During these 40 days,

we ponder what it means

to “give up, take up and

lift up.” Using the spir-

itual practices of prayer,

fasting and almsgiving,

we deepen our relation-

ship with Christ and dis-

cern where God is work-

ing in our lives.

We pray for others in

the global church. We

reflect on what type of

person God calls us to

be, and we ask for his

guidance in living up to

our potential.

We fast, or give things

up, as a reminder to re-

move things in our lives

that get in the way of our

relationship with God.

Our fasting also reminds

us of those who do not

have enough food, who

experience hunger with-

out a choice.

We give alms with a

spirit of generosity to our

brothers and sisters in

need, honoring Jesus’

call to serve our neigh-

bors. This Lent, through

our sacrifices, we can

empower and transform

the lives of our brothers

and sisters in need.

Lenten Reflection

ST. JOSEPH’S NAMALAKA MALAWI—OUR SISTER PARISH-WHY WE CHOSE ST. JOE’S OVER

FR. JOHNNIES PARISH? About 4 years ago a search committee was formed (partly of folks who traveled to Malawi lead by Linda our

pastoral associate.) They were deeply touched and fell in love with the country and its people. The dream for

a Sister Parish was born. It seemed natural to pursue a relationship with Fr. Johnnie Chimwaza’s parish as we

knew and loved him from his one year with us at St. Brendan. We waited 2 years for his new parish to become

ready. Fr. Jim and Brigette Blair (pastoral council and committee member extraordinaire) traveled to Malawi to

initiate the process but the trip was not fruitful. We had intended to send funds to Fr. Johnnie to add onto his

rectory so it could accommodate visitors but due to a lack of follow-through this did not happen. With much

prayer it was discerned that we needed to look elsewhere. We dreamed of being led to a relationship where

open communication would be key. A delegation traveled to Malawi last June, hosted by Bishop Montfort Sti-

ma, a good friend and visitor to St. Brendan. He introduced us to the area and 3 separate parishes. On meet-

ing the community of St. Joseph, Namalaka the spirit led us to invite them to become our Sister Parish and

they readily agreed. Marie Hedden 206-948-5166, mhedden40@hotmail, monthly meetings 3rd Thursdays,

DO YOU KNOW—Where is LOVE in the Bible?

(answers next week)

1. How does God show his love to the people in Joel 3: 1? (hint—Old Testament)

2. In the “love chapter” 1 Corinthians 13: 13, St. Paul writes that love is “patient and (what else?)

3. What is the new commandment that St. John is talking about in John 13: 34?

4, Why do we feel drawn toward loving God? (1 John 4: 19)

5. How did Jesus show love from the Cross? (Luke 23: 34)

OLD TESTAMENT FRIENDS—ADAM & EVE

Try to imagine the most beautiful garden in the world. It would have all kinds of fruit—apples, raspberries, peaches, even bananas. Then try to imagine that you lived in that Garden. Adam and Eve had that experience. They could walk with God and talk to Him directly. Some people tell you not to believe in Adam and Eve. That’s because they don’t understand the story the same way that we do. In all of the Bible stories, we can put ourselves into the places of the characters and ask, “Would I do the same things as those people?” If the answer is yes, or even “sometimes” you can be sure that God is using that story to send you a message.

LIBRARY CORNER

We have now started Lent! Everyone has their own

way of walking through Lent. One way is to find a

good book to guide you through your personal 40

days. St. Brendan Library has

several shelves filled with spiritual direction books,

books on the sacraments, books on the saints, plus

so much more. Come check us out!

KNIGHTS CORNER

Next Weekend is the monthly Knights of

4Columbus Pancake Breakfast. A great time

to get to know other parishioners, and enjoy a

great breakfast at the same time.

The Knights joined the Men’s Luncheon at

Brittany Park to hear an interesting presenta-

tion on fly fishing. It was a great time to sit and

chat with the residents, many of whom recog-

nized us from the Casino Nights which we

hosted at Brittany Park.

Bothell Knights attended a special awards

presentation at Joint Base Lewis McCord to

honor the brave men and women of the Night-

hawks Squadron because of our faithful sup-

port of the Heartbeat Serving Wounded

Warriors Christmas Stockings. Heartbeat is an

all volunteer organization with less than 10%

overhead. They have no association with the

national Wounded Warrior Project that has

42% overhead.

ST. BRENDAN GIVING TREE DONATES $940 TO THE MERCIFUL

LOVE CONNECTION The Merciful Love Connection works with the Refuge of Mercy in Chile, a refuge

for adolescent mothers. From Aug. 2015 to Aug. 2016, the MLC celebrates its

10th anniversary. St. Brendan has been a part of this endeavor since its be-

ginning and has donated over $17,000 to this mission. This year, we plan to

repaint and install new flooring in the nursery, purchase new curtains and bed-

ding for the girls’ rooms and new tables and chairs for the girl’s dining room.

We will continue to support ongoing programs of education and psychological

help for the girls. St. Brendan has truly made a difference in the lives of these

young girls. We use every penny of your support as if lives depend on it—

because they do! Thank you for your continued generosity.

First Sunday of Lent

Today’s first reading describes the offering of first fruits the people of Israel

were to present to the Lord in thanksgiving for their deliverance from Egypt

and the gift of the promised land. Is my offering at today’s Mass an

appropriate response to the many blessings the Lord has given me?

Annual Catholic Appeal

Our goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal is $145,541 of which we have

payments of $128,527 which leaves a balance of $17,014. If you have not

made a pledge please do so. If you have made a pledge you have until April

to complete your pledge. Any shortfall has to be made up by St. Brendan

Parish.

been added Reflections by Scott Hann and Lent, the background color has

also been changed. If you do not have myParish App you can get it for free
