

qqI – qUALITY AND qUALIFICATIONS OF IRELAND On november 6th 2012, Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) www.qqi.ie was established as a new integrated agency replacing FETAC (Further Education Training and Awards Council), hETAC (higher Education Training and Awards Council), and nQAI (national Qualifications Authority of Ireland). Awards and qualifications formerly made by FETAC continue to be recognised, because they are on the national Framework of Qualifications. If you are enrolled on a programme leading to a FETAC award, your award will now be made by QQI, under FETAC processes.

www.evc.furthereducation.ie

10

GENERAL INFORMATION

All FETAC courses at EVCFE are authenticated and validated by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). QQI is the statutory body with the responsibility for delivery and awarding of qualifications associated with courses within the national Framework of Qualifications within a range of 10 levels, with the Leaving Certificate at level 5 and an honours degree of study at level 8.Most of the courses at EVCFE are at Level 5 with the exception of Early Childhood Care and Education which is at Level 6 as well as 5. Hairdressing is a two year course that leads to a City and Guilds award (Diploma in Womens Hairdressing/ Diploma in Gents Barbering). There are a number of qualifications for Beauty Therapy, which is also a two year course, including I.T.E.C. (International Therapy Examination Council), C.I.B.T.A.C. (Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology) and C.I.D.E.S.C.O. (Comite International d’Esthetique et de Cosmetologie). International Travel and Tourism also leads to an Advanced diploma in International Travel Industry Studies. EVCFE has a variety of progression routes which are explained on the website pages of the different courses.

CERTIFICATION:To receive the QQI Level 5 Major award, a minimum of eight modules must be completed successfully. A module is an individual course involving intensive treatment of a particular subject through lectures, practical instruction, experimental work and/or individual presentations. All students will as part of their module obligations complete a body of work usually in the form of terminal examinations and continuous assessments/assignments. A portion of the modules final mark will be individually awarded for the terminal exams and assignments respectively.

GRADES:For QQI, the work is assessed in terms of four grade categories. The four grade categories are: Pass, Merit, distinction and Unsuccessful. Below explains the grading system:Pass: 50-64% Merit: 65-79%Distinction: 80-100% Unsuccessful: Below 50%

GENERAL INFORMATION

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING:The national Framework of Qualifications forms the basis of a new, more flexible and integrated system of qualifications. The need for such a system arises in the main from the national objective of moving towards a ‘lifelong learning society’ in which learners will be enabled to take up learning opportunities at chosen stages throughout their lives.

PRIOR LEARNING ENCOMPASSES: 1. Formal Learning, which takes place through programmes of study or training,

delivered by education or training providers which attract awards.2. Non-formal learning that takes place alongside the main streams of education

and training. It may be assessed but does not normally lead to certification. Examples of non-formal learning are: learning and training activities undertaken in the workplace, voluntary sector or trade union and community based learning.

3. Informal learning that takes place through life and work experience (and is sometimes referred to as experiential learning). Often, it is learning that is unintentional and the learner may not recognise at the time of the experience that it contributed to his/her knowledge, skills and competences.

EVCFE in conjunction with FETAC (QQI) is committed to implementing the RPL Policy to enable assess to our courses for all learners. This involves an evaluation of all the individuals learning to date so as to determine their capacity to participate on their chosen course.

PROGRESSION ONTO THIRD LEVEL

FETAC/qqI CERTIFICATE:This scheme provides for the scoring of applicants presenting FETAC (QQI) examination results. The scored results are entered into the CAO system in the normal way. FETAC (QQI) has introduced a new awards system known as the Common Awards System, or CAS. All FETAC (QQI) awards have been part of CAS since 2014. As a result, a new scoring system for FETAC (QQI) awards has applied for entry through CAO to higher education since 2013. This scoring system will apply to all relevant FETAC (QQI) level 5 and level 6 awards listed on the CAO and higher education institution website.

RULES FOR ELIGIBILITY:1. Progression is on the basis of achieving a level 5 or level 6 major award, with a

minimum credit value of 120. Component awards, or achievement of less than 120 credits, will not suffice.

2. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that their FETAC (QQI) registered centre applies to FETAC (QQI) for a major award prior to application to CAO.

3. A major award may be achieved over more than one year. Waterford Institute of Technology requires that an applicant’s major award must be achieved and/or scored in a single sitting i.e. over one certification year, between 1st August and 31st July.

4. In addition some programmes in higher education require achievement of specified component awards, specific grades in individual component awards, or additional awards such as mathematics. Applicants are advised to confirm details of any specific requirements with the Admissions Office of the individual higher education institution. details may also be found in the FETAC (QQI) section of the CAO website.

Progression onto Third Level

EVCFE PROSPECTUS

13 SCORING PROCESS:Each level 5 and level 6 component is scored as follows:

Distinction: 3.333 points Merit: 2.222 points Pass: 1.111 points

This is then multiplied by the individual component credit value to a maximum 120 credits, a total of 400 points. For components with a credit value of less than 5 credits, multiply the credit value by 15.

Components leading to the best 120 credits are scored and applicants are ranked accordingly. The best 120 credits come from minor awards achieved with the highest grades.

The transcript for major awards lists the award code and title, grade and date of achievement for individual components required for the major award, and for any components achieved in any other certification period. FETAC (QQI) forwards all relevant results achieved by applicants to the CAO.

Some applicants will combine components achieved prior to the introduction of CAS with others which are part of CAS. The scoring is managed by CAO according to the systems above. Level 5 and level 6 Certificates achieved before the introduction of CAS are also scored according to the system outlined above. The maximum number of points that can be obtained is 400. FETAC (QQI) results cannot be added to Leaving Certificate points. Where applicants have taken both exams, the higher points will be considered for rating purposes.Applications must be made through the CAO by the 1st February.

I completed the course in 2009 and I am currently working in a Montessori

setting full time. Throughout my two years in the course

I found my lecturers very accommodating and

supportive and as a mother of a 8 year old daughter I found the course very

flexible and fitting with my life and needs. I would urge anybody that’s interested in becoming an early educator

to apply for this course as it can open doors, either

through a stepping stone to future learning, or like me to a full time position in a

childcare setting.

I remember the first day I turned up for lectures, one man amongst thirty or so women. However everyone that I met was so friendly and the lecturers made me feel so welcome, which in turn encouraged me to stay. The course itself was intense and very interesting. Along with one good friend that I had met there, Noreen Byrne we enrolled in Wexford Campus and studied Applied Social Studies. I am glad to say that we have now successfully completed our degree. For me the most important issue was to gain full time employment which I have now successfully secured. I feel I would never have accomplished this without studying at EVCFE. Thank you everyone at EVCFE.

I really enjoyed my year and the course was excellent. For my work experience during the course I went to SULZER LTD in Wexford. I worked with the toolmakers and with the maintenance team there. A short time after, I was hired as a toolmaker. I am currently in my second year at the Institute of Technology in Sligo. My year spent at the EVCFE has been very beneficial to me in the career I have chosen and I would once again highly recommend the course.
