City of Brantford Town Crier, David McKee used his incredible skills
and personality to guide the bee to a successful finish.
David has been involved with Brant Skills Centre’s Annual Bees since
2009 and has performed various roles including Mulligan Man, Judge #3,
and Master of Ceremonies.
It was a banner evening for the Brant Skills Centre at their 13th Annual Adult Spelling Bee, held on June 2, 2016 at Braemar House School. The event, which supports adult learning, liter-acy and essential skills training programs in Brantford and the County of Brant raised $10,586.00; topping last year’s record-breaker of $9100.
A total of 13 teams entered the competition. Each team raised pledges for the opportunity to compete for the coveted first place trophy. First-time competitors The Alpha Bettys won the 2016 event after 10 rounds. Finishing in second place behind The Alpha Bettys were Gen-Next, and finishing third were first-time competitors The Post-Secondary Posse from the Wilfred Laurier University/Conestoga College team.

The Literacy Cup, sponsored by Enterprise Brant, is presented
to the team that raises the most funds. For the second year in a
row the cup was presented to the Spellbound Express team
from Steer Davies Gleave.
With Steer Davies Gleave matching the team’s pledges (up to
$662.00), Spellbound Express raised a total of $1662.00
beating the amount Millards raised by $102.00. Thank you

Second-time competitors, Spellbound Express arrived at the bee armed with loads of pledges and ready to compete. They lasted until the fifth round when they were eliminated after mis-spelling “Lugubrious.”

Three-time team spirit award winners!
The awesome enthusiasm of the teams as well as the cheering and
support from the fans made choosing the winner of the Team Spirit
prize challenging. For the third year in a row The Punktuators and
their fans out cheered and took home the team spirit award.
St. Leonard’s Community Services has participated in eight out of our thirteen bees. The Punktuators were eliminated in the seventh round after misspelling “Elucidate.”

After coming in second place last year in the 12th Annual Adult Spelling Bee, the Spellers on Board were the second team out this year after misspelling “Inoculate” in the third round. We’ve heard they are looking for a comeback next year.

Newcomers to the bee, The Bee’s Knees showed awe-some team spirit. Buzzy Bee may have been a little jealous of their antennae. After misspelling “Kanji” in the fifth round, the Bee’s Knees were eliminated from the competition. We hope to see them back next year.

The Bean Counters are no strangers to the Annual Spelling Bees. They have participated in five previous bees and always come a little closer to the top three. After misspelling “Nebulosity” in the eighth round, The Bean Counters were eliminated from the competition.
With matching dollars from Millards for employee contributions, The Bean Counters raised a total of $1560.00 and were only $102.00 away from being awarded the Literacy Cup for excel-lence in fundraising. Thank you to Millards, The Bean Counters, and all those who supported them through pledges!

Participants in Brant Skills Centre’s Annual Adult Spelling Bees since 2009, Cliff Jones and David Simpson have spelled their way to first place in five out of eight bees. Deb Andre joined the team in 2014 to see first place in both 2014 and 2015.
Champions of the 11th and 12th Annual Bees, The Histerical Society was not successful in taking the championship for Brant Skills Centre’s 13th Annual Adult Spelling Bee. They were eliminated in the third round after misspelling “Trigonometry.”
