GLIMPSE OF FAITHABSOLUTION

What are the

exceptional cases

when general

absolution may

be given?

General Absolution

may be given:

1st

in imminent danger

of death, and there

is no time for the

priest or priests to

hear the confessions

of individual

penitents;

2nd

when there is grave

need, namely when,

in view of the number

of penitents, there

are not enough

confessors

available to hear

individual

confessions properly

within a suitable

period of time,

so that the

penitents would,

through no fault

of their own,

be deprived of

sacramental grace or

Holy Communion

for a long time.

But no sufficient

necessity exists when

confessors are not

available merely

because of a great

gathering of

penitents,

as on the occasion

of some major

feast day of

pilgrimage.

Who will decide

when general

absolution may

be permitted?

The diocesan bishop,

after having

considered the

criteria agreed upon

by other members of

the conference of

bishops,

will decide

when general

absolution

may be permitted.

What conditions

are required on

the part of the

penitent for the

valid reception of

general

absolution?

The conditions are:

1st

the person concerned

must be aptly

disposed to

repentance;

this means that he

sincerely repents for

grave

transgressions,

with the intention of

making reparation of

any scandal or

damaged caused;

2nd

he must resolve to

confess in due time

those grave sins

which at the moment

he was not able to

confess.
