Iron supplements including iron injections are widely used in racing, breeding, endurance and sport horses. Higher haemoglobin (Hb) levels of 16-18 g/dL are regarded as desirable for event, racing and sport horses3.

Increased oxygen transport from lungs to muscles contributes to athleticism and sustained muscular activity3.

High haemoglobin concentrations are important to achieve top racing results. The increased physical activity of racing and sport horses is associated with increased iron requirements. Long periods of strenuous exercise and racing depletes iron reserves resulting in iron deficiency4.
