40 Cans for Lent Food Drive Benefiting St. Elizabeth's Pantry and the Denver Rescue Mission

The Pax Christi Knights of Columbus Council 10937 is coordinating this year’s 40 Cans for Lent program, which is an outstanding and simple way for all parishioners to help feed the hungry. This year, all food and monetary donations will benefit St. Elizabeth’s Pantry and the Denver Rescue Mission.

St. Elizabeth’s Pantry ~ Located in the Christi Center, St. Elizabeth’s Pantry is open every Wednesday and Friday between 10:00 a.m. and Noon. The pantry serves approximately 60 families per month.

The Denver Rescue Mission ~ Since 1892, the Denver Rescue has been meeting the needs of those experiencing poverty and homelessness through emergency services, community outreach (food), long-term rehabilitation programs, transitional programs, and assistance for permanent housing.

What You Can Do To Help ~ To participate and help feed your fellow brothers and sisters, we are asking that you collect various canned or boxed food items during the Lenten season and drop the cans by the collection bins on the following days:

!Friday, March 22nd after Stations of the Cross which begin at 6:30 pm !Friday, April 5th after Stations of the Cross which begin at 6:30 pm !Saturday, April 13th, between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m.

“I was hungry and you fed me. I was naked and you clothed me. Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” ~ Matthew, 25:35, 40

PARISH MISSION with

Fr. Jacques Philippe March 25th – 27th

at 7:00 p.m.

Topic: Eucharistic Adoration Fr. Jacques will speak at all Masses on Sunday, March 24th to kick-off the mission. We will start Monday evening with Mass at 7:00 p.m. for the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. The church has given us a great gift in the beauty of receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. We are also drawn to adore Him outside of the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass through the gift of Eucharistic Adoration. Fr. Jacques will help us to understand more deeply the fruits we receive when we allow ourselves to be in communion with Christ. With over one million copies sold in 24 languages, Fr. Jacques Philippe’s writings on themes such as prayer, interior freedom, and peace of heart have become classics of modern Catholic spirituality.

Please join us with your Pax Christi community in participating with and learning from Fr. Jacques at our Annual Parish Lenten Mission.

Spiritual Adoption The Nine Months of the Child Jesus in the Womb of Mary

Each year on December 25th, we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. For centuries, the Church has also celebrated His Conception on March 25th - The Incarnation - the moment Jesus sanctified life in the womb. In medieval times, the Feast of The Annunciation was celebrated by the Church with processions and great feasting. Our parish Respect Life Ministry invites you to Mass at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, March 25th to begin a nine month commemoration of the gestation of the Child Jesus in the womb of Mary. It also begins our parish's Spiritual Adoption Program. In this special effort, one prays everyday for a child who is in danger of abortion ~ that God would spare the life of that child you have named and touch the hearts of his/her parents. Our certainty is based on faith in God's power and unlimited mercy. He is the giver of life and His will is that every child would be surrounded by parental love. Watch for monthly bulletin announcements hereafter that will track the 9 months of life in the womb. For more information go to http://www.spiritualadoption.org/SpiritualAdoption.html.

"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion." (The Spiritual Adoption Prayer -Archbishop Fulton Sheen)

Pointmen What are your Lenten resolutions? Do they include: Improving your Prayer life? Building fraternity with other faithful Catholic men? Finding more Joy in your Faith?

If so, we invite you to join the Pax Christi Pointmen every Friday from 6:00 - 7:20 am. We will feed your body and soul, with a great breakfast, followed by a thoughtful and enriching video and discussion from Formed.

Next Friday, we continue a six part series entitled, “Prayer - Finding Intimacy with God.” Come join us and learn how to experience a richer prayer life this Lent.

2nd Sunday of Lent - 4 - March 17, 2019

Liturgy – Are you in it? It is the third week that we look at the preparation of the gifts. In the beginning, this very simple and meaningful part of the liturgy was very short and always ended with the prayer oratio super oblate. In time, it started to grow. It was under the influence of the Gallican Rite which didn’t accept silence in the celebrations. Therefore, when processions with gifts slowly disappeared, incense and washing of hands with special prayers took place. Those prayers were said by the celebrant and gave an interpretation to the signs.

The first known prayer we have comes from the 8th century and it is in the Sacramentary from Amenis. (Bolded text is used in our time).

Deus qui humanae … - Give us o God … By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. This prayer was said while the priest was mixing wine and water. It likely comes from the 4th century and was used at that time only during the celebration on the Nativity of the Lord.

In spiritu humilitatis … - With humble and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, o Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God. This is related to the prayer of Azariah (Dn 3:39). It expressed a deep and humble prayer asking God to accept our gifts. During this prayer, the celebrant made a deep bow.

Lava me, Domine … - Wash me, o Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. This is a prayer said during washing of hands by the priest. This tradition was known before Christ and was accepted in the Church. This sign also has a practical meaning. The gifts brought to the altar were often dirty. Washing their hands allowed the priest to keep his hands clean. But, there is a more important meaning. It's a sign of the desire of being internally clean from sin. Therefore, it is still present in the liturgy and didn’t disappear as bringing of gifts did.

Orate, fratres … - Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. This acclamation came to the liturgy in the 8th century and was addressed only to the clergy. Later on, it included the people as well. When the people delivered their gifts, the priest asked other clergy to pray for him.

Music Ministry ~ Music During Lent Purple tells our eyes it's Lent; texts tell our mind it's Lent; prayers tell our hearts it's Lent. And so, our music should tell our ears that it’s Lent. An old custom has the organ silent during Lent. Current rubrics require that the organ be used for accompaniment purposes only, except for Laetare Sunday and Solemnities and Feasts. We have extended our musical fast by having an entrance chant and no opening hymn. The sung items of the Ordinary are being sung in Latin following the suggestion from Pope St. John Paul II that a congregation should be able to sing at least one setting of the Mass in Latin. The Gregorian chant setting we are singing is the very one he recommends. The choir will be singing some other Lenten Gregorian chants as Communion meditations like the “Attende Domine” done on Ash Wednesday. The translation can be found in the pew missal. The following are some excellent Lenten hymns from our pew missal that might be useful for daily meditation:

• Again, We Keep This Solemn Fast • Attende, Domine • Domine Deus • Forty Days and Forty Nights • Grant to Us, O Lord • Lord Jesus, Think on Me • Lord, Who throughout These Forty Days • My Song is Love Unknown • O Cross of Christ, Immortal Tree • O Kind Creator, Bow Thine Ear • Parce Domine • The Glory of These Forty Days • When I Survey The Wondrous Cross

Ministry Reflection In our family, once we have celebrated our First Communion, we can become an altar server if we choose. We both chose to serve at Mass because we knew it would help us come closer to God. We have learned a lot about the different objects used during the Mass. Before we were altar servers we didn’t even know they were there or what they were used for. Now we know about the lavabo bowl, the cruets, the ciborium, the paten, the chalice and the tabernacle key. We’ve also learned where and how to bow to show reverence to God. We’ve also learned that even if you make a mistake it is okay and next time you’ll be even better at it. We even have a special altar server prayer that we say together before each Mass. Serving around the altar and being involved in the Mass brings you a deeper appreciation for why we are there. You really feel like you’re a part of something special and precious. If you’re thinking of becoming an altar server you really should join us. All you need are black shoes, socks, and pants and a white shirt to be an altar server. You also need a heart willing to keep trying and wanting to serve. The MCs are there to tell you your jobs and how to do them and are there to help you out during the Mass. They are all very kind and good guides. We would love to serve with you! ~ Everleigh Lovitt (10) and Greyson Lovitt (8)

In addressing the role of altar servers, Pope John Paul II tells us, “The altar server occupies a privileged place in the liturgical celebration. He who serves at Mass, presents himself to a community. He experiences firsthand that Jesus Christ is present and active in every liturgical act. Jesus is present when the community comes together to pray and render praise to God. Jesus is present in the Word of sacred Scripture. Jesus is present above all in the Eucharist under the signs of bread and wine. He acts through the priest who, in the person of Christ, celebrates the holy Mass and administers the sacraments. Therefore, in the liturgy, you are much more than simple "helpers of the parish priest." Above all, you are servers of Jesus Christ, of the eternal High Priest. Thus, you, altar servers, are called in particular to be young friends of Jesus. Be determined to go deeper and to cultivate this friendship with him. You will discover that in Jesus you have found a true friend for life.” ~ Altar Servers — More Than "Helpers of the Parish Priest" Pope John Paul II. (Address at the General Audience, August 1, 2001, the 1,000th of his pontificate)
