Mailings CurtailedBecause of the minimal response,

race entry blanks and other incidentalmailings will be eliminated. A typical300 piece race entry mailing nets a return of 25 pre-entries; many of thoseare the result of direct handouts suchas pick-ups at: previous races and thenetwork o f spor t ing goods s toreswhere the entry forms are available.

    While you were fussing over gettingyour running number on straight during a TRRC race this past winter, JoeSanchez and Francis Kehoe were busyhauling gallons of water for coffee andtea. And while you wolfed down abunch of cookies and warmed your in-sides after a hard racing effort, Joeand Francis made sure everything wasavailable and t idy. After you wenth o m e t h e S a n c h e z a n d K e h o e f a m i l i e scleaned up, packed up and went homet o c l e a n s o m e m o r e .

Actually, being in charge of procur-ring and serving refreshments is notsuch a tough job and Joe and Franciswi l l b lush at the heroic depict ion presented above. But, the Sanchez's andKehoe's have been pulling K.P. sincethe inception of the TRRC race schedule last winter (1978). The deserve ab r e a k .

    There are many of you who want toc o n t r i b u t e t o t h e c l u b ' s r a c e a c t i v i t i e sbut are reluctant to involve yourselfw i t h t h e m e c h a n i c s o f a r a c e i t s e l f .Join the refreshments committee; al l i ttakes is an hour to shop, which can beincorporated in the family groceryshopping, an extra before the race anda n h o u r a f t e r . R i i n n i n g R t i o t o r i eAn unusual and dangerous thing

happens when some runne rs t ake t othe road; they forget they must shareI t w i th ca rs , t rucks and buses . As adriver I pass many runners who appearto be in their own world, apparentlyoblivious to what is happening aroundthem. As a runner, I can appreciatethis preoccupation, but as a driver itcan be infuriating. With so many of usrunning on the roads these days weough t t o cons ide r some ways t osafeguard our activity.

I f there is a "number one" ru le o fthe road, it is this: run facing traffic. As with lightning and bullets, it is theone you don't see or hear that killsyou. I am aware of three fatalities, in-volying vehicles and runners, withinthe metropolitan area during the pastfew years. The incidents had one common element - in all cases, the runnerwas running with traffic.

When running against traffic youhave visual contact with an approaching vehicle: if a car is at>out to hit youit is best you are aware of the situation. Besides the visual contact yourhearing is also improved when facingt ra ffic . We runners a re bu i l t w i th ourears directed forward; we are designedto hear what is in f ront o f us. Whenrunning towards danger, it is easier tohear than running away from danger.

As a runner you must view everyvehic le on the road as a threat , unt i lyou see evidence to the contrary.

When I see a car approaching I im-mediatley move towards the left; evenif it is only a little the movement signals that I am mentally prepared forwhat may happen next. It is a goodidea to take stock of what the shouldercond i t i ons a re l i ke ; i s t he re room todive off the road if necessary? Depending upon how far the car was from youwhen you spotted him, you should lookfor some sign of recognition on thepart of the driver (remember you aremore difficult to see). Most drivers willwithin a few seconds swing out a little;if you see this you can relax somewhatbut unless the footing on the shoulderis poor stay there. The driver is entitledto a measure of considerat ion too, sostay where you are; he may have toswerve back for some unforeseen reas o n .

If possible, gauge the speed of thevehic le re lat ive to the road condi t ionsand the condition of his vehicle. If theroad is bumpy and his car has poorsuspension, the driver is not going tobe in complete control of his car.

What about the driver who gives youno room? First get yourself off theroad completely. Next, assess hisspeed: if he is slowing down it may bethat there is oncoming traffic and hecannot give you much room. Regardless, as the vehicle comes closer you

    shou ld s low down; I have come to aw a l k s o m e t i m e w h e n t h e r e w a s l i t t l eroom. Keep moving though; you arebetter able to react quickly if you aremoving.

    If you are in an area where sharpcurves and crests of hills make visibility l imi ted, you must take a mored e f e n s i v e a t t i t u d e . A s s u m e t h e c a rthat may pop around the corner Is going to use the whole road; the drivero f t e n h a s n o c h o i c e i n t h e m a t t e r .Here is where your hearing can assistyou. Keep an ear cocked. I usually turnmy head to the right so that my leftear is pointed forward; that al lows met o s e e t h e r o a d . I h a v e f o u n d t h a t m o s tv e h i c l e s w i l l a n n o u n c e t h e m s e l v e seven when they are unseen; if youremain alert you will detect them.

Trucks and other large vehiclesrequire an extra measure of precaution; they are usually slower movingbut the i r s i ze makes cond i t ions morecrowded. Construction vehicles are aptto have levers or other devices protruding from them; regardless of how slowly they are moving give them wideberth. Garbage trucks and other service vehicles have men jumping ona n d o f f t h e m ; w a t c h f o r b o t h b o d i e sand doors which may open.

    Although we may legally pass astopped school bus watch for children;this is especially important if you arepassing from behind, on the driver'ss i d e .R o a d c r e w s a n d o t h e r w o r k e r s d e s e r v econsideration. When I approach a sit

uation where equipment and men areengaged I first slow down and checktraffic conditions in the area. If possible I swing around the immediate site.See if any equipment is in motion;even if not. make eye contact withsomeone so they know you are in thearea. If there is a flagman, make contact with him. Let him know some howthat you are aware of action in thearea and see if he wants to direct youin some manner. If you have anydoubts stop and walk cautiously.

A t i n t e r s e c t i o n s c o m m o n s e n s eprevails naturally. At stop signs, unless you are sure the driver sees you,go tehind the vehicle. Besides thesafety factor. It is courteous not todelay a driver when he is at a stopsign; he may miss an opportunity toswing into traffic and be stuck therewhile you ambled across his path.

    M u c h o f t h i s m a y s e e m o v e r - c a utious and a bother to think about whiterunning; if you spend all your timeworrying at>out what may be comingaround the next bend how can runningbe fun. I assure you that most of thiss tu f f becomes second na tu re a f te r ashort while. Most of the people I runw i t h n e v e r c o n c e r n t h e m s e l v e s w i t hr o a d c o n d i t i o n s e x c e p t w h e n i tbecomes necessaiy. If you are anaware person all this becomes natural.

    I f w e r e m e m b e r t h a t d r i v e r s a n do the rs we mee t on the road dese rveour consideration, everyone will coexist happily.

High Winds, Spirits Dominate Albany 30KJorgensen Captures 3rd Place Women's

We knew John Holland was stilt alivebecause we could see that feet werestill propped up on the bar stool, in therear of the bar. John was laying on abench in the back booth; all we couldsee were his feet, sticking out. Weakened by a chest cold, which was compounded by a stomach virus, John wasthe only casualty of the day.

While John lay in the far booth, abottle of Pepto Bismol close by, therest of us were up front celebratingour ind iv idual and co l lec t ive v ic tor ies .Despite buffeting winds and oftenheavy traffic, most of the runners whomade the tr ip north to Albany onMarch 18, were pleased with their perf o r m a n c e s .

The day's high point was Lori Jorg-enser.'s 3rd place victory in thewomen's open division; quite an accomplishment - remember this wasthe Nat ional AAU 30 Ki lometer Championship.
