6th Sunday of the Year
With the Ash Wednesday on 17th February, we begin our Lent this year. The 40 days
lent has actually 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. So then, how is it 40?
Some interprets this way: There are 6 Sundays in between. Sundays in Lent aren’t
counted in the forty days, because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter” and the
reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.
Whatever is the interpretation and explanation, let us look into the spirit of 40 days
in the Bible.
References of 40 days in the Bible
1. 40 days of flood - Noah’s Ark - Light and life inside the Ark and death, darkness
and destruction outside the Ark. Let us build a spiritual ark during this Lenten
season and experience the light and life of God’s saving power.
2. Period of embalming- “Joseph commanded the physicians in his service to
embalm his father’s body. Physicians took 40 days to embalm Israel’s
body” (Gen 50:1-3). Let us embalm our spiritual life with Christ during this
Lenten season, so that we may live forever through him with him and in him.
3. Period of staying with the Lord- “Moses stayed there with the Lord 40 days and
nights, eating and drinking nothing” (Ex 34:28). Fasting and prayer
4. The journey of people of Israel from Egypt to the Promised Land – 40 years. –
Our spiritual journey.
5. Exploring and spying the land – “At the end of forty days they returned from
spying out the land” (Numb 13:25-26). Know yourself and love your creation.
6. Enemy’s call – “Goliath challenged the Israelites every morning and evening for
40 days” (1 Sam 17:16). Challenging of dark powers and trusting in the mercy of
God.
7. Elijah – “Elijah got up and ate and drank then he went in the strength of that food
for 40 days and 40 nights to Mount Horeb” (1Kg 19:5-9). Holy Communion our
spiritual nourishment. “I am the Bread of Life”.
8. Jonah 34-9 – Jonas preached and the people of Nineveh repented and did penance
for 40 days. – Prayer and Repentance during this season.
9. 40 days of purification of our Lady, 40 days of Jesus life in the wilderness and 40
days of the Risen Lord before the Ascension.

Stations of the Cross every Friday
Our Stations of the Cross during the Lenten season begins on 19th February at
5.30 pm. The Holy Mass starts at 5.00 pm every Friday which is followed by
the Stations of the Cross. Praying the Stations of the Cross can be a great
Lenten activity for many reasons, especially for those of us who are suffering in
one way or another. Come and attend the Stations of the Cross and it can be
really a solid start to a great Lent.

First Reading
RESPONSORIAL PSALM
R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble,
and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Happy the man whose offence is forgiven,
whose sin is remitted.
imputes no guilt,
my guilt I did not hide.
I said: 'I will confess
my offence to the Lord.'
And you, Lord, have forgiven
the guilt of my sin. R.
Rejoice, rejoice in the Lord,
exult, you just!
O come, ring out your joy,
all you upright of heart. R.
A reading from the book of Leviticus 13:1–2, 44–46
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 'If a swelling or scab or shiny spot appears on a
man's skin, a case of leprosy of the skin is to be suspected. The man must be taken to
Aaron, the priest, or to one of the priests who are his sons.
'The man is leprous: he is unclean. The priest must declare him unclean; he is suffering
from leprosy of the head. A man infected with leprosy must wear his clothing torn and
his hair disordered; he must shield his upper lip and cry, "Unclean, unclean." As long
as the disease lasts he must be unclean; and therefore he must live apart; he must live
outside the camp.'
SECOND Reading
A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians 10:31 – 11:1 Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone - to Jews or Greeks or to the Church of God; just as I try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for my own advantage but for the advantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Gospel acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people.
Alleluia!
GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 1:40–45
A leper came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees: 'If you want to' he said 'you can cure me.' Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. 'Of course I want to!' he said. 'Be cured!' And the leprosy left him at once and he was cured. Jesus immediately sent him away and sternly ordered him, 'Mind you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing prescribed by Moses as
evidence of your recovery.' The man went away, but then started talking about it freely and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but had to stay outside in places where nobody lived. Even so, people from all around would come to him. Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

VISION STATEMENT
As Disciples of Christ, we are a faith-filled, inclusive, connected Catholic family
committed to grow, worship and serve.
MISSION
To be a welcoming Church using its talents in Ministries
to develop our Parish focusing on our spiritual growth.
Leprosy was considered to be highly contagious and so lepers were banned from living in normal communities and were outcast from
family and from society. To be labelled a 'leper' in those days was to be alienated and rejected.
Can you think of some people today who are considered different or dangerous and are banned from normal social
interaction?
If one of these people approached you today and asked, “Do you want to help me?” would your response be,
'Of course I do'?
Preparing to hear God’s word If you had the power to help anyone in any way, what would you do? Try to do three acts of kindness this week!
The gospel story A man with leprosy, a serious and contagious skin disease, came to Jesus. He knew that Jesus had the power to heal him, and he begged Jesus to make him well. Did Jesus want to cure the man? Of course he did! Jesus put his hand on the man, and at once the leprosy disappeared.
Jesus asked the man not to tell anyone about this, but the man was so overjoyed that he told many people and talked about it everywhere. Although Jesus couldn’t go openly into the towns anymore, people still came to him from everywhere, eager to be near Jesus and to experience his healing.
Readings & Commentaries
Most of us at some time in our lives know the pain of being excluded, shut out, cut off. We feel the hurt deep inside. The wish to belong is one of the most powerful human desires. Alone we can wither and die. No wonder that belonging is a central theme in the Judaeo-Christian scriptures. It is an especially vivid feature of the ministry of Jesus. He is constantly welcoming, inclusive and hospitable. The tragic irony is that his open-hearted acceptance of all people, especially those who had been cast aside by either secular or religious authorities, led to his own exclusion and execution. Today we hear how Jesus is prepared to exchange places with an outcast. The leper he touches and cures is free to take his place in society while Jesus is forced to move out to uninhabited territory. Jesus’ eventual death outside the city breaks down the barriers that keep us apart. We are true disciples of his to the extent that we do everything that we can to welcome all to the table of life.

ASH WEDNESDAY MASS 17 February 2021 Blessing of Ashes Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), let us humbly ask God our Father that he be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes, which we will put on our heads in penitence. O God, who are moved by acts of humility and respond with forgiveness to works of penance, lend your merciful ear to our prayers and in your kindness pour out the grace of your + blessing on your servants who are marked with these ashes, that, as they follow the Lenten observances, they may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the Paschal Mystery of your Son. Through Christ our Lord Amen. Repent, and believe in the Gospel. Or Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

1. St. Rose of Lima - “Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may go to heaven." 2. Fr. Thomas Merton - "Ash Wednesday is full of joy... The sources of all sorrow are the illusion that of ourselves we are anything but dust." 3. Pope Francis - "During Lent, let us find concrete ways to overcome our indifference." 4. St. Augustine - "Do you wish your prayer to fly toward God? Make for it two wings: fasting and almsgiving." 5. St. Therese of Calcutta - “As Lent is the time for greater love listen to Jesus' thirst... 'Repent and believe' " 6. Martin Luther - “If I fail to spend two hours in prayer each morning, the devil gets the victory through the day. I have so much business I cannot get on without spending three hours daily in prayer”.
