7 Фактів Про Святого Миколая, Які Вас Здивують Пропонуємо дізнатися 7 фактів про цього святого, які вас

переконають: від нього можна очікувати не лише чергову

порцію мандаринок та солодощів. 1. Святий Миколай народився в Туреччині - близько 270 р. у Патарі у заможній родині. Його батьки були ревними християнами й у вірі виховали свого сина. Після смерті вони залишили великий маєток, який Миколай не вагався роздати убогим. Святого виховував дядько, абат місцевого монастиря. Він також висвятив його на священика. 2. Був монахом у Святій Землі - У 305 р. кілька монахів з Анатолії прибули до Святої Землі і у містечку Бейт–Джала заснували невеликий монастир. Кілька монахів жили у печерах з видом на Вифлеєм. Святий Миколай прибув до Святої Землі як паломник 312 року. Він відвідав місця, пов’язані з життям Спасителя, та протягом трьох років мешкав у монастирі Бейт–Джали. 317 року Миколай повернувся до батьківщини. 3. Святий Миколай випадково став єпископом - Життя святого зповите легендами. За однією з них, єписком він став випадково. Річ у тім, що місцевий єпископ помер, а священики не могли визначитися з його наступником. Дискусії і перемовини нічого не давали, отож вони вирішили, що єпископом стане той священик, хто першим увійде до храму. Ним і був святий Миколай. 4. Він справді таємно робив подарунки - Інша легенда розповідає: якось молодий Миколай дізнався, що його сусід втратив усі свої статки та не мав змоги забезпечити посагом своїх доньок. Аби допомогти дівчатам уникнути зневаги, уночі він підкинув їхньому батькові до черевиків золото. Інша легенда розповідає, що Миколай підкидав гроші через димар, а монети чудесним чином потрапляли до шкарпеток, що сушилися біля вогню. 5. Покровитель моряків - Знову прекрасна легенда: у місті, де Миколай був єпископом, панував голод. Однак неподалік, біля його берегів, стояв корабель із зерном. Моряки не хотіли ділитися ним із мешканцями міста, але святий Миколай переконав їх і пообіцяв, що зерна у трюмах менше не стане. Все сталося так, як обіцяв Миколай; моряки вшановують його як свого покровителя. 6. Святий Миколай з Мір Лікійських чи з Барі - Йдеться про того ж святого. На сході його вшановують як св. Миколая Мірлікійського, на заході — як св. Миколая з Барі. Адже коли Анатолія була завойована, група католиків таємно перенесла реліквії святого Миколая до Барі на італійському узбережжі. Звідти його культ поширився. Святий Миколай вважається особливим покровителем Росії, Греції і Туреччини. 7. Ляпас Арію - Це ще одна дуже відома легенда про святого, яка показує Миколая як ревного захисника істинної віри. Традиція розповідає, що святий відвідав Нікейський Собор, скликаний 325 року імператором Костянтином. Миколай слухав там Арія, який зневажливо висловився щодо божественної природи Ісуса. Усі єпископи тримали себе у руках, а Миколай… дав йому ляпаса. Святий постав перед судом імператора, який підтримував Арія. Костянтин наказав єпископам визначити покарання для Миколая. Вони позбавили святого єпископського одягу і ув’язнили. Тієї самої ночі Миколай побачив Ісуса і Пресвяту Діву Марію. Спаситель вручив йому книгу Євангелія, а Його Мати знову зодягнула святого у єпископські шати. Імператор звільнив святого, а Собор визнав вчення Арія єрессю. Дослідники говорять про те, що Миколая імовірно все ж не було на тому Соборі.

St. Nicholas — The man behind Santa Claus

St. Nicholas was a 4th century bishop who lived in Myra, Asia

Minor-modern day Turkey. He came from a wealthy family and

used his wealth to help the needy, usually in secret. There was

a poor man who had 3 daughters, and lacked money for a dowry;

his daughters could not get married. On 3 separate nights,

Nicholas secretly dropped a bag of gold down the chimney into

the house. The bag fell into a stocking that had been hung by the

fire to dry. Finally determined to see who gave them the money,

the father hid by the fire and caught Nicholas dropping the bag of

gold. Nicholas begged the man not to tell anyone what he had

done, because he did not want to bring attention to himself.

Nonetheless, news spread, and when anyone received a secret

gift, it was attributed to St. Nicholas.

Because of his kindness, Nicholas was made a saint. Many

countries celebrate St. Nicholas Day-Dec 6. In Ukraine, gifts are

given on St. Nicholas Day. He is not only the patron saint

of children, but also of sailors. Through his intercession, St.

Nicholas saved some sailors that were caught in a storm. The

sailors prayed, St. Nicholas appeared, and calmed the seas. There

is even a legend that in ancient Kyiv, a boy was drowning in the

Dnipro River and was presumed dead. His parents prayed to St.

Nicholas and later found their son asleep under an icon of St.

Nicholas under a tree.

In the 16th century, Northern Europe experienced the upheaval

of the Protestant Reformation that would later spread to England

and Scandinavia. The Catholic Mass would be eliminated, the

Sacraments reduced and seen as symbols of faith and devotion

to the Saints would be discouraged. But someone had to deliver

presents to the children at Christmas, so in England, the ‘popish’

St. Nicholas became ‘Father Christmas’, or ‘Old Man Christmas’,

an old character from English and Northern European stories

plays from the Middle Ages.

In France, he was known as ‘Pere Noel’. In parts of Austria

and Germany, St. Nicholas was called ‘Pelz Nichol-Nicholas in

furs’ and the gift-giver would be a golden-haired child with wing,

called ‘Christkind’, who symbolizes the new-born baby Jesus. In

early America, St. Nicholas was called ‘Kris Kringle’, from the

Christkind’. In Holland, he would be called ‘Sinter Klaas’, and

when they settled in America, Kris Kringle, Sinter Klaas would

be renamed ‘Santa Claus’. Instead of a saintly humble generous,

bishop wearing red episcopal vestments, Santa wears a red and

white costume and has a large girth. This image of Santa that we

are all familiar with was designed and drawn by the 19th century

cartoonist Thomas Nast, based on the poem ‘A visit from St.

Nicholas.’

The late Fr. Thomas Hopko wrote that St. Nicholas was not

known for anything particular or extraordinary in and of itself.

He was simply a man of prayer and generosity who taught the

truth, opposed error, and guided his flock the best he could. But

in his ordinariness, he became extraordinary in simple goodness.

He became a living witness to the healing and fulfillment of the

human being that Jesus Christ has made possible for each and

every one of us. His calling was that of a monk, of a bishop, but

the signs of his virtuous character are applicable to everyone.

Perhaps, that’s why, even in our increasing post-Christian world,

he is remembered and loved to this day.

‘O holy Father Nicholas, Christ has shown you to be the model of

faith. Your humility inspired all in your flock. From Myra, your

piety shines throughout the world. You are known as a protector

of widows and orphans. Now we ask your unceasing prayer for

the salvation of our souls.’

Ukraine Designated Newest State Council

THE EXPANSION of the Order to Ukraine began

13 years ago with a simple plea. Speaking at the

123rd Supreme Convention in Chicago, Cardinal

Lubomyr Husar, then major archbishop of Kyiv-Halyc,

expressed his fervent desire that the Knights of

Columbus be established in his country.

Some 100 Ukrainian men were welcomed into the

Order in 2011, and within two years, with the help

of Knights from Poland, the Order formally expanded

to Ukraine with councils in Kyiv and Lviv.

Ukraine officially became a K of C territory in 2016,

and today the country counts more than 1,000 Knights

in 25 councils.

In his annual report Aug. 7, Supreme Knight

Anderson announced that the Board of Directors

has designated Ukraine as a state council.

States Dinner Keynote Address on August 7, 2018 I, TOGETHER WITH Archbishop Mokrzycki, the Roman Catholic Archbishop

of Lviv in Ukraine, and four other priests, were among the first to be enrolled in the

Order in Ukraine. And today, seven years later, we are witnesses to a historical

event — Ukraine being granted the status of state jurisdiction, joining the worldwide

community of the Knights of Columbus.

On behalf of the Ukrainian Knights, I am deeply grateful to the Supreme

Council, and, in particular, to our Supreme Knight, Mr. Carl Anderson, for this

recognition and for his willingness to take such a risk with our country. …

The idea of knighthood is very relevant and alive among the Ukrainian people.

A knight is someone who represents higher values and is eager to sacrifice even

his own life for these ideals. So when our men first heard about the four principles of

the Order — charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism — they found them very close

to their hearts. That is why this invitation to knighthood was, and continues to be, so

attractive to more than 1,000 Knights of Columbus in Ukraine.

I find that it was truly providential that the first council was established in Ukraine’s capital city — Kyiv, five years ago,

just before the beginning of the Maidan, or “Revolution of Dignity” as we call it in Ukraine, and our brother Knights

demonstrated courage and charity by joining hundreds of thousands of other men and women who wanted to defend their

right to live in a just society where human dignity would be respected.

But soon after, war knocked at our doors, initiated by our eastern neighbor — and in the last four years, Ukraine has lost

eight percent of its territory due to this war. More than 1.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes in eastern

Ukraine, leaving behind all their property. This war has already claimed more than 10,000 lives and left more than 24,000

people injured, with unimaginable destruction. ...

The Knights of Columbus in Ukraine have responded generously and wholeheartedly to the most basic need of

Ukrainian society — service to one’s neighbor, diakonia. The Order has been very instrumental in mobilizing Ukrainian men

to help people in need.

We are immensely grateful to the Knights of Columbus for your prayerful and financial support, through which we were

able to realize so many charitable activities. Paradoxically, because of the war, many internally displaced persons from east-

ern Ukraine, who used to have a hostile attitude toward the Catholic Church as a result of Soviet propaganda, have encoun-

tered the loving face of the Catholic Church, which cares for its people regardless of their ethnic background or religious

beliefs.
